Burger King Frosted Frozen Coke

[New for April 2018] Thanks to a tip from Anne, I headed over to the BK website to see that they now have Frozen Fanta Lemonade (what I assume is basically a lemon ICEE), a frosted frozen fanta lemonade aka frosted lemonade aka trying to steal Chick-fil-A's thunder, and....

Burger King Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shake

[Limited starting Oct 2017] We knew this day was coming right? BK is having way too much fun not to throw another silly cereal flavored shake our way. The best part is that these shakes seem to be available as soon as I hear about them. So, let's head out and grab...

Burger King Lucky Charms Shake

[Limited starting June 2017] I'll admit it, I was not amused when GrubGrade posted the news about another cereal shake at Burger King. Granted, I get the marketing progression here. Let's cycle through popular cereals because the reality is that a lot of these shakes are going to be one and done with little chance of repurchase.

Burger King Froot Loops Shake
and the Nosh Show Episode 102

[New for April 2017] Hello Nosh Show Listeners! Episode 102 is here, and while our good bud Eric wasn't there in person, he was still there in spirit as his name pops up several times during the show. You know what else also pops up in the Nosh or Not Segment? That's right, BK's new Fruit Loop Shake! Wait, I'm supposed to call it the...

Burger King Dr. Pepper Shake

[New for Early 2016] Last week, The Impulsive Buy posted news about two new shakes at Burger King. One of them is the new Oreo Irish Mint Shake though they make no clarification of why it's Irish (and if they say because it's green then someone in their marketing department needs a talking too). The other shake is what has my attention. There's just something fascinating and familiar about the idea of a....

Burger King Pumpkin Spice Oreo Shake

[New for Fall 2015] Or should I say Oreo pumpkin spice shake? Iunno. All I do know is that many of you were angry about the Red Velvet Oreo Shake so let's see if the King can redeem himself a bit. Oh, and no, I didnt get the HA1loween Whopper because I didn't feel like getting 2/3 of my recommended daily sodium intake (Marvo or Ryan didn't seem to like it much anyway).

Burger King Red Velvet Oreo Shake

[New for 2015, back briefly for January 2016] Alright, time for a quick review of Burger King's brand new Red Velvet Oreo Shake. That's right, the BK Oreo Shake now has a brother that's filled with so much red dye that you might run for the hills, or at least turn away. Oh, sure it looked innocent enough at first, but then, when it was done, it looked like this.

It was mostly white before in went in the mixer....

Quick Review: Burger King Orange Freeze

[New for 2014] It was day #2 without leftovers so that meant finding lunch again. I walked to Dunkin yesterday, and it's a gorgeous day again today so I should walk again, but I need to spice my lunch up today.

Dumb Question: Can you freeze a milkshake?

Now we've already dived into what happens if you let a fast food shake dry out, but what if you want to save your shake for later? And I don't just mean in like an hour or so, I mean like days or weeks later. Can something that was never meant to be solid recover from this condition?

This is small vanilla shake from Burger King, and it's 3 weeks old.

Burger King Oreo Shake

With the first of the summer holidays behind us, it's time again for the nosh show!

Episode 5 of The Nosh Show is now available! Head on over to The Nosh Show website to listen and to see a complete rundown of everything we talked about. It's a neat episode that stumbles upon my love of pretzels... and ice cream... and pretzels and ice cream. I make a bad joke about oppressed bacon. I even work Jason Statham into the conversation. We may have talked about other stuff as well. Oh, and factoid correction: The average American eats 1-2 pounds of pretzels a year while the average person from Philly eats 12 pounds (reference).

BK Oreo shake

As always, I've made a few pit stops between episodes and the one I'll show you guys is my lunch time break at Burger King. $7.74 got me the new BK rib sandwich as well a medium size of the new BK Oreo shake. Let's just say it's a good thing I had the shake because I definitely got my fair share of barbecue sauce on my over-processed slab of pork. The sandwich was decent and Ryan was right, the pickles do work here. I just wish the sauce had been a little sweeter and a little less spicy.

Burger King Molten Fudge Sundae Review

[New for 2013] Well, it looks like Burger King is going to continue it's new tradition of limited edition sundaes. That's cool by me because what did your parents and grandparents always tell you? Practice makes perfect.

Here's my molten fudge sundae.... my itty bitty cute sundae, awwww, don't worry little buddy, someday you'll grow up and play with all the big sundaes. (official cup size is 9 ounces). Now the official media image shows the caramel and fudge drizzled together but we all kind of knew that wasn't going to happen in the real world. Instead, we've got chocolate on the bottom and caramel on the top which is fine by me because I'm not a huge fan of BK fudge sauce anyway.

So we've got a still warm molten fudge bite on top and another down below that you can't see. Mmmmm, it's so warm that it's still giving off that freshly cooked smell (update: they are fried, not baked or microwaved). I take a bite of soft serve and caramel to prep my taste buds and then attempt to cut the fudge bite in two so I can take a picture (and spread out the flavor a bit). No go. The shell is surprisingly hard and I foresee making a giant mess if I continue my endeavor, so, I pop the whole thing in my mouth. Mmmm, so warm and smushy. I have to admit that it's fun to eat. It's like chomping down on a warm Dunkin Donuts chocolate munchkin (which is a chocolate cake donut if you've never had one).

The downside is that I wish I had waited for this big bite. There is a bit of a warm funk that has me shudder for a sec. It's hard to describe, and it could just be me, but something about a warm gooey center and melted softserve just throws me off at first. It's not like ice cream melting on a fresh gooey brownie, it's more artificial then that. I think if I had broken up that first bite and spread it around, I probably wouldn't have even noticed that much.

The sauces are a hit and a miss for me. Sure the squirt of each may look neat, but flavor is what counts at the end. That's why I would rather see a double shot of sweet caramel sauce to play off the warm lava bites. I just don't think the chocolate adds anything, in fact, I think it takes a notch off this one.

I quickly make my way to the end of the sundae and decide to take another crack at chopping these quarter size molten fudge bites in half. Doh! My spoon is stuck. Oh man, it's just one of those days. I take a bite and reveal the semi gooey insides. Sorry it didn't photograph well, but at least you can see the distinct dark outer shell, a bit of brown cake on the inside of that, and then the gooey center. You know what? I kind of prefer the bites by themselves. In fact, I think next time I'd rather just get a caramel sundae with an order of bites on the side. I think I'll enjoy myself more, plus I'll actually be full when I'm done.

So overall, I think this was a neat little three dollar break, though I don't see this as a repeat purchase. It's just not 100% there for me. In a perfect world, I would love to see a bunch of smaller bites rather than 2 big bites. I realize they wouldn't stay warm very long like that, but I just think it would be a better treat. I appreciate the effort BK, keep on trying!

Verdict?  Fun but imperfect

The Burger King Gingerbread Shake
A Short Story by Nick

Nick's Disclaimer: This is the overly dramatic version of my experience with Burger King’s Gingerbread Cookie Shake. Please enjoy because I surely didn't.

…and as I awoke from my sugar induced coma, I found myself on the cold pavement of Burger King’s parking lot. The air reeked of regret and the taste of artificial gingerbread lingered on my tongue. I knew I would not be proud of what had just occurred.

New Gingerbread failures from Burger King
Investigating the Gingerbread cookie sundae and shake

So the King is treating us to two new gingerbread flavored treats this year. I love the idea behind fast food chains mixing things up, but all too often we wind up with an epic fail.

This is the new BK Gingerbread Cookie Sundae, and despite my so-so relationship with ginger cookies, I felt obligated to try this one for you guys. I exchanged three bucks for this well covered treat.

Small BK Smoothies just a buck this weekend

I had to go grab something for work around lunch, so I grabbed lunch too.

Burger King is letting you try a small of their new smoothies for just a dollar this weekend. You may have already seen the tropical or strawberry banana flavors, but this one is actually the just released raspberry flavor.

Yes it's "fresh" but not fresh in the sense that they are blending up fresh raspberries for you. I'm guessing it's more like freshly poured from the container, or that the two base mixes have been "freshly" mixed together. It wasn't bad, and was basically what you would expect for a dollar. It's not going to be some ten dollar fresh fruit smoothie, or even the 4-5 dollar smoothie from your favorite lunch spot, it's just a no fat beverage to fruit up your lunch --- ha, just realized I cant even really call this a "chilly" beverage because I don't think any of the ingredients where frozen (well that or they melted real quick).

Ingredients: SMOOTHIE MIX, RASPBERRY: Sugar Syrup, Water, Concentrated Grape Juice, Concentrated Orange Juice, Concentrated Pear Juice, Apple Puree Concentrate, Raspberry Puree, Concentrated Raspberry Juice, Peach Puree Concentrate, Concentrated Apple Juice, Concentrated Black Currant Juice, Xanthan Gum, Pectin, Guar Gum, Cellulose Gum, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid.

Oh, and that's a tendergrill chicken sandwich if you really want to know. It was fairly tasty but it had so much mayo on it that the chicken literally slid out of the bun when I went to eat it.

Verdict?  Not bad, price is right this weekend

Some kind of Brownie Sundae from Burger King
A non-baconated treat review

You know, BK must be loving all the attention it got this week. I mean, the new bacon sundae was on NPR's morning edition for crying out loud. I then get out of my car, walk into work, and everyone is debating the merits of bacon and ice cream. We firmly had the usual two camps of "this is awesome" and "that's just crazy"... oh alright, I admit it was fun to hear a little ice cream banter at work.

Well...   I went to BK and all I got was some poorly made Brownie Sundae sans Bacon. I mean, I won't argue that it's pretty awesome looking with those brownies sticking out, but there was no site or sign of bacon-y goodness on the BK menu (and in their defense, I did not ask since I was in a terrible hurry). So, I settled on something that was new as of the end of last year. That's right, I sat there patiently waiting for my plain old boring sundae while a man on a giant rock in the middle of the pacific un-frighteningly enjoys his Bacon Sundae. That's not right... or something. I mean, I'm happy Marvo got one, but don't we all deserve bacon?

Actually I wouldn't be complaining had my sundae actually been made decently. Would it kill them to heat my brownie? And for that matter, it's called HOT fudge for a reason. I don't even know if I should call this one a "double brownie sundae" since there are two brownie chunks, or is this supposed to be the "Oreo brownie sundae" because I sure don't taste any Oreos.

Uggg, have I mentioned the hot fudge was real room temperature fudge? At that temp, it wasn't very tasty. It was strong but the flavor could have been much better. I want gooey sauce on my sundae, not thick and potent. (note: apparently BK never puts the hot in their hot fudge). The brownies were decent, neither spectacular nor awful. Somewhat heavy, not too gooey or oily, or to dry. I guess unremarkable would be the word.

This sundae really only had one thing going for it : it was HUGE! As the manager handed me the sundae I was shocked at how big it was. I realized that this would have been more than enough to fill me for lunch. It's gigantic and explains why it's over 500 calories.

Verdict?  I expected a lot more

Burger King Coke ICEE Float Review

Come on, you didn't really think I was going to go more than a few days without trying the other member of the BK ICEE float family did you? I had the perfect excuse to go for it yesterday, and I'm glad I did, it was a mere $1.29! That's less than drink from a gas station.

Now it's not as pretty as the cherry icee float I tried first because they were having a bit of trouble with the machine (it got jammed up). No matter, I knew it was all about that magical ratio of icee to shake/soft serve (I'm still not really sure which it is -- not that there is a huge difference). High Hopes here!

So I immediately tried to mix things up so I wouldn't waste any, but it's tough with just a straw. I messed around and had some success. Now I need to remind everyone that I'm not a huge coke float fan because I think it's more coke than float and that has never done a whole lot for me. That said, I enjoyed this combo. It's a nice mix of coke, fizz, and shake.

I only see two downsides here. 1) I'm not really sure this would quench my thirst.  2) Yet again, the last 25% was pretty boring as it was mostly icee.

Verdict?  nice
Buy Again?  definitely

Have you ever had a Burger King ICEE Float?
a.k.a. ICEEs on sale at BK!

While I was doing a little ice cream research one day, I found this April 2007 article titled "Burger King Offers Seasonal Desserts". A strange creation called an ICEE Float is mentioned. Funny, I don't go to BK much, but I certainly don't remember ever seeing an ICEE Float. I do a little digging and what do I find? Well, a 2002 BK commercial on youtube for a blue cherry "frozen float". So it's new to me since I've never seen it, yet it was "introduced" in 2007... yet it's technically available in 2002? I'm so confused!!! I searched and searched the internet for a review, but nothing!

An investigation must commence! To the scoopmobile!

I drove by one Burger King a week or two ago but no mention of the ICEE Float, and I didn't have the patience to wait through a long lunch line to ask for sure. I tried again today at a different BK and what do I see? ICEEs for just $1.00. Woohoo! Even if I don't score a float, at least I'm leaving with an ICEE. I drive around the corner and there it is sticking off the top of the menu board. ICEE Floats! Cherry or Coke. Small for $2.00 or a medium for $2.39. I place my medium cherry icee float order and I here "that'll be $1.70". Sweet, apparently ICEE Floats are on sale too!

Let's be honest with ourselves: this is a really nice looking treat. I really like this thin plastic cup that's filled to the top, it's almost a throw back to a thin sundae glass. I feel like I'm getting something special and different. To me, this screams treat. Sorry, I don't mean to be impressed by a piece of plastic, but working on your presentation skills is always a good thing.

Enough drooling, let's take a closer look. If you look at the red icee you notice it actually has a white sheen because the icee has blended with the base just a bit as it was poured in. Now important note here. I made the mistake of trying to drink a bit of ICEE off the top first and it did not hit me the right way. It tasted odd. It was an ICEE, but it wasn't. I can't describe it but I can tell you that I definitely didn't like it.

Thankfully I was only mildly detered and I went back at it, this time trying just the base. I'd say it's a nice vanilla soft serve, but it's too easy to sip through my straw, so it must be milkshake base --- Funny, I just went to the BK site to see if it was softserve or milkshake and I can't even find ICEE Floats on the website. Actually, it doesn't even say Cherry ICEE, it just says Frozen Cherry. Hmmmm, anyway, I like it, it's tasty and smooth.

Time to be bold and really dig in. I stir the treat and aim for the mix line. I take a few sips and I say hmmmmm. I take a few more sips and discover something... good. Mmmmm, it's like an easy to drink, mild cherry milkshake. It's cheezy to say, but we are getting the best of both worlds here. It started a little rough, but a bit of mixing and a bit of luck and this is an easy drinking treat. You know what my problem with this treat is? The magical shake/ICEE combo only lasts for a short time. This treat is so easy to drink that I drank it too quick! So it took me 20% percent to figure it out, the next 50% went quick, another 10% of waning flavor, and then the last 20% or so percent is weak (shake to ICEE ratio is way to low).

Overall I was sad to see this treat be done. I got the medium, but if there was a large, I would go for it... actually, I would be satisfied if the treat was a bit more shake and a little less ICEE so that the magical combo lasted a bit longer. Actually, in a perfect world, the two would be poured side by side so you get a perfect ratio throughout. I'm definitely going to give this another try, but I liked the cherry one so much, I'm almost afraid to try the coke version.

Verdict? Different! (in a good way!)
Buy Again? definitely

Oreo BK Sundae Shake

If it's ok, I'd like to start with a rant first - I hate fast food, I really do. I don't care how healthy they make it seem, deep down, it's either deep fried junk or grade E beef waste. Exaggerating? I don't think so. I spent about 18 months flipping grade E burgers, deep frying nuggets, and doing other unamusing tasks for a few bucks an hour. Since then, I do still visit other fast food chains, but the one where I worked? well, let's say I have more fingers than there are times that I have eaten there (and it's been awhile). Anyway, awhile back I started eating better, and in general, I try to avoid fast food. Sure I'm still a sucker for an Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich, and I would occasionally partake in a double stack cheeseburger from Wendy's, but overall, I was doing good.

Well schedules have been busy and we've been eating more junk again these last few months, but you know what, after Sunday, no more, no FRAKKIN' more! stop trying to kill me you evil little man!!! I realize what you are doing and I say "NO MORE!!!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
