Treat of the Week:
PhillySwirl Fudge Swirl Stix

Our treat of the week comes to us courtesy of an evening run to super Walmart. We actually picked out a treat yesterday, but it's so hard to go by the freezer section and not pick SOMETHING. My daughter really wanted those pops that look like giant M&Ms, but at 12 grams of saturated fat, I decided we should hold off. Well, hold off is the wrong word: I did say no, but it was followed by "these look cool, how about we try these instead?" Don't worry, at some point we will try the M&Ms.

Now the package is very attractive on these pops. You see 3 very well swirled treats and the words "99% fat free" and "57 calories". I love ice cream, but there's nothing wrong with mixing in low cal snacks, especially when you've already had 3 slices of dessert earlier in the day. So I pop open the box and see 12 treats before me, all wrapped in clear plastic. Not only that, but they are labeled. How many times have you opened up a mixed bag of treats (cough)popsicles(cough) and not had the foggiest which is which?

Ok, after being impressed by the packaging, the reality train comes slamming into the picture. What in the world is before me? This looks nothing like the pretty picture. Where's my perfect blend of vanilla and fudge? I'm trying not to let it bother me, but talk about a horrible first impression. Ok, breathe, and go in for the taste test, that's what really matters. Diagnosis? sorry, having trouble finding the flavor, give me a couple more bites. The problem is, when you make a pretty FAKE picture, the buyer is led into believing that they'll get alternating bites of vanilla and fudge. Instead, it's just one boring, messy, unfun, unamusing flavor. Exaggerating? I washed it down with a bowl of Frosted Rice Krispies.

There are 3 flavors in the box, so let's hope for better results next time.

Breyer's Peanut Butter Fudge Light Ice Cream Review

Update: This 1/2 Fat flavor has long since been retired as it never made it to the Smooth & Dreamy line.

So, let's get right to the point: Do I have any complaints about this ice cream? Nope! None at all. It's just a straight forward double churned peanut butter with nice flavor and texture. There's a "fudge" swirl to give the peanut butter a tilt towards the chocolaty side. Now I use quotes because on the container you see a dark brown fudge, but in reality it's a light brown swirl that gently blends with the ice cream.

If you've got a hunkerin' for peanut butter, this is the way to go. If you want more of a pb cup vibe, I'm thinking some chocolate syrup would be the way to go. This is a nice flavor, but I've got that urge to add a topping or two.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

As much as I love ice cream, I don't think I've ever had ice cream on the Thanksgiving table. However, Turkey day isn't Turkey day without Pumpkin Pie, oh how I love a nice cold, fresh pumpkin pie.

Thing is, we didn't make a pumpkin pie yesterday, we made a Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle. Now, I need to make something clear: if you had asked me a week ago what a "trifle" was, I would be totally clueless. I've actually had a tasty chocolate trifle before, but had no idea it was called a trifle. I actually heard about this from a friend and I knew I had to take a crack at it.

Now I haven't sampled it yet, but I do look forward to finishing our meal with it! Hope everyone has a great day filled with tasty food, I know we will!

Update: Oh yeah, this is tastier then it looks. Ok, technically it would look tastier if I had made it in a trifle bowl instead of a punch bowl, but that's beside the point. If you even remotely like pumpkin or gingerbread, you need to try this chilly treat. The good news is we have a bunch of leftovers too. In case you need more convincing, check out this video.

Breyer's Strawberry Ice Cream

I don't think I've ever taken the time to appreciate a bowl of Strawberry ice cream. I mean, I've had it a million times as a kid, but I was either covering it in chocolate sauce or smushing it with chocolate ice cream to make a tangy chocolately treat.
Now, let's be honest, I don't plan on doing a lot of appreciating. As much as I enjoyed the fresh strawberry taste or the great texture of Breyers Strawberry Ice Cream, I don't think I could eat it all the time. It's another well made Breyers flavor, I just don't rush to the freezer for it. It reminds me of that great cool whip & strawberry frosting you can make and put on fresh angel food cake. Mmmmmm. Doh! Now I want some angel food cake.

So good job Breyers, I'm glad to see this is just as tasty as it was 20 years ago.

Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches

Well, it cost about 2 hours of effort, and devouring it took less than two minutes, but Wow! You can't beat a homemade cookie ice cream sandwich, especially when the cookies are still warm! You have to try it sometime. It was really hard not to make myself a second one. Mmmmmm, so very very good!

The cookies are chocolate chocolate chip and are from Mrs. Field's Best Ever Cookie Book. The center is a slice of Turkey Hill's fantastic Black Raspberry ice cream. Mrs. Field's book says you can freeze cookies, so I just made a couple of ice cream sandwiches for the freezer, we'll see how they hold up.

On Second Scoop: COOL!! You can freeze these for later! The only thing I would do differently next time would be to make the cookies a bit thinner so they are easier to eat after freezing. Overall, I LOVE the chocolate cookie and black raspberry combo!

100 Words

I'll teach my dog 100 words.

The first six words I'll teach my pup are "ice cream, sherbet, sorbet, spoon and scoop".

I'll teach him "sundae, milk shake, frappe, and sugar cone"
There's no need to eat a boring old bone.

Then I'll teach him "waffle bowl, jimmies, sprinkles, and whip cream",
oh this is my lifelong dream.

We'll move on to "cherry, caramel syrup, butterscotch, and hot fudge sauce".
Everyone who sees him will be at a loss.

I can't forget to teach him about flavor.
"Rocky Road, Black Raspberry, and Cookie Dough", those are the ones to savor.

Can't forget "cookies & cream, vanilla and strawberry".
They are all part of the fantastic world of "frozen dairy".

Ok, I had to try. This is one of my favorite books that I still have from my childhood, and I've read it to my daughter dozens of times: I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words. Yeah, we color a lot too.

Treat of the Week:
Edy's Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream Bars

You know, I think I'm losing my appreciation for ice cream bars, I just seem to be on a string of disappointment. The Crunch bar, the Butterfinger bar... Don't get me wrong, these Edy ones aren't bad, it's just that I keep expecting to be impressed and it just doesn't happen. Actually, I was impressed with my first bite, but then it went a bit downhill from there. Ok, let me start from the beginning.

I was debating the treat of the week when I saw Edy's take on the light ice cream bar. They look good enough on the cover, so in the shopping cart they went. I unwrapped one tonight and started getting my hopes up. They look even tastier in person. I took the first bite and was very pleased. That bite was mostly made up of the tasty chocolate coating. Mmmmm, couldn't wait to take a second bite. The only problem was, there wasn't as much coating in that second bite. I continued onward. The light ice cream itself isn't bad at all. While the chocolate coating itself is good, the cookie bits in the coating seem to suffer than bland fate that I keep running into.

Overall I was basically satisfied, but that first bite did set the bar just a bit too high. I'd say that I like it a bit more than the Breyer's ones, but we are kind comparing apples (Cookies & Cream) and oranges (Vanilla & Almond) here. I know what to expect now, so I'll try to eat the next one a bit slower and we'll see what happens.

On Second Scoop: Ok, I just had another one and I was a little too harsh the other day. You have to go slow when you eat these so that your taste buds have time to recognize the tasty chocolate shell in every bite. The texture of the underlying ice cream is also nice. (It's funny because it has a brownish color to it actually, almost looks like chocolate cookies and cream).

Friendly's Raspberry Orange Lemon Sherbet

With my total lack of enthusiasm for Friendly's Sundaes To-Go, you might think I don't have any appreciation for store bought Friendly's at all, but this couldn't be further from the truth. To be honest, I don't know why I don't buy Friendly's as much as I use to. We use to buy it a lot in college. In fact, before slow churned, double churned, and cold churned, I fell back on Friendly's Black Raspberry as my "diet" ice cream since it has some of the lowest calorie and fat contents around.

Friendly's Raspberry Orange Lemon Sherbet

Ok, back to reviewing. So, over the last week I've been snacking on Friendly's Sherbet. The big problem I have with sherbet is that they always seem to mix the good flavors with the bad and that drives me nuts. Well, Friendly's goes with the interesting trifecta of Raspberry, Lemon, and Orange. I'll admit I was a little afraid, I always am with sherbet, but considering that it was on sale at $2.50 (for 1.75 quarts), I had to go for it.

Well, I'm glad I did. The overall nice quality of the sherbet is what I've come to expect from Friendly's. It's not that great real fruit flavor you get with Hola Fruta! but it's still a really nice raspberry sherbet. I'd be plenty happy with just this one flavor. I'm not a huge lemon fan, but it's nice. It's got a good flavor, like a nice glass of lemonade. The orange is pretty much what you might expect from an orange cremecicle. Get a bite of all three together and you won't be disappointed.

Friendly's Sundaes To-Go:
Nutty Caramel Crunch Sundae

Boy was I hungry for ice cream yesterday. I had trouble waiting to a mere 10:30 to take the seal off my last Sundae To-Go. I decided to let it sit for a few minutes so the toppings could melt a bit. Well, that was a mistake since I was taken away from my ice cream for the next six hours fixing two very unfriendly problems (don't worry, the ice cream went back in the freezer before I started the work).

So, it's a new day, and nothing has exploded or broken yet, so it's time for ice cream. The last one to try is the Nutty Caramel Crunch Sundae. At least there's no chalky peanut butter to mess it up.

The exact description is "nougat ice cream, caramel & fudge toppings, with chocolate covered peanuts & chips". We've all had nougat, which is good, because I have no idea how to describe. I let the sundae sit briefly and then crack it open.

Cool, the toppings are back to a 50/50 ratio. I see a half dozen or so chocolate covered peanuts and the thin, chocolate chips on top. Hmmm, looks tasty enough, this review has potential. I dig in and ...it's ok, but not really winning me over. The base ice cream is a nice texture, but the taste is almost non-existent. The fudge and caramel are ok. Not sure why they call chocolate covered peanuts "crunch" but whatever, it's all semantics anyway.

So, that makes 3 boring sundaes. Oh well, I guess you can't really expect a tasty Friendly's sundae at only a fifth of the price.

Brigham's Just Jimmies Ice Cream Review

If you live in New England, I'm guessing you've heard of Brigham's ice cream. I've avoided reviewing Brigham's ice cream because I've been trying to stick with national brands, but that line of thinking doesn't really hold up when you consider I also enjoy talking about local places like Uhlman's. So, I gave in today, not so much because the blog was calling to me, it's because the ice cream was.

Dubba's FrostaRutter Ice Cream

Ok, the name is a work in progress, but it's not that I haven't been thinking about it ...I had lots of time thinking about it as I cleaned up the floor, but more on that later.

Ok, so what in the world is FrostaRutter. Awhile back, my daughter insisted we pick up some soy butter. Well, when I did that, I also decided to pick up some almond butter, the nice overpriced all natural kind. Creamy and Roasted to be precise. I've been thinking about what to mix with the almond butter for awhile. I had decided on breaking up these little chocolate alphabet cookies we had since they kinda taste like brownies. At some point it hit me, why not use the leftover chocolate whipped frosting from the cupcakes?

Dubba's FrostaRutter Ice Cream Recipe
1 cup of light cream
1 3/4 cup of 2% milk
1/2 cup almond butter
1/2 dark brown sugar
--1 Tbsp Vanilla
--2 Tbsp Sugar
Frosting

Now, before starting, I went through my peanut butter chocolate chip recipe in the hopes of improving upon the original. I didn't want to overload on the peanut butter flavor, and i definitely didn't want too many chocolate chips. We started by mixing the cream and milk, and then the sugar. I hadn't opened the almond butter yet, so I spent a good 10-15 minutes stirring the oil back into the very solid almond butter. The only good side to this was that when I was done mixing, I was left with a very liquidy mess that stirred very well into the mix.

Now even I added more milk this time in hopes of keep the almond taste tame, it was still pretty strong. This is when 1/2 the vanilla and a smidge more sugar went in. Into the Ice-20 it went. After a bit, it was still strong, so I added the other half of the vanilla. The roasted almond taste is pretty strong, but it's not neccessarily a bad thing, it's different in a good way. I couldn't eat it all the time, but I like it.

Look, I made cream of wheat ice cream!

Ok, it looks a little funny at this point. There was a little accident in the kitchen and the ice cream wound up churning for about twice as long as I usually let it. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing since it had warmed up a bit with all the mixing before hand.

Now, I saved two containers. I made a small container of just almond butter ice cream to see how it would freeze. In the bigger container, I scooped in one side of almond butter, gooped in a giant wad of frosting in the middle, and then filled the other side with almond butter. I really want to make a swirl this time, so I only to a few stirs to mix it all together (not a perfect swirl, but I'm still learning)

not to toot my own horn, but that looks good!

Oh yeah, the floor. Well, as the ice cream was nearing completion, I went to grab my freezer containers from the top shelf. That was fine, but when I went to put the extra containers back, I wound up stretching a little too far and my untucked shirt flopped onto a very full glass of milk that was on the counter. As I came back down, the milk came with me. Oh yeah. I got a nice milk bath as the glass bounced off me and went smashing onto the tile floor. The milk went everywhere as did the glass (though it could have been worse I guess). So, like I said, I had some time to think about the name, a very bad play on FlufferNutter. I have frosting instead of fluff, so that's Frosta, and Rutter is, ummm, iunno, sounded better that FrostaMotter (feel free to chime in with a better name!)

On Second Scoop: Almond Butter Ice Cream: I forgot to mention that I taste tested the Almond butter after I had mixed it back up. It is TERRIBLE. It is so horribly and painfully dry. Well, after a night in the freezer, the AB Ice Cream has gone back to that roasted dryness. Disgusting. Right into the trash.

On Second Scoop: FrostraRutter Ice Cream: Having said that, FrostraRutter is actually still pretty tasty. The whipped sugary goodness goes a long way to save this flavor, not that I've had a whole bowl of it, but it's way better than the plain stuff.

Breyer's Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream

2012 Update: As reported by fellow (former) fans of Breyers, Cherry Vanilla has also been carelessly demoted to a frozen dairy dessert. I know this wasn't a weekly purchase for me, but it was quality stuff, and now it's junk.

Having grown up with Breyer's, there's always a certain amount of faith I have in them to serve me a nice, refreshing treat in the form of one of their all natural flavors. When you go Overload! or Double Churned, you can't be sure what to expect, but when they stick to the basics, you are almost always good to go.

Case in point is our new freezer friend, Cherry Vanilla. I've mentioned in the past that I'm not a huge fan of most things cherry, but what Breyer's has done is slip Cherry back to the mild side by blending it into their tasty all natural vanilla ice cream. To me, it's just the right amount of cherry flavor. There are some cherry pieces mixed in, but they've totally mellowed in their new home away from home. So, good job Breyer's, this one was a nice pleasant surprise.

Jon Donaire's
Strawberries & Cream Ice Cream Cake

I first discovered this tasty treat shortly after they built the new super Walmart about five minutes from my house. I had been looking for a birthday cake that was something special, something more interesting than a plain old cake, but something a bit healthier than a standard ice cream cake. Well, I found something unique in a lone refrigerator in the Walmart bakery section.

The description should get the old taste buds going: It's Vanilla Ice Cream swirled with strawberries. This is on top of a 1" layer of very soft sponge cake. On the very top we have a ring of whip cream and a layer of very tangy (i.e. cheap tasting) strawberry. This is pretty much the only drawback of the cake, everything else has really good flavor.

Now, I do have one unfortunate point to bring up. The first time we had this cake, it was near perfect and was quickly devoured. When we had it over the weekend (no, it wasn't my birthday), the strawberries were non-existent. Case in point: I found this video review. Notice all the cool strawberry chunks blended into the ice cream. My wife said she got a few tiny chunks in her slice, but I had none in mine. The cake was still good, but it wasn't like it was the first time.

C is for Cookie...

...that's good enough for me! Oh man, I think my brain is about to explode ...yet I just took another bite. I cant remember the last time i ate something this chocolatey. Weeeeeeee! round and round the brain goes. It's a giant, thick, chocolate cookie that melts in your mouth as you eat it. Tastes like your eating melted chocolate chips. One of the benefits of having a company meeting at lunch time. Most of the cookies were regular chocolate chip, but I snagged the last chocolate chocolate chip one.

There are about 3 bites left ....not sure I'm going to make it.....

oooooo .....think i need to go for a walk to clear my head....

shame to waste .....man that was a good cookie

Friendly's Sundae to Go: Reese's Pieces Sundae

I'm a big fan of going to Friendly's. The food may be awful, but the sundaes always hit the spot, so to be fair, I picked up two more Sundaes To-Go this weekend. I've got a sandwich for lunch, so there was plenty of room to shove my lunchbag full of ice packs (5 to be precise), and bring the sundaes in. I actually made it past 10:30 before opening one of them up.

Breyer's Double Churn Chocolate Cookies & Cream
A Fat Free Ice Cream Rescooped

DISCONTINUED

As you may remember, I was fortunate enough to receive a shipment of some new no/low fat treats from Unilver (Breyer's, Popsicle, Klondike, etc). Unfortunately, the -100 degree dry ice was not gentle on the Fat Free Cookies & Cream. The cookie pieces became hard as rocks and made judgement of the ice cream very difficult.

Yesterday after the cleaning, I finally picked up a fresh container. I've been dieing for some good chocolate ice cream all week long. So, we went with the early afternoon ice cream break yesterday. I dig in and am shocked by what I discover. Nope, not more hard frozen chunks, those are fine now. Actually, I'm shocked by the flavor of ice cream itself. Funny, I didn't really notice it last time, the rocks must have distracted me. It totally has that no fat funk to it.

I'm sure I will still eat it, especially since I try not to load up on the high-fat stuff right before bed. Something like this can be a no fat alternative, at least til I pick up a better tasting low-fat alternative.

On Second Scoop: or would that be fourth scoop? anyway, yeah, the fat free funk is unavoidable. It's not awful, but I just can't recommend it. I'll stick with the low-fat Breyer's instead.

State of the Freezer Address

Wow, it's been a fast six months! Life really does go faster as you get older. The good news is this post is #146!! Ok, technically I had hoped to make it to 150, but hey, I'm still pretty close.

The big question is: After six months, how is the freezer holding up? Well, there was an incident about 10 days ago. We got home from shopping and there was no more room in the freezer. Food was literally falling out onto the floor. We had to make something for lunch just to make room for the new stuff. I realized it was time for a change. I've been slowly cleaning out the freezer, and then yesterday and today I REALLY cleaned out the freezer. Out goes the pumpkin pie (even my daughter didn't really like it, and she loves all ice cream). Out goes the Stone Ridge Creamery black raspberry (why eat it when I have the Turkey Hill Black Raspberry to enjoy). Out goes some home made stuff (can't save it forever). I let my daughter polish off the rest of the cake batter and she really enjoyed it (I had forgotten how good it smells when it's gotten a little soft, made me want to bake a cake). Oh yeah, tossed out the old skinny cow ice cream sandwiches (still have the box though, it holds all the treats of the week). Ok, you get the idea.

Does all this cleaning mean I've given up? NO WAY! Fear not fellow ice cream lovers. After cleaning, we went right to Shaw's and stocked up with 3 fresh containers of ice cold goodiness. I also picked up two more of those little Friendly's Sundae Cups (on sale ofcourse). That puts us at 5 containers total plus a box full of a variety of treats. I have no plans on slowing down anytime soon. In fact, I really hope everyone will consider sharing an opinion now and then. Whether we agree or disagree, I'm more than happy to hear your take on a flavor or tasty treat.

In closing, I hope everyone is enjoying the blog. My main goal continues to be to inspire you to take a nice relaxing ice cream break. If you have any thoughts, questions, comments, ideas, disagreements or anything else, just send an email to onsecondscoop at gmail dot com. Have a good night everybody!

When exactly is "too early"?

I am a very big proponent of a nice healthy breakfast. Two smaller breakfasts also work. Case in point, I get very cranky if I don't get my morning OJ as soon as I wake up. I may have a little something with it like a piece of toast. I go get ready for work and then I come grab my real breakfast. It could be cereal, something toasted, or something from the freezer, it all depends how quickly I'm trying to get out the door. Well, at 6 AM I wanted something from the freezer, and it wasn't waffles.

At first I thought I wanted a Milky Way, not sure why, I think because it's been so long. Then I realized I was dieing for one of those Breyer's Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches. It may have only been just after 6 AM, but it hit the spot! It was a great way to start my long commute. (The timing puts it way before my pre-8AM summertime snack)

I do have a confession to make though. Even with my well honed snacking skills, I still get thrown off by the over abundance of leftover Halloween candy. I try hard to pace myself, but for whatever reason, that Milky Way was still calling from my snack drawer a few hours later. I ate it about 15 minutes ago and regret it. I should have waited.

Nestle Crunch Loaded Ice Cream Bar

You know, I've always wondered what frozen cardboard would taste like. Honestly, the NEW! King Size Nestle Crunch Loaded vanilla ice cream bar looks way better than it tastes. I didn't see how I could go wrong with "crunchy bits inside and out!". Well, you go wrong when those "crunchy" bits are awful.

Maybe I should put the disclaimer that this came from the same place as that Butterfinger Ice Cream Bar came from. Just like that bar, my treat is quite flavorless and underwhelming. Hmmm, date says best by 6/19/09. I guess these things just aren't that good.

Dubba's Galaxy Quest Ice Cream

GRRRRR, I'm angry 'cause I suck

I was really excited about this week's recipe. We have plenty of leftover Halloween candy, so I thought I really had a winner when I thought I could take a crack at making my own Milky Way ice cream. The secret to my confidence? I just bought some chocolate malt the other day, Ovaltine to be specific.

Dubba's Galaxy Quest Ice Cream Recipe
3 cups of fat free half & half
8 tbsp of Ovaltine
3/8 cup of dark brown sugar
1 chopped up (frozen) Milky Way
many squirts of Nesquik

It started off as 2 cups of half & half, and according to the directions, that meant 8 tablespoons of Ovaltine. We then dumped in the dark brown sugar and the milky way bits. We mixed it for a bit, then tried it and the malt flavor was way too strong. More half & half went in, and then into the Ice-20. Still too strong, more half & half goes in and then I started squirting in the Nesquik. Oh, the malt flavor just won't go away. I know it's too late, but I go for more Nesquik (and now I need to buy more). I really really wish I had some fresh caramel for this one.

the final result is unamusing, at least to my palette. The malt is way too powerful. I wanted to go way more mild then this. As I finished, I did start to wonder if some marshmallow would balance it out, but it was too late to mix it in. The milky way chunks are also very tiny and don't add much.

Well, there's going to have to be a sequel to this Galaxy Quest, one with a happy ending and way less Malt. I think a 1 tbsp to 1 cup of liquid might be a good starting spot. If you've never seen the real Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen and a bunch of others, check it out next time it's on TBS or one of the other channels.

On Second Scoop: Sitting in the freezer has actually mellowed the flavor a bit. I still don't like it, but it is more tolerable. It also seems to have frozen better than in the past, which can only be thanks to these funky food storage containers my wife picked up. They are made my Ball.

Edy's Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Review

why o why must i do these things to myself. I saw Edy's Pumpkin Pie (frozen dairy dessert) the other day and I knew I had to give it a try. It seemed like a noble enough idea, but deep down my instincts knew it just wasn't going to work for me.

Well ...it doesn't work for me. The flavor is that of pumpkin as one would expect, but why would i want this in an ice cream? I love pumpkin pie, chilled ofcourse, but I just don't like this. Maybe I'm just lost without the crust. (Ok, the somewhat rubbery texture doesn't help either)

I tried it with chocolate sauce (nesquik) but it didn't add anything. So, I decided to try some butterscotch (the caramel I had went bad). BIG mistake. HUGE. Ginormous. The butterscotch brought out the worst in the ice cream. Not sure what it reacted with, but it was absolutely awful. I had to instantly wash it down with some pretzels. Be careful with this one!

On Second Scoop: I tried to have some more but I just don't enjoy this flavor at all. I also got the word in from the roving reporters ...I'm not alone on my diagnosis.
