Nutella and Kinder Bueno in the Freezer Aisle

Nutella Ice Cream and Kinder Bueno FDD

Describing Nutella ice cream as "Ice Cream with Nutella" is both very amusing and also kind of frustrating. Tell me what the ice cream tastes like! Ok, the press release says "the unmistakable taste of Nutella with swirls of Nutella", so I'm thinking they both taste like Nutella.

Kinder Bueno is hazelnut flavored frozen dairy dessert with nutty filling and cookie crunch. That does sound found despite being frozen dairy dessert.

Nutella is 330 cals per 2/3 cup serving and Kinder Bueno is 340 cals, so very close despite one being frozen dairy dessert and one being ice cream.

These flavors don't just come in faux pints either....

I was at Price Chopper on Wednesday when I saw the kinder bueno cones. The box says they are hazelnut flavored frozen dairy dessert with nutty core and topping in a sugar cone. 220 calories per 3.04 fluid oz cone.

There was also a spot on the shelves for the new Nutella cones as well. Similar to the pint, the description is "ice cream with Nutella in a sugar cone". They clock in at 250 calories per 3.04 fluid oz cone.

Now I probably won't be trying any of these any time soon, but a buddy of mine did try the kinder bueno "pint" and said "it's heavy on the hazelnuts".

Hazelnut Cocoa Shortbread is a buttery cookie filled with chocolate hazelnut spread. There are also toasted hazelnuts in the mix.

Salted Caramel Shortbread is a buttery cookie filled with salted caramel.

One fun fact is that these say "Product of Germany" on the back.

Are you interested at $5.49 for a 3.5oz bag? I'm not sure if they are anywhere but Target yet.

They sent over samples of three new flavors at the end of January: the excellent One Buffalo, Bourbon Caramel Pecan, and this one. Now hazelnut is slowly making some inroads to be more mainstream in the freezer aisle, but how will this version stack up against all the others we've seen?

[By Nick] Seeing as the girly and I are down South, there's no way we weren't trying some of Kroger's offerings. Actually, I was in sensory overload just by the selection of ‎not only Kroger brand flavors but all the flavors of Mayfield as well as Trumoo ice creams that I can't get up North (both are owned by Dean Foods). But we were on a mission and those will have to wait because I've heard amazing things about Kroger's Private Selection line. Now deciding on what to try was a different story. There's just so many options that sounded appealing. However, my girlfriend and I are hazelnut freaks so we had to try out their hazelnut options first.

[By Nick, For 2014 & 2015] ‎As you might have noticed, I haven't been a fan of all of these companies jumping on the gelato bandwagon. However, I was actually excited when I heard Graeter's getting in on the action. If there's anyone who understands the craft and tradition behind their products, it would be them. I mean their normal ice cream is one of the densest you'll find on the market due to their french pot process. The fact that they don't cut corners and use high quality ingredients doesn't hurt either.

The folks over at Graeter's offered to send me samples of their new gelato flavors and I don't know anyone who could say no to free gelato. When they arrived, I was happy to see I got two of the non-standard flavors: Hazelnut Truffle and Caramel Truffle. Seeing as there's been a hazelnut boom as of late, let's start there.

Ben & Jerry's Hazed & Confused Core Ice Cream

[New for 2014, discontinued] Ok, so I got a little cranky yesterday when huffpo and eoline both ran with crazy headlines ushering in the new core breakthrough in ice cream technology. Really guys? You can't do five minutes of research before posting? Just go to Ben & Jerry's website and read how karamel sutra, the defacto core flavor, came out in 2002. No ground was broken yesterday, we're just merely introducing the next revision of this concept (which B&J's has already been testing in Europe for a few years now). Oy, anyway, rant over. There are three more core flavores to try. Our Nosh Show bud Junk Food Guy already gave the thumbs up to That's My Jam (our review here), and Nick has confirmed that Salty Caramel is pretty salty, so let's check out the other fudge core flavor.
