Chime in on.... Skinny Cow Pints

Ok, time for you, the reader, to chime in on.... Skinny Cow low fat ice cream pints. These were first spotted way back in August (of 2017) but I just spied them today, sitting on a Haagen-Dazs shelf of all places. Since Stevia isn't really my thing, I'm opening the floor up to hear what you think.

Skinny Cow low fat ice cream pints
Why do these pints always seem to have a spoon drawing on them?

There are seven 14oz flavors in all:

Oh My! Vanilla Bean - vanilla low fat ice cream
Fudgetastic Java - coffee low fat ice cream with fudge swirls
Mint Chip Mashup - mint low fat ice cream with chocolate chips
Oh Fudge Cookie - vanilla low fat ice cream with C&C and fudge swirls
Peanut Butter Chocolate - light chocolate ice cream with peanut butter swirls
Chocolate Cake Me Away - light chocolate ice cream with chocolate frosting swirls
Rock On! Rocky Road - light chocolate ice cream with almonds & marshmallows

When I picked up that top right pint to spin it around to show nutrition info, I was shocked out how light it was. I do realize that these low sugar, high protein pints are a good amount of air, but the pint felt practically empty.

So, have you seen these? and if so, have you tried them? which ones? how would you rank them? I got a couple of positive comments on instagram so maybe you've had a similar experience.

Skinny Cow Ultimate Chocolate Sandwich

[New for 2016] First, a quick announcement aka bad news. I'm not sure if I can pull off posts every other day anymore, there's just not enough going on. I will do my best, but if you see me slip to three days here and there, that's why. It's part logistics, part availability, part monetary. I just wanted to warn everyone ahead of time so that I feel a little less guilty when it actually happens. That said, let's dig in to Skinny Cow's new line up of "fully dipped sandwiches". We've got creamy caramel, vanilla bean dream, and....

Skinny Cow Double Caramel Swirl Bars

[New for early 2015] So Nick and I have already spied a few new skinny cow treats, but we were more interested in trying Talenti or B&J or H-D.... but let's see if we can't lighten things up a bit and try one of their new treats.

Skinny Cow Chocolate Mint Ganache
Low Fat Ice Cream Cones

And the very first new treat of 2014 is....

Ganache cones made with low fat ice cream (click for larger image)

Skinny Cow Chocolate Ganache low fat ice cream cones! 4 cones to a box, 3.85 fluid ounces each, and they come in mint or mousse variations (and set me back four bucks at Wal-mart). To be honest, the description has me a little puzzled, but the mint version has a chocolate cone, so those came home with me first.

Trying Skinny Cow Ice Cream Candy Bars
for National Ice Cream Day

Ah, the 29th National Ice Cream Day is upon us! To be honest, I wasn't sure how to celebrate until I got an email from Nestle saying that they would like to sponsor a post today featuring some of their new 2013 products. I couldn't resist, so I looked over the list and picked out the new Skinny Cow ice cream candy bars to try.

So I've got high hopes for the Skinny Cow Salted Caramel Pretzel Ice Cream Candy Bars – Vanilla low-fat ice cream topped with a layer of salty caramel and small pieces of pretzels all covered in a chocolatey coating. 5 in a box, 2.1 fluid ounces each.

And we've got the interesting Skinny Cow Cookies ‘n Dough Ice Cream Candy Bars – Vanilla low-fat ice cream topped with a cookie dough layer and crunchy cookie bites with a smooth chocolatey covering. [These were discontinued sometime before 2017]

Skinny Cow Chocolate Covered Cherry Cones

[By Nick, Limited Edition for 2013] At the beginning of the year, Dubba and I made predictions for what this year would be like in the ice cream world. My prediction was that there would be more fruity flavors. Well Skinny Cow is here to support my prediction with their new limited edition Chocolate Covered Cherry Cones.

I have to commend Skinny Cow for venturing into the severely neglected cherry ice cream novelty market. Besides the Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia bar, no other product seems to come to mind. Coming from a cherry lover, that is just a complete injustice. Strawberry has had its turn to rule long enough! It’s time for a revolution, a very red revolution... Settle down Nick, you have ice cream to review.

This year they decided to ditch the whole “slimited” branding in favor of plain old limited branding. I thought slimited was actually a brilliant marketing point while Dubba thought it was a joke. Also, unlike last year’s Mmmmocha truffle bars, there’s nothing demasculinizing on the box this time. Really the only thing of note on the box is that there’s a cute little ice cream cone upc code. I’m not sure if this is on all of their packages but I thought it was a unique touch.

Skinny Cow Snickerdoodle Sandwiches
A Low Fat Treat Review

[New/Limited for 2013, Full time in 2015] So deep down I'm always looking to fill the void created my beloved blue bunny sedona sandwiches. Could this surprise limited edition flavor from Skinny Cow do it? It's rare to see an oatmeal wafer, and then they are mixing it with a cinnamon light ice cream? Sure it's low fat, but I gotta say, I'm excited.

Skinny Cow White Mint Cookie Shake-Stir Review

[By Nick, 2012 only] After my positive experience with BH’s mix of mint and cookies and cream ice cream, I thought it was about time to give a national brand’s rendition a try. Looking through the freezer section my selection was pretty limited but I did manage to spot the new for 2012 limited slimited edition shake from Skinny Cow. Dubba took a look at the other variety early last year, so it felt might that I should cover the mint version.

The White Mint Cookie Shake-Stir is described as “Low-fat mint ice cream mixed with chocolatey cookie crumbles” and so seems pretty straight forward. It is called white mint so I do enjoy the fact it’s not the green color that you’d associate with mint ice cream. There’s just something about green ice cream that bugs me every now and again (yes I’m talking about you pistachio).

Skinny Cow Slimited Edition Mmmmocha Truffle
A low fat ice cream treat review

[By Nick, 2012 only] Ever since my experience with Gelati-Da, I’ve had a serious craving for coffee ice cream. I had originally set out to find Blue Bunny’s Cup o’ Coffee Cake but to my disappointment they were all sold out. Feeling defeated, I went to exit the ice cream isle when out of nowhere the word new caught my eye. Skinny Cow Slimited Edition Mmmmocha truffle bars? Being a fan of puns and enjoying other truffle bars, I knew I had to pick these up.

It looks like Skinny Cow’s marketing department took some classes from the Ben & Jerry’s folks. Slimited is almost ingenious while Mmmmocha seems to be a stretch to me. I would’ve gone with Mooocha but that’s just my humble opinion. Though the inclusion of a coffee bean for the ‘o’ is pretty clever in itself.

Skinny Cow Strawberry Cheesecake
A Low Fat Ice Cream Review

[By Nick, discontinued before 2013 season] I will never understand why cheesecake has such a following. I mean come on, it’s an okay dessert but definitely not something that deserves a restaurant devoted to it. I guess I just don’t appreciate cheese in my desserts. I’ve never liked cannolis, which being Italian is practically considered sacrilegious, and tiramisu has never done it for me either. Putting my bias aside, I saw this little single serve container of Skinny Cow Strawberry Cheesecake and thought “what the heck?” and decided to give it a shot.

I’ve only tried one kind of cheesecake ice cream in the past. Walgreens makes a store brand strawberry cheesecake and I’ll admit that I found it to be pretty good. Hopefully Skinny Cow will continue my positive run into the cheesy ice cream world.

This cup is definitely a winner and a failure.

Skinny Cow Double Chocolate Crumble Shake-Stir
A Slimited Edition Frozen Drink Review

[For 2012 only] Let's start this review off honestly - Look, we all know I don't like skinny cow. Besides mini fudge pops, I pretty much despise all of their products. I know alot of you like them but it is what it is. I'm spoiled, I accept that, but when I saw these in the store, I still couldn't help but want to try them.

Behold, one of Skinny Cow's new Slimited Edition products. On one hand, slimited is a catchy term. On the other hand, I hate made up words.... geez, am I cranky today or something? Anyway, this is the new Slimited Edition Skinny Cow Double Chocolate Crumble Shake-Stirs. Yeah, another made up word. Shake-stir? Pretty sure James Bond would have a problem with that term (I'd make a bi-polar joke, but those are never funny).

Friday Night Fight : Cookies 'n Cream Showdown

Let's get ready to rumble! In fact, let's take 4 or 5 weeks to prep... sorry, this has been my Friday project since mid-May, but no more stalling! Time for Blue Bunny and Skinny Cow to have a match up. To make it fair, we're going to compare their reduced fat ice cream cookies n' cream bars. As a disclaimer, technically these were both free, though the skinny cow coupon was technically a replacement coupon for a prior bad experience.

Round 1 : Marketing

So you walk into a store and see these two side by side, which do you buy?

You know I've seen this drizzled ( latticed (ribbed)) treat for awhile now, but I've always been afraid to try it, mainly because I was terribly unimpressed by Skinny Cow Fudge Bars. However, this is Cookies 'n Cream so it's harder to mess up... plus my coupon was about to expire, so I finally pulled the trigger and picked up the NEW! Cookies 'n Cream Truffle. It's Chocolatey ribbons drizzled on cookies 'n cream low fat ice cream. Seems straight forward enough. This 2.65oz treat packs just 110 calories with only 25 of them from fat. (These have been discontinued before 2017)

Now this is Blue Bunny's NEW! Cookies 'n Cream ice cream bar and already this is more of what I expect. It's cookies 'n cream reduced fat ice cream with chocolate cookie crunch topping. These are 3 oz bars with 190 calories, 80 of which come from fat.

Hmmm, tough to call outside the box... HA, I meant that figuratively at first. Anyway, I think skinny cow does a good job of catching the diet crowd with the chocolate drizzle. However, I think blue bunny is going to grab the average joe with the nice looking cookie crunch layer. I'm going to call this round a draw.

Skinny Cow Cookies N' Cream Ice Cream Review

[New for 2010, discontinued before 2013 season] I decided to go low fat today, I mean, come on, at 3% fat, 5% sat fat and just 150 calories, there is near zero guilt on a treat like this.... but I guess I should ask, will there be any pleasure since it didn't go so well last time?

Friday Night Fight
Klondike Peanut Butter Chocolate ICS
vs Skinny Cow Chocolate Peanut Butter ICS

It was a few days ago when I realized I had a set of 4 ounce treats just waiting to win over the hearts and minds of the friday night fight fans.

The Contenders

Klondike Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich
Note: This fighter was new for 2010 but retired before 2013
As I mentioned two months ago, Klondike has taken over the old Breyers ice cream sandwich line to make room for the new Breyers Smooth & Dreamy ice cream sandwiches. This includes the old Oreo and Mrs. Fields sandwiches, but they also added the new Peanut Butter Chocolate sandwiches.

We have Peanut Butter flavored light ice cream  with a peanut butter and chocolate flavored swirl and chocolate chips between two chocolate wafers. Sounds tasty. This new bad boy on the block weighs in at 73g (4 fluid ounces)

Skinny Cow Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich
Note: This fighter retired sometime before 2017
In my quest to someday figure out which low fat skinny cow treat is the best, I picked up the Skinny Cow Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream sandwiches on sale awhile back.

The description on the website is chocolate and peanut butter low fat ice creams swirled together and smushed between two big chocolatey wafers. Sounds straightforward enough. This sandwich clocks in at a very similar 71g (4 fluid ounces)

Round 1 : Packaging

Wow, not only do they weigh the same, but their packaging definitely shares a similar theme. Funny how orange means peanut butter. Since there's nothing really seperating these two, I'm going to have to give this round to Klondike for adding those funky sparkly metallic streaks to the mountain tops (notice the top of the packaging and how it's all different colors depending on the angle).

Skinny Cow Fudge Bars

My reserve of skinny cow fudge pops has long since been depleted (probably from eating them 2 at a time), but thankfully they were on sale. As I went to grab the box, I noticed Skinny Cow fudge bars were also on sale. Assuming a fudge bar was basically a giant fudge pop, I decided that now seemed like a good time them.

There are six in a box

Skinny Cow Low Fat Cookies 'N Cream Ice Cream Sandwiches

I think it's pretty obvious that I'm not a huge Skinny Cow fan unless we're talking about their simple yet satisfying fudge pops. However, no matter how good Ben & Jerry's might taste, you really can't eat it every night (unless you're still 18). So, when I saw the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches under going a considerable sale, I knew it was time to give a few more flavors a try.

The first one I opened is the Cookie N' Cream variety of their low fat

New! Skinny Cone Caramel Cone Low Fat Ice Cream

[Discontinued] So, when I posted the pictures of the brand new skinny cow single serve cups, what was your reaction? If you are anything like me, you were probably ...a little ...afraid. Sorry, but from my experience, skinny cow ice cream isn't the most positive experience. Sure, I love the mini fudge pops, but the faux "ice cream" they use in their sandwiches and cones rarely steps outside the edible range.

I reported 4 new flavors and being a lover of crunchy cones, I went with the Caramel Cone. Now one strange thing right off the bat is the fact that there is no description of the ice cream on the container. Yes it has a picture and a name, but nothing like "vanilla low fat ice cream with a low sugar caramel swirl and cone bits covered in low fat chocolaty stuff".

Spring is in the air! Time for new 2010 products!!

The Shaws by my work had themselves quite a busy weekend, I can't believe how many new products I saw!! Good thing I had my camera phone (though please excuse my picture taking, I was trying to be somewhat discrete as I took multiple pictures). Not to be overly addicted to ice cream, but I think I'm just a smidge immensely giddy with the thought of new products to test.

I saw these first at the end of the aisle, 3 new Fruit Bars from Edy's: Pineapple Fruit Bars, and then two antioxidant flavors, Pomegranate and Acai Blueberry. Those flavors sounded familiar, and then I remembered why. $4.99 gets you six bars. The best part here is the Communities Take Root program which will donate fruit orchards to 25 deserving communities this summer.

Strawberry Shortcake Showdown
Good Humor vs. Skinny Cow

I don't know if this is a fair competition, but considering I ate and then forgot to review the Good Humor product labeled "Strawberry Shortcake", I decided to do a head to head after trying a Skinny Cow "Strawberry Shortcake" last night (ok, technically I had two, one before bed and another one as a midnight snack)

Presentation
There are two parts to presentation: advertised and actual.

Advertised: As you can see, they both look pretty tasty, though if you were going for authentic strawberry shortcake taste, you'd probably be tempted to go with the Good Humor bars. GH also has the advantage of being on a stick, so you might assume it's a less messy treat.

Treat? of the week:
Skinny Cow Vanilla with Caramel
Low Fat Ice Cream Cone

Well....at least the cone is crunchy...

...and...technically...the caramel does cover the (lack of) taste of the vanilla for the first few bites

but those are my only positive thoughts. What we have is a crunchy cone filled with bright white fluffy 'stuff' that is cold like ice cream but will satisfy very little of your craving for ice cream. It's a shame really. Skinny Cow is owned by Nestle, and it sure seems like they are using Drumstick technology to create a crunchy cone, but why waste this effort on such a flavorless filling. Seriously, it's not like vanilla flavor adds calories, and they aren't even using real vanilla, so you can't blame it on cost either. I guess I just don't get it, what's the point?

On Second Scoop: Yeah, I definitely won't buy these boring things again. The only excitement I found was that the last one had an oversized lump of chocolate in the bottom of the cone - tasted like a chocolate chip cookie.
