Dunkin Donuts "New" Arnold Palmer Coolatta and the return of the Watermelon Coolatta

Let's get caught up with the summer selection of coolattas shall we? Rather then bringing back any of last year's coolattas, Dunkin Donuts has chosen instead to bring back a few older choices instead. Oreo returns from 2012, Watermelon returns from 2009/2010 and the Arnold Palmer appears to just be a rename of the frozen ice tea lemonade coolatta from a few years back.

Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter 'N Chocolate Ice Cream

[By Nick, New for 2014] So, I recently was able to finally try Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter World. While I agree with you guys on it being great, it only manages to break my top 5 for B&J's flavors. That said, I've had more and more cravings for the classic sweet and salty combo. Thankfully I have a free container of Baskin-Robbins to hopefully help satisfy those cravings. 2nd St. Creamery's Mint Chocolate Victory Ice Cream

[By Nick, 2nd St has closed up shop before the 2015 ice cream season] Along with Cannoli di Nonni, I also picked up 2nd Street Creamery's Mint Chocolate Victory. There's such a lack of mint flavors that aren't just plain old mint chocolate chip that I literally get irritated looking for a mint flavor to review. Thankfully 2nd Street wasn't complacent and decided to make a new mint option to try. Heck, the back story of this flavor is that they were trying to create the greatest mint chocolate flavor. Let's just see if they achieved that goal and indeed secured a victory.

Maple's Organics Sea Salt Almond Caramel Gelato

[By Nick] One of the major downfalls of living in the middle of nowhere is that Dubba is able to brag about the vast amount of brands he has access to. So when one of those companies offers to send me samples, I can't refuse that offer. Case in point: Maple's Organics. While Dubba hasn't covered them much, they have quite the selection of flavors I've been interested in. They sent me 4 free pints to review so let's start things off with their Sea Salt Almond Caramel.

First off, I love how more and more companies are using reusable, clear packaging. Not only does it make the product look more appealing, it makes me feel better knowing that I'd be able to repurpose the container after I'm done.

[For 2014 only] So, quick recap, four new gelato flavors from the very old and very well respected ice cream company known as Graeter's (out of Ohio). All four flavors come mixed with truffles. Nick's already posted the hazelnut review and our caramel and dark chocolate reviews will be coming out in the future. [yup, Graeter's was nice enough to send samples to both of us].

Chocolate Shoppe Espresso Oreo Ice Cream and Chocolate Shoppe Ultimate Oreo Ice Cream

[By Nick] If you thought I was all out of Chocolate Shoppe flavors to review, you'd be quite mistaken. Since they sent me 20 free pints, I still have a few flavors left to cover as well as a whole different line from them. So to move things along, let's make today's review a double post and look at both their Espresso Oreo and Ultimate Oreo flavors.

First up is Chocolate Shoppe Espresso Oreo ice cream. It’ll always surprise me why there aren’t any coffee flavored Oreos on the market. The combination works well in ice cream so it would only make sense to make an actual coffee version.

Taco Bell Dr. Pepper Vanilla Float Freeze

[New for 2014] First spied by an impulsive buy reader less then two weeks ago, the Taco Bell Freeze has already pushed the Mtn Dew Typhoon Freeze out of my local Massachusetts Taco Bell. Granted they have no signage up for it yet, but upon looking at the freeze machine, the brown substance was pretty obvious next to it's colorful brothers.

[New for 2014] I was talking to Perry's a few weeks back and they asked if I wanted to try their new 2014 flavors. See, they had just announced their new 2014 ice cream stand flavors, so I thought they were going to send samples of those like they did last year but instead they sent their three new flavors for the freezer aisle. Now I've already picked up their all natural dark chocolate ice cream and their very fun Otto's Cupcake from Wegman's, so that just leaves one new flavor to show you.

[By Nick] After my disappointing experience with The Fresh Market's Sweet & Spiced Gingerbread Gelato, The Fresh Market reached out to me. They  actually weren't too happy how that flavor turned out either. Not only did they offer to give me a gift card to refund my purchase, they also offered me a private tour after learning that a new store was opening not too far away from me in Saratoga Springs. Of course I can't say no to anything free and after only going to The Fresh Market once, I eagerly accepted the offer. I was a bit overwhelmed during my first visit so being able to learn more about the store and what they had to offer really intrigued me.

You guys know I spend way too much time on this breakfast sundae thing right? From baking pies and cakes to making gigantic sundaes that photograph better, I'm probably trying too hard. It's just that... well, see, I need a new hobby. When your childhood hobby becomes your full time job, then you need a new hobby. I'm jealous of people who can take good photographs and I'm even more jealous of people who do top notch food photography. So, in my never ending quest for the perfect sundae, both in tastes and visuals, I'm always looking for new pieces to the puzzle.

[New for 2014, Exclusive to Target] So who wants to hear me butcher the word "Flan" and several other words that I should have mastered long, long ago? That's right, I spoke with Dennis of the DHAP Show to talk about some of the highlights for the 2014 ice cream season. Hershey's Roadrunner Raspberry Ice Cream

[By Nick] To say I was excited when I saw the selection of Hershey's Ice Cream at the Niskayuna Co-Op would be an understatement. You see, we've been meaning to get them on the site for a while now. However, I've only been able to find them in gas stations and you all know my luck with ice cream from there. ‎Now, Hershey's Ice Cream has absolutely no connection to the Hershey's company you're all familiar with. The only thing they have in common is their name and location. I actually got to meet the regional sales manager for Hershey's on a more recent trip to the Co-op and learned a lot about the flavor creation process and more about Hershey's history.

If you know me, you know I spend countless hours looking at companies' websites looking at what flavors they offer even if I know I can't get that flavor locally. So imagine my surprise when I saw Roadrunner Raspberry in the Co-op's freezer. After doing some research when I got home, it was actually one of the hand-dipped flavors that recently got packaged into pints. Described as "Premium white chocolate ice cream with raspberry swirls and raspberry filled chocolate cups." That sounds a heck of a lot like my beloved White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle from Haagen-Dazs. There was no way I was passing up grabbing this flavor so let's dig right into this one.

[New for 2014] Friendly's treat line up has basically doubled since last year, and many of those first run treats now have many variations to choose from. Last year's black raspberry bar and vanilla bar now have many friends in the form of coffee, mint, coconut and black cherry (as well as two dual flavors that we'll cover in a future post). This is going to be a quick review since I devoured it in about 90 seconds.

That's not all though! Today is a special Monday because it marks my two year anniversary for writing for this glorious website. To think it's already been two years is mind blowing. Do I get my honorary diabetes membership card yet? Like last year, I'd like to thank you all for your continued support and all of the friends I've made along the way. Since it is my two year anniversary, I’d say Perry's Birthday Bash ice cream is the perfect flavor to celebrate the occasion. This is actually my first time trying Perry’s ice cream so why not break into it with something celebratory?

[New for 2014] While most ice cream companies tout their new flavors, grocery stores tend to just throw their stuff on the shelves and see if you notice. Case in point is five new super premium flavors from Stop & Shop (Giant) grocery store . They make for a cheap lunch at 2 for $5 (on sale, usually 2 for $6), so my only real problem was deciding between the toffee crunch flavor and this:

Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey Ice Cream

[By Nick] This I unusual for me because I don’t normally crave banana flavored products. Lately though, I’ve been wanting them more and more. Seeing as I’m still on my mission to review every Ben & Jerry’s product available, I decided to revisit one of their best sellers: Chunky Monkey. Before trying Stewart’s Monkey Business, this was my go to for banana cravings. That said, it’s been years since I’ve had it so who knows if my taste buds or their formula has changed.

Quick Note: Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream has recently received the new fair trade packaging update but the ingredients and nutritional info have remained the same.

State of the Freezer Address The 6th anniversary edition

6 years my friends, 6 long years of covering over 1000 varieties of ice cream, froyo, gelato, and whatever else we can get our little frozen hands on... I must be crazy... nay, I know I'm crazy, crazy for ice cream! Ha, what started as a pipe dream and a cranky blizzard review has lasted longer than.... iunno, alot of things, like most shows on television nowadays.

Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge Ice Cream

[By Nick, new for 2014] Seeing as I already reviewed and enjoyed their Jamoca bar, I think the best way to break into Baskin-Robbins new faux-pints would be their Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream. Jamoca Almond Fudge is one of Baskin-Robbins signature flavors if I remember correctly and the packaged version sounds like a close replica of the in-store ice cream.

Weight Watchers Ice Cream Cups Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Mint Chocolate Chip

["New" for 2014] Alright, Weight Watchers has two "new" ice cream cups for us this year, though new refers to the serving itself rather than a new flavor or product type. See, while I tried their 4 PointsPlus chocolate brownie ice cream cup three years ago, these new servings are just 3 PointsPlus but basically that just means that they've shrunk the cups from about 100g down to 67g (I don't know if they've done any additional food science to these). Disclaimer: Weight Watchers isn't really my thing, but Wells offered up the free samples, so here goes nothing.

Walmart Sea Salt Caramel Truffle ice cream

[By Nick, New for 2014] After my less than stellar experience with Ben & Jerry's Salted Caramel Core, I was ready to swear off all salted caramel treats for the rest of the year. However, while wandering through the abyss of Wal-Mart, I noticed that they had a new Sea Salt Caramel Truffle ice cream. I've never had their ice cream before but I knew I had to be the one to review it and document the end of an era. I mean when Wal-Mart catches on to a trend, which must mean it's about run its course. We can only hope that red velvet will be next.

Wal-Mart doesn’t do a great job with descriptions. The container just says "with sea salt caramel swirl and truffle candy pieces". Based on the color, I’m just going to go with the obvious guess and say it’s some sort of a caramel base.

Dairy Queen Strawberry Shortcake Blizzard May 2014 Blizzard of the Month

[New for 2014] Now, you would think that a Strawberry Shortcake blizzard would be a regular menu item, not something "new" for 2014. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I've enjoyed pretty much every strawberry blizzard I've ever had. I just love the way their sweet strawberry sauce blends with their vanilla softserve. It just tastes so fresh and enjoyable. Let's keep this streak alive because it's time to have a blizzard for lunch!
