Cadbury Cream Egg Sweet Cream Cupcake Recipe
Crackin' Open the Oven : Easter Preparation Edition

When the fog in my brain isn't too thick, I tend to get random wacky ideas in my head. Most are forgotten within five minutes, but others, like a Cadbury inspired cupcake, manage to stick around long enough for me to jot it down somewhere. I did a quick pinterest search and sure enough I'm not the first one to think about shoving a big ol' cadbury cream egg inside a cupcake... the thing is, I've got two sticking points in my head. One, the big eggs seem to take up an awful lot of the cupcake. Two (and more importantly), why is everyone doing chocolate on chocolate here? What makes an Cadbury Cream Egg different is the filling, so why not base the cupcake on something different? TO THE INTERNET!

I do a another quick pinterest search for sweet cream cupcakes, but nothing really shows up. Hmmmm, how odd, I'm surprised I cant buy a sweet cream cake mix, let alone find one on pinterest. Off to google then... wow, only a few meaningful hits, including this recipe from Erik Homemade. Well, I guess we're going with that recipe and then adding my own special Dubba branded ideas. Ok, ready everyone?

Cadbury Cream Egg Sweet Cream Cupcake Recipe
from Erik Homemade
  4 eggs
  1 1/2 tspn vanilla
1 1/2 cups heavy (whipping) cream
  1 1/2 cups sugar
1 2/3 cups all purpose flour
  3 tspns baking powder
  1 tspn salt

and the Dubba additions
2 packs of FROZEN mini Cadbury eggs
1 can of milk chocolate frosting
1 large hershey's milk chocolate bar

I pretty much followed E.H.'s directions by beating the eggs, adding the vanilla, and then adding the heavy cream (a first for me in any kind of cake recipe). Next up are all the dry ingredients. Add the sugar, salt, flour, and baking powder and then you are done. It only took me two minutes (yeah right!)

Bakers note: at first I thought the mixture was a bit thin, but as soon as I started pouring it, it turned out to be a little too thick. Something needs adjusting, not sure what.

Here are the cupcakes in prep. I decided to get overly creative and tried to add a yellow "yolk" to the cupcakes. My daughter thought I was adding some flavor, but it's just food coloring.

Whoopsy, the yellow seems to have gone everywhere. Let's cut them open to see how they are doing.

As you can see, on went the milk chocolate frosting and then I rolled the edges in some semi-crushed Hershey bar (I know, I should have broken out the blender for the edging). The great thing about this view is that the particular cupcake I cut open was a near perfect specimen. Notice there's just a bit of cake underneath the egg which is what you want. Now let's take a frustrating look at how some of the others turned out...

To add a little bit of cookie science to the whole cupcake event, I decided to do a little refrigeration experiment. In the red trunks (left side), we have the warmed eggs. In the purple trunks (right side), we have the refrigerated eggs... and that made absolutely no difference of how the Cadbury eggs melted. Apparently using the freezer would have been the smartest choice. Uggg, live and learn. The worst part is that the Cadbury chocolate has merged with the bottom of the cupcake to form some odd plastic like substance --- See, in the red wrappers, I put the egg in first and they melted a bit while I prepped the mix. For the purple ones, I poured in the mix and then added the chilled eggs. Thing is, I think I may have pushed some eggs further down than others. It's a rookie mistake and I'm still kicking myself for it.

Ok, so ends this weeks cupcake journey. I'm pretty bummed these didnt turn out better, in fact, my daughter actually preferred them without frosting. Oh well, I'll get some ice cream reviews up tomorrow (the next post has got pictures, now it just needs the words)

On Second Scoop: Now that I've had a few days to reflect (and sample), I think a sweet cream frosting (but keeping the chocolate bar crumble) would be a better fit for this one. You don't need to be blown away with milk chocolate frosting, instead I'd much prefer a quality sweet icing on top.

Ben & Jerry's Blueberry Vanilla Graham
A Greek Frozen Yogurt Review

[New for 2012, discontinued] Have you been patiently waiting for my next Ben & Jerry's Greek froyo review? Well....  it's not going to be worth the wait because it didn't go the way we all had planned. I will admit that it was more tolerable than my initial encounter with the Raspberry Fudge Chunk variety, but at this point, consider this the last B&J Greek Froyo review.

So here is my new acquaintance (you know I always say friend, but this is no friend of mine). Blueberry Vanilla Graham is Blueberry and Vanilla Greek Frozen Yogurts with a Graham Cracker Swirl. Only one of those words frightens me and even one of my favorite words (Graham) can't save the day.

York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream Bars
A Treat Review

[Appear to have been discontinued to make room for 2015's thin mint version]
One of the neatest looking new 2012 products has to be the York Peppermint Patty Ice Cream bar. A York is a straight forward (and tasty) treat that should translate well to ice cream... ok, no suspense today. This treat does translate pretty well, but let's dig into why this is a good treat and not a great treat.

The new 3oz York Peppermint Patty Ice Cream bars are peppermint light ice cream dipped in a dark chocolate flavored coating. This box of six only set me back $3.28 at Walmart.

On Location at ShotCakes

How's everybody doing on this fine Friday? Do you know what you are doing this weekend? I'm not sure yet, but I know what I did last weekend. Sure, the very early (and cheesy) plan was to hit up DQ for something green on St. Paddy's day, but then we decided to take things up a notch. You see, we headed to the toy train show up in Wilmington, skipped lunch, and stopped at a neat little place on the way home.

This is ShotCakes : ice cream cupcakes. I will admit that shotcakes will probably make you think shots, but there's no adult beverages here. There's just ice cream and cupcakes, lots and lots of cupcakes!

Turkey Hill Stuff'd Junior Mint
A Frozen Dairy Dessert Review

[Discontinued before 2015] Have I ever mentioned how nice the Turkey Hill people are? They wrote to me several times and apologized when I don't like a flavor. It's so polite and truly embodies the spirit of how ice cream is here to make us feel better. That said, I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is that this is crazy low fat and tastes like junior mints.
The bad news is that it also has that Stuff'd funk that I truly dislike.
. . .
The best news is that I can totally pawn this one off on my daughter who's really enjoying it

Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Therapy Ice Cream

Now Chocolate Therapy once existed as a single serve container, and technically I've already tried Chocolate Therapy from a scoop shop, so let me jump right to my conclusion on the new pint sized variety: This is going to be the chocolate pint to beat in 2012. It's just that chocolaty. I think it's only fair to warn you that if you are a chocolate addict like myself, it's going to be really hard to put this pint down. For everyone that misses the limited edition Flourless Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Therapy is here to permanently take it's place.

Chocolate Therapy is Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolate Cookies & Swirls of Chocolate Pudding Ice Cream. Think about that for a minute (or 7). Close your eyes and envision what that would taste like. I don't even need to crack open the pint to show you because your mind is already racing with chocolate on chocolate on chocolate goodness. I see chocolate houses with brownie bushes and pudding rain drops and NOM NOM NOM NOM. Man this stuff is evil... why did they ever cancel this flavor?

Topping of the Week: BACON

Between the limited edition Freezer Burns Bacon Blizzard, the Jack-in-the-Box Bacon Shake, and the Maple Bacon Sundae from Denny's, do you ever get the feeling you are missing something? Don't get me wrong, I adore bacon. I've had more than my fair share of short stacks with a side of bacon as a kid, but it all just seems so weird. I'm old school and not very adventurous, so I am fearful.

This is some tasty Applegate Natural Sunday Bacon.
(yes, I know it's Monday)

And this is a spoonful of crazy...

or was it?

To my pleasant surprise, it didn't taste bad at all. In fact, despite the ratio you see on my spoon, all I really tasted was the tasty chocolate ice cream with a bit of a funky texture to it. I only did this for two bites, but now I understand all those comments about needing a lot of bacon in your sundae. My only suggestion for next time is to make the bacon crunchier to see how that goes.

Moral of the story : don't be afraid

Graeter's Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Review

Man I hate daylight savings time. I know I said it yesterday too, but now that it's in effect I am not amused... or fully conscious for that matter... if only I had a chocolate kick to get me going.

Ok, this should do it. Graeter's IRRESISTABLE Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. After the way yesterday's review went, I need to try a sample of this to see how it tastes (so what if I already had a second scoop of the black raspberry this morning)

Graeter's Black Raspberry Chip Ice Cream Review

So, how y'all doin' today? Are you ready for the time change? If there's one thing I've noticed, it's that the older I get, the more I hate this foolish time change. Sure on occasion it might correct one of my kid's sleeping schedules, but overall, it's nothing but trouble. I'm tired just thinking about it.... if only I had something to cheer me up...

You know, I bet a little live blogging would help. That's right, it's time to dig into "the world's most irresistible ice cream", also know as Graeter's. Since 1870.... yeah, 1870, like 142 years ago 1870, Graeter's has been making small batch ice cream and I can't believe I finally got my hands on some. To be honest, I'm not sure how you go nationwide while still making french pot ice cream two gallons at a time... ahhh, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier, Graeter's expanded by building a new plant in Bond Hill in 2009 with every intention of going national. Well with the ability to make a million gallons a year, let me be the first to say "Welcome to New England!"

You know, I'm trying to be good and set up this review, but I really want some ice cream RIGHT NOW.

Perry's Wildberry Gelato Review

I can't believe I actually waited all day for my frozen treat. Mmmmm, 8 o'clock means tivo and and a big scoop of something. What should we have? ...just kidding, I've had my eye on this all day.

A pint of Perry's All Natural, Italian Style Wildberry Gelato from Wegman's.
I hope it's as tasty as the Cannoli flavor.
