More Dr. Bombay Flavors?

[New for Mid 2025] I can't believe I'm saying this, but two more Dr. Bombay flavors will be showing up at your local Walmart! I don't know who is buying these, but someone is!

credit: Dr. Bombay / Walmart

Sticky Caramel Apple is green apple sherbet and caramel ice cream with crunchy peanuts and salted caramel swirls.

Long Beach Fruit Cart is mango sherbet and coconut ice cream with pineapple pieces and spiced mango swirls.

Are you interested by either of these at four bucks a pint? Maybe you've seen them? I'll admit that they are certainly creative sounding, but with their track record, it's still not enough to bring me back in the Dr. Bombay fold. What do you think?

[New for 2016] Hello all. I just wanted you to know it took me way too long to pick which review to post today, but in the end, fate decided. You see, this is our 1500th review but I'll get more in to that on Sunday (anniversary time!). Ahhhh, nevermind, this story is boring, let's get to the review!

Luigi's Sherbet Review

[New for 2012, at dollar stores in 2013, pints gone for 2014 (4oz cups still available)] Wow, over 10 months without a sherbet review. Well, it's not like it's ever been a hot market, but Luigi's, yes Luigi's the Italian ice guys, have got a special new treat for us. And when I say special, I mean only a buck a pint on sale at Shaw's a couple of months ago.

As a fan of Luigi's - and as an even bigger fan of sherbet -- and as a hungry, cheap, penny pinchin', frozen treat lovin' fella -- there's was no way I was leaving the store without these dollar treats.

Hola Fruta Black Cherry Lemon
A Sherbet Review

Never seen Hola Fruta? I feel bad for you
Seen it but haven't boughten it? shame on you!
Get to eat it all the time? OOOh I'm jealous of you!

It's been a long time since I've praised my love of Hola Fruta but that's because no one carries it around here. Shaws did carry it long enough for me to get hooked, but then it disappeared never to be found again, until now... at Wegman's! YAY!

I had four pint-sized flavors to choose from and it was this newer looking black cherry lemon sherbet that really got my attention. ($2.49 a pint) Oh it's so nice to have an all natural pure fruit sherbet in my grasp once again.  I'm so excited!!

Turkey Hill Raspberry Cream Swirl Review

It's time to play "how late can Dubba be with a limited edition flavor". Ok, guess how many months? Got a number? Ok, the answer is....  4!! Now in my defense, New England is usually a month behind to start, but for the sake of truthiness, the following flavor is the JUNE limited edition flavor of the month. (Heck, I waited so long to review this summer flavor that it's snowing!! AHHHHH!!!!!)

circa 2011 packaging

here it is: Vanilla flavored ice cream swirled with gourmet raspberry sherbet. Wait, sherbet? Yeah, I missed that when I grabbed this container, I need to pay more attention when I pick these things up. Well, at least it will be fairly low fat this way.

Friendly's Watermelon Sherbet Review

Hey everyone, sorry I've been distracted (a post on that later), but I gotta say something, the following product is just nasty.

This is Friendly's Watermelon Sherbet.
I have tried 2 or 3 times to eat it, but I just can't do it.
What's so bad about it?

Well eating this sherbet is like eating watermelon bubblegum, and while I found eating grape bubblegum strangly amusing when I was like 8 (despite my parents telling me not to), as an adult I have no urge to do such things. I'm just not a huge fan of watermelon flavored products, and this particular treat just takes me to an unpleasant place. I'm afraid this container is destined for the trash.

Raspberry Hood Sherbet

As I sat there in my chair, slowly eating my sherbet and slowly working my way through the Karate Kid remake, I had an ephiphany. No, not about the movie (we can get to that later), I mean about the sherbet. First, let's talk about my inspiration.

I will forever mourn the loss of my Hola Fruta supply. In a pinch, I will pick up whatever I can find. In this case, it's one of Hood's simple plastic raspberry sherbert containers. Notice the words "artificial flavor and color added". Oh boy....

Gaga's Rainbow Sherbetter Review

The following review is brought to you courtesy of Gaga. You see, the very friendly owners of Gaga's happened to stumble upon my post about my lost carton of Gaga's, so they sent over a few coupons to make up for it! How nice of them, especially since the loss was totally my fault!

I need to also preface with the fact that they sent these coupons about two months ago, but since I've been shopping at Market Basket on the way home, I haven't been able to pick any up. Well, I was finally at Shaws at lunch and spied the Rainbow SherBetter and realized it was time to correct this issue.

Behold Gaga's "smooth as ice cream - fresh like sherbet" all natural Rainbow SherBetter frozen dessert. It's certainly a catchy looking container plus the rainbow flavor saves me the trouble of having to decide which flavor to try first. It's a mix of their lemon, orange, and raspberry flavors. The only thing not in here is their chocolate flavor (which in my opinion would probably not make for a pleasant combo anyway).

Hood Wildberry Sherbet Review

Hood doesn't get a whole lotta love on this blog, mainly because they crank out low quality stuff for those on a tight budget. However, I like to be fair and check in now and then. Since I was in need of some sherbet, I decided to try Hood's Wildberry sherbet (which was on sale of course).
On the left is the raspberry, the thin strip in the middle is the blackberry, and on the right is the wild strawberry. My first few bites were of the strawberry and I thought "hmmm, this isn't too bad". I guess Hood can't mess up sherbet....or can they? I took a bite of the purplish blackberry and realized it was kind of flavorless. That's odd, but maybe that's why there is only a thin strip of the stuff.

Schoep's Sherbet Review

The final member of the ice cream club shipment is a swirl sherbet from Wisconsin's Schoep's Ice Cream. This little guy is made up of lime-ish, orange-ish, and raspberry-ish flavored sherbets. Now isn't that a strange way to put it? Well, there's a reason.

Cedar Crest Rootbeer Twister Review

Ok, I'll admit it, I was a little afraid of the third contestant in the ice cream of the month club after my experience with Breyer's Root Beer Float. What you see before you is Root Beer Twister from Wisconsin's Cedar Crest Ice Cream. It's half root beer sherbet and half vanilla ice cream.

The good news is that this is much more enjoyable than the Breyers, well, to me any way. My first couple of bites were from the Root beer sherbet. It's definitely root beer, but it's more mellow than the Breyers. What I mean is that a straight shot of this sherbet is more enjoyable than the RB sherbet/vanilla mix in the Breyers. I also appreciate the fact that it's "twisted" and not layered like the Breyers. If you needed a break in the Breyers, you just couldn't do it, you always scooped both flavors. Not so here. If I want to cleanse my palate, I can take a couple of scoops of just vanilla, and it's a nice vanilla too. Next, I can take a bite of 2 parts vanilla to 1 part root beer, or 3:1, 4:1, 1:1, it's up to me and I really appreciate having that choice.

Sure the Breyers is cool looking, and great if you love root beer floats, but for those of us who don't want our taste buds smacked down with soda buzz, this is a much more pleasant alternative.

Actually, now that I think about it, I just don't like swirled sherbet, I much prefer my flavors separated. I'm a big boy now, I don't need help eating my ice cream... just kidding, swirling has it's limited place. Hmmm, swirling might be the next poll question. Anyway, so this is definitely better than Breyers, but I'm guessing I'll polish off the vanilla portion long before the root beer is gone.

Hola Fruta Margarita Sherbet Review

The unthinkable has happened!! I hate to say it, I really do, but I've discovered a flavor of Hola Fruta I don't like. Sure it's still top notch quality, but the flavor is OHHHH so potent. I guess the problem is that I've only had cheap green lime flavor before, I've never had quality stuff.

Don't be fooled by the Margarita name, there's nothing in here for flavor except lime puree. The first bite was the most shocking, but the following bites we're still quite potent. I don't know what flavor they could mix it with (like they did with blueberry and pomegranite), but I can only recommend this to people who love lime.

Hola Fruta Strawberry Sherbet

It's Hola Fruta Time

It's Hola Fruta Time

YEEEE HAAAAA!

Ok, this is my third Hola Fruta review and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. I'm down a little bit further in the container so I keep hitting tasty strawberry (fresa) chunks. MMMMMM, oh I'm addicted to Hola Fruta, it's gotta be the best sherbet out there. Tastes like frozen strawberries and fresh strawberries at the same time, and in a good way. Do what I do, wait til it's on sale, then try a new flavor! MMMM, oh I want more now.

Stone Ridge Creamery Rainbow Sherbet

Ok, first scoop reviews gonna be a bit concise since my eyeballs are already half closed. Well, I guess the container should be the tip off that this is a swirled sherbet and not a divided sherbet. I'll admit it looked a little funny when I first opened it, but I attempted to dig in anyway.

It's not so much that it's bad, it's that it's not that good. Thankfully it's not one of those salty sherbets. The flavors are just kinda blah. Sure, they are there, but they're weak and not particularly good. I ate it but I became less enthused with every bite. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for sherbet like I thought I was.

On Second Scoop: Yeah, this puppy is just kind of sitting in the freezer. I have a bit now and then, but it just doesn't excite me. I've been spoiled by Hola Fruta. I'm going to rank it below Friendly's Sherbet, and I guess place it in the same spot as Life Saver Sherbet. Maybe it's the fact it looks like yellow snow...

Friendly's Raspberry Orange Lemon Sherbet

With my total lack of enthusiasm for Friendly's Sundaes To-Go, you might think I don't have any appreciation for store bought Friendly's at all, but this couldn't be further from the truth. To be honest, I don't know why I don't buy Friendly's as much as I use to. We use to buy it a lot in college. In fact, before slow churned, double churned, and cold churned, I fell back on Friendly's Black Raspberry as my "diet" ice cream since it has some of the lowest calorie and fat contents around.

Friendly's Raspberry Orange Lemon Sherbet

Ok, back to reviewing. So, over the last week I've been snacking on Friendly's Sherbet. The big problem I have with sherbet is that they always seem to mix the good flavors with the bad and that drives me nuts. Well, Friendly's goes with the interesting trifecta of Raspberry, Lemon, and Orange. I'll admit I was a little afraid, I always am with sherbet, but considering that it was on sale at $2.50 (for 1.75 quarts), I had to go for it.

Well, I'm glad I did. The overall nice quality of the sherbet is what I've come to expect from Friendly's. It's not that great real fruit flavor you get with Hola Fruta! but it's still a really nice raspberry sherbet. I'd be plenty happy with just this one flavor. I'm not a huge lemon fan, but it's nice. It's got a good flavor, like a nice glass of lemonade. The orange is pretty much what you might expect from an orange cremecicle. Get a bite of all three together and you won't be disappointed.

Hola Fruta! Pomegranate & Blueberry Sherbet

I was very excited to see Hola Fruta! on sale this week, and if the freezer wasn't full, I would have bought a couple, not just one. It's $3.99 a quart at Shaw's this week instead of the usual $5.49. Sure, it's a lot for sherbet, but I was pretty confident I would enjoy whatever I picked. Well, I had a half dozen choices in front of me, but after the first test, I knew I wanted to go with the Pomegranate & Blueberry next. Why? Because I've never had a sherbet in either flavor, and if I was going to try a new sherbet, this brand is the way to go.

For whatever reason, I assumed the flavors would be mixed, but you actually get a nice clean, mild pomegranate on one side, and then a nice fruit chunk filled blueberry on the other side. Not big chunks mind you, these are very finely blended pieces well scattered throughout the sherbet. Both taste real nice, and you can put them together in whatever ratio you want. My only odd thought is that for whatever reason, this flavor gave me a massive urge to grab a salty snack.

Mmmmm, the Hola Fruta! website shows this flavor with a big slice of angel food cake, I bet that's good!

On Second Scoop: MMMMMM, so good

Hola Fruta! Raspberry Sherbet

The freezer is very full, but I wandered through the ice cream section anyway. I saw a couple of sale containers I wanted to pick up, but then I spied Hola Fruta! I do get a sherbet craving now and then, and so I somehow I convinced myself to spend $5.49 for a quart of this "All Natural" sherbet. Dinner was going to take a while to cook, so I went in for the sampling.

It's good! I like it. It does have a smidge of that salty flavor that hits you with some sherbets, but overall is it well made. I enjoyed it so much, I had some more after dinner as well. I like the texture too, kind of reminds me of the time when I mixed some vanilla ice cream with my cheap sherbet. It's funny, because if I had to describe it after my first serving, I'd say the aftertaste was like eating a Raspberry Tootsie Roll. On second scoop, I realized just how natural the flavor was. If you let it melt just a bit, you really are hit with that real raspberry flavor. I was really impressed at how it hits you more like fruit than as a frozen treat.

If you don't mind spending a bit extra on sherbet, and you want something a bit more real, give it a try! --Nice: there website shows their sherbet with a slice of Angel food, oh I bet that's good.

Treat of the Week:
Blue Bunny Sherbet Cups

I know I said I would never buy anything from Blue Bunny again, but to be honest, I had no idea who made that which I was buying. My daughter's friends were taking turns bringing in "special snacks", usually something like Hoodsie Cups, but one friend brought in Sherbet Cups. So it was our time to pick a snack and she spied the sherbet cups, and so that is what we bought (why am I talking funny today?)

Now, on first scoop, you are going to be thrown off a bit. The first bite I took hit me as a bit salty, kind of like Good Humor Sherbet does. On second scoop, I started to get use to it and realized it actually wasn't that bad at all. Now, if you try to eat the individual flavors separately, you may be disappointed. What I do is just scoop all 3 at the same time, and you jut wind up with a decent generic sherbet taste. I actually ate the last one tonight, so I'm going to have to get another pack for the freezer. So they aren't fantastic by any means, but they do make a nice low cal, late night snack that seems to avoid the troubles of freezer burn.

as a side note, I despise Good Humor Sherbet. The salty nature of the beast disgusts me immensely, I wound up throwing out the last container. I do like Life Saver Sherbet, but I wind up only eating the cherry, raspberry and orange flavors and leaving the watermelon and pineapple.
