Top Ten New Reviews of 2016

Can you believe 2016 is over? or better yet, are you glad it's over? As you get older, the years go by faster and faster, and this one was a blur. It was also a challenging year logistically as all the companies dumped their products at once and that was after I had vowed to myself not to spend a fortune buying the latest and greatest just for the sake of a few extra page views. Ice cream hunting is fun, but spending an extra 40% to review it first has lost a bit lot of luster for me... look, I'm sidetracking already, let's get to the countdown!

Edy's Slow Churned Vermont Maple Syrup Ice Cream

[New for 2016] Ok, time for our last review of 2016. I know I haven't covered all of the new 2016 freezer aisle products, but checking the records shows I came pretty close considering what was available to me (and what I'm actually willing to consume). We're going to end with Edy's of all things which seems a little funny because a few of you pointed out that I tend to be hard on Edy's. I can see why you might think that, but keep in mind that I consider all of the good products they put out over the last twenty years and then compare it to what they deliver today.

Yuengling's Cherry Vanilla Chunk Ice Cream

[New for 2016] Time for the third of four new 2016 flavors from Yuenglings Ice Cream. Cinnamon Churro wasn't my style, Cookies & Cream was pleasant enough, and I still haven't seen the new Butter Pecan flavor. That just leaves...

Blue Bunny Cocoa Bunny Ice Cream

[New for late 2016] It's a Christmas miracle, my Walmart finally got in the new Blue Bunny flavors! I've been searching high and low for this flavor and peppermint party which will get reviewed in the next few days. Cherrific Cheesecake has also returned >> Ha, it just dawned on me that one says "limited edition", one says "seasonal", and one says "holiday edition".

New Snacks and the Nosh Show Episode 95

Hello Nosh Show listeners! Time for our final show of 2016. I know that sounds sad but Episode 95 has lots of ice cream in it so that's a good thing right?

Discussion Time: Is mainstream ice cream dead?

Maybe a better question is, do you still feel the same way about Breyers, Edys, Friendlys, Turkey Hill, Perrys, Blue Bunny and all the rest? I've been struggling to find a good way to ask this question as the year comes to a close. I just can't help but feel that those of us who search the freezer aisle for a good mainstream ice cream are running out of options.

I don't always want something super dense and calorie filled like B&J and H-D, nor do I want to settle for something cheap and unrewarding like a store brand. I don't want to spend ten to twenty dollars on a pint of ice cream that I have to have shipped to me no matter how amazing it might be. I just want to walk down the aisle and pick something that fits my mood at that exact moment. It shouldn't be that hard to find a mainstream cookie dough with enough flavor and dough bits. It shouldn't be that hard to find a cookies & cream flavor that isn't gummy or weak. Why can't I find a strong fruit flavor with real bits that doesn't blow up my food budget or leave an artificial taste?

Yes, I'm being bitter and cranky but I worry about what the future holds. I've said it several times now that Turkey Hill all natural ice cream is my only real refuge in the mainstream space. Even the regular Turkey Hill flavors just aren't as good as they use to be, but they haven't fallen nearly as far as say Friendlys or Breyers. (just to clarify, Turkey Hill's regular line up is my current go to mainstream brand that I bring home for family consumption, I only buy the other brands if the TH selection is too limited).

I guess I just don't understand why we're losing the war here. There are so many options in the freezer aisle yet I struggle to bring home regular flavors to my family. This just seems so wrong. Has cost cutting killed mainstream ice cream? Is it possible to still deliver a good product at the price consumers expect? To be clear, I'm not saying you can't like these products. Instead, I'm just asking you if the changes we have been seeing bother you as much as it bothers me. I know, I'm probably overthinking this and hopefully this doesn't come off like a jerk post. I'm just worried about the industry. If I started an ice cream company, I'd want to serve the regular family that buys regular ice cream. The fancy stuff is fun, but why can't that big carton of mainstream frozen stuff bring the same amount of joy as it did when I was a kid?

Please let me know what you think. Have a good weekend everyone.

Mr. Green Tea Ginger Ice Cream

As I (sadly?) pace back and forth down the freezer aisle trying to discover something that catches my interest, I realize that I have been playing it safe recently. While this blog has always been about encouraging you to try new things, I couldn't help but find myself reaching for the safest of the Mr. Green Tea flavors... Madagascar bourbon vanilla ice cream which apparently isn't even on their website. The MGT site does list chai latte, ginger, black sesame, green tea, red bean and fortune cookie. I really wanted fortune cookie but it was the only flavor Stop & Shop (Giant) didn't have.

DQ Strawberry Funnel Cake A La Mode

[New for Summer 2016] Over the summer, DQ used up the last of it's apple tarts and began serving up something a bit more fun sounding. Having had my fair share of funnel cakes as a kid, I assumed this would at least be decent. I even get my choice of toppings: hot fudge, caramel, or...

Turkey Hill Vanilla Chocolate Crunch Ice Cream

Ok, today's review is definitely not new, it's just one of those flavors you may not recognize at first glance... mainly because it used to be known as BLITZburg Crunch which debuted in 2010 and was decked out with the Pittsburg Steelers logo. That's not all, (Phillies) Graham Slam, (Pinstripe) Brownie Blast, (Eagles) Touchdown Sundae have also lost their sports team brandings. Oh, if you had a thing for Bronx Bombers Sundae, that flavor appears to be gone completely. History lesson aside, let's dig in since these flavors tended to only be regional in the past.

Wegmans Shortbread Cookie Ice Cream

I don't remember if I saw this one last year or not, but I worked out my shopping so that I could bring some frozen stuff home from Wegmans and I couldn't resist the urge to make this one of my choices. I'm a sucker for a flavor that has "cookie" in the name so let's test....

Double Chocolate M&M's
and the Nosh Show Episode 93

Hello Nosh Show Listeners! Episode 93 is ready for listening. There's not a ton of product followup as we enter the holiday season, but I do have a few things to cover here. Oh, my Nosh (and Not) of the week is the two Kemps froyos I posted this week (#1 and #2). I think those of you who love salty caramel flavors should enjoy one of them at least.

Kemp's Raspberry Cheesecake Yo2 Frozen Yogurt

[Debuted 2016, switched to paper pints late 2018] So the other day I posted my first run in with the new Yo2 (Yo2) lineup from Kemps. After my first scooping of that flavor, I had the kind of mixed feelings that can really only be settled by trying the same product but in a different flavor.

Blue Bunny S'more Please Ice Cream

[By Nick, New for Summer 2016] Oh Blue Bunny, I haven't been able to sing praise of your most recent packaging redesign. Clear containers have been relegated to the pint world for far too long. I've been waiting for a brand like yours to finally jump on the bandwagon. I mean just look at this packaging. It's easily an eye catcher when you're in the sea of the ice cream isle. It's so clean and ahhh, I love it. Yes, I'm a marketing geek but you have to admit this was a smart move by Blue Bunny. Oh wait, you're here to read about the actual ice cream, aren't you? Fine, you win.

Kemp's Salted Caramel Cookie Crunch Yo2

[Debut 2016, switched to paper pints late 2018]
So Kemps has decided to launch a new frozen yogurt line at the end of 2016. This is not the most common thing to do, especially if you consider that Kemps already has two other froyo lines. Maybe they are trying to get a jump on 2017 or maybe they... I have no idea why really. Whatever it is, they've got this new "flavor squared" lineup called Yo2 and it's coming to a Wegmans or other grocery store near you. It's got a fancy clear design to show off its plentiful swirl. There are six flavors in all, I picked up two of them, and we're going to start with...

Enlightened Ice Cream

Originally my plan was to go one by one through the six free sample pints that Enlightened kindly sent over for review. See, while my area does have Enlightened bars available, I have yet to see the pints that they released at some point. The pint containers were originally clear but in the last few weeks Enlightened has let the world know that they have new colorful pint designs to get your attention. Basically they look more like Halo Top and less like Talenti now.

Why do I keep talking myself out of buying ice cream?

Hey everyone! First off I want to wish you all a pleasant long weekend. I am looking forward to a few days of sleeping in and watching the parade (san commercials) and digging in to lots of tasty food (in moderation ofcourse). Now speaking of food, I have to ask, why do I keep talking myself out of buying ice cream? How can this be?

Other companies have sports teams flavors, why shouldn't Gifford's?

Turkey Hill Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

[New for 2015] You've heard me confess my love for Turkey Hill all natural ice cream on multiple occasions right? It's my go-to 9pm snack nowadays. I just want something clean and simple to end my day. My only real problem with it is that there aren't a ton of flavors for me to choose from based on both availability and me not bringing home any of the 5 nut based flavors.

Trader Joe's Jingle Jangle Ice Cream

[New for Late 2016] I can't remember the last time I got a heads up on the internet and then found that new item the same day. Despite almost getting killed three times on the way to Trader Joe's, I made it there and found their newest ice cream. They've taken their delightful sounding holiday Jingle Jangle and thrown it into ice cream.

Ben & Jerry's Confetti Cake Ice Cream

Not Dead, Just Tired

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of posts this week but there will be more up shortly ... in theory anyway. I'd love to find Ben & Jerry's Confetti Cake soon which seems to take the bits from their Cotton Candy flavor, so it should be fun right?

Like several other bloggers you might know, I should be receiving a shipment of Enlightened ice cream pints next week. They've recently rebranded and are excited to show off their new wares.

I don't know if any of you follow my news site that is listed on the right side of the blog, but there are a few product announcements posted this week for Graeters Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip ice cream, Kemps Yo2 Frozen Yogurt, and M&M's brand ice cream bars.

Hopefully many of you have a nice long weekend planned so please try to enjoy. I'm now off to dig into a pint of Graeter's Black Raspberry Chip ice cream while I watch Central Intelligence.

Good night!

Yuengling's Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

[New for 2016] I don't remember the last time I said it, but I think that you can get a good sense for a company by trying their take on the classic flavor combo of cookies & cream. It's a flavor that is simple in construction, easy to do well, and yet still easy to mess up. Thankfully my local Stop & Shop (Giant) has increased their shelf space for Yuengling pints so I can try....

Hey everybody, sorry for no weekend post, got a little distracted by everything including a dying dryer. IttiBitz Cotton Candy Ice Cream

Have you ever had Dippin Dots? Well, Kemps has a clone called "IttiBitz" and there are currently 8 flavors available. I first reviewed IttiBitz a mighty seven years ago. They didn't leave a very good impression but things have been so very slow and the bitz were only a dollar a cup so I decided to try them again. The funny thing is that very day I bought these, someone left a comment on that old review about how bad this flavor is.

[New for Fall 2016] Hello Nosh Show listeners! Episode 89 is live and when you get to the end, I mention a product that hadn't won me over just yet. Haagen-Dazs White Russian Ice Cream

[By Jeffrey, New for Canada late 2016] Your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Jeff with another review from north of the border. Last week, I was lucky enough to be the first person to spot the new Haagen Dazs White Russian Ice Cream which contains 1% abv (note: it isn't noted on packaging at all, just according to the Nestle sales rep I talked to). This is their first mainstream alcohol-infused ice cream and apparently the first flavor in a line of these slightly drunken desserts.

Maple Valley Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream

So my nephew is a big fan of having ice cream with his cake and since his mom is a fan of both local and all natural stuff, sometimes we wind up having something from Maple Valley Creamery with our cake. I've always enjoyed it and I think it's time we do an official review of this local company based in Hadley, Massachusetts. What should I pick? Well, I've got yet another nasty headache today and headache time calls for chocolate time. Let's dig in to....

Humboldt Mint Chip Ice Cream

[New for 2016] Hopefully it's a passing trend, but it seems harder and harder to find a decent version of classic flavors as I walk down the freezer aisle. Many mainstream brands have lowered their quality while the fancy brands are either super high in calories or they just don't do certain classic flavors. Case in point, I was at Walmart with my daughter and she wanted mint ice cream. There wasn't a whole lot of options, but since a people seem to be checking out the other Humboldt review, let's take a crack at....

Food Mascot Families & the Nerd Lunch Episode 246

Hey everybody, it's time for me to make another appearance on the Nerd Lunch podcast! I'm always happy to hang with our pals CT, Jeeg, and Pax and today's food themed topic is talking about the families of food mascots. I don't believe food mascots are as prevalent as they once were, but before listening to the show, try to think up a couple of mascot families from your childhood and see if they get mentioned in the show.

Blue Bell Cookie Two Step Ice Cream

RECALL ALERT: Certain containers of this flavor were recalled today, thank you for everyone that pointed it out. Specifics can be found here on Blue Bell's site. They are saying an outside firm delivered possibly contaminated cookie dough chunks. Please check your containers.

[New for 2016, by CT of Nerd Lunch] Oh people, how you love your froyo and your over-indulgence of toppings mixed with multiple yogurt flavors. If I love Snickers pieces on ice cream and I love marshmallows on ice cream and I love butterscotch sauce on ice cream, why wouldn't I love all three together? I guess on some level that makes sense. Although that's not how it works for me. I'm a man of simple taste. When I hit the froyo place, I get one base flavor and maybe one complementary flavored topping. It's a different philosophy and neither approach is right or wrong.

[New for Fall 2016] You know what I love about Perry's? Their willingness to try something new. They have a range of classic flavors but they get today's media cycle. They realize that you need a mix of beloved regulars and new stuff. Not all of the new flavors will work, but who cares, it's how you learn and grow [don't worry, their excellent pumpkin ice cream is back again as well].

Trader Joe's Organic Vanilla Fudge Chip Ice Cream

[New for August 2016] The freezer aisle is pretty boring right now. Actually, it kind of maddeningly boring. That was a hard word to spell, but anyway. All the seasonal and limited stuff has been repeats this year and all the new stuff got dumped at the beginning of the year, so where does that leave me? Should I start hibernating during the second half of the year? Maybe I should just head to Trader Joe's since I haven't been there in awhile.

[New for 2016] Yeah, I broke my every other day posting schedule again, sorry about that. It's been tough these last few weeks as there's just so little to choose from, life is in flux as school mode kicks back in, and allergies are beating me up. It's just one of those Wednesdays that feels like a Thursday even though it's kind of like a Tuesday and oh my brain is spinning too fast and I need ice cream. Ok, time for a quick review of something from Market Basket. It's been lingering in the freezer for awhile as it was part of my plan to fill in during this lackluster summer we are having. I don't think I've ever officially covered anything from MB before, but I wanted to try something a bit different from them, plus I had a positive experience with Turkey Hill Butter Brickle ice cream.

JC's Mint Chocolate Cookie Pie Pop

It has been a year since we mentioned JC's Pie Pops and a saddening three years since I first sampled their four original flavors. I was so very impressed by those pops when I had them and unfortunately I had to deal with the fact that it wasn't something I could easily pick up at the grocery store. Well a lot has changed over the years. Pie Pops are more readily available, there are more flavors, there is the variety without crumbs, and there is even the truffle version you can find in your grocer's candy section.

This is going to be quick because in real time it's August but the flavor in this hand packed pint is the Graeter's seasonal flavor for February and March. That's right, I got this free pint along with my cheese crown samples and I was saving it for a special occasion and then forgot I had it. Yeah, I'm awesome at remembering stuff!
