Steve's Papua New Guinea Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

[New for 2020] Steve's has been trying to get my attention for the last several months with this bright orange colored pint. I stare at it every time, then remember it's just vanilla, and move on.... but now I'm desperate to try something new.... ok Steve's, fine, you win.

Steve's Ice Cream Returns

[Returning from the Brink] So, there hasn't been a review of Steve's on the blog since 2015. While we do have 11 reviews here, I technically wrote just one of them and added a footnote to another because Nick's local selection was way better than the four flavors I could find around me. I say that because it's not that we wanted to stop reviewing Steve's, it's that they filed for bankruptcy in February 2017. They were scooped up by Dean Foods for a mere million bucks which seems like a steal but what do I know. (Remember that Dean Foods owns a bunch of ice cream brands including Friendly's).

Steve's Manhattan Cherry Chip Ice Cream

[By Nick] Oh how I love Manhattan. The city was my second home earlier this year and I miss it very much. Let's see if this new flavor from Steve's can bring back some of those fond memories.

Steve's Blackberry Crumble Ice Cream

[By Nick] Some people consider Steve's as a carbon copy of Jeni's. I can't disagree with them there. The original Steve's packaging is similar, flavors are close and methods for sourcing ingredients are reminiscent of Jeni's as well. The only difference I really see is that Steve's charges a lot less for their products and I've rarely have been let down by a flavor. With Jeni's still not in markets, Steve's has another Jeni's-esque flavor out. You remember Jeni's Brambleberry Crisp? Well, meet Steve's version.

Steve's Whoopie Pies & Sweet Cream Ice Cream #48

So, I finally found Steve's ice cream at Wegman's of all places. They only had four flavors, and one of them involved banana, so I decided to bring home just two flavors. I figured I would first do a practice run with their blackout cake flavor, and then once I was ready, it was time to delve in to...

Nick at the Summer Fancy Food Show : Part 2

[By Nick] Are you all done reading part 1 of my Summer Fancy Food Show experience? Good, now it's time for part two. All these brands were on the bottom floor of the convention. This part of the show was based on states throughout the country with some foreign companies towards the back like our friends up north, Canada.

Steve's Speculoos Cookie Butter
Dairy-Free Frozen Dessert

[By Nick] Tomorrow I'll be making my way down to NYC and the Javits Center for the Summer Fancy Food Show. Be sure to follow me on twitter and instagram for posts and updates throughout the day. Seeing as Dubba already covered one of the sofi award finalist products, it's fitting that I cover another one of them.

Gelato Fiasco Sriracha Peanut Gelato and
Steve's Thai Peanut Butter Pretzel Ice Cream

[By Nick, Both New for 2015] One of my predictions for the year was that we'd see some spicier flavors on the market from the smaller companies. While I was expecting the trendy chocolate and chili combo, I didn't expect to see sriracha and peanuts being the next trend. And not within a week of each other did I receive both Steve's and The Gelato Fiasco's sriracha infused flavors. I'm going to call this the....

Steve's Sweet Corn & Blackberry Preserves Ice Cream

[By Nick] Okay, you guys stuck with me for the Balsalmic Fig and Marscapone ice cream from Coolhaus. Now I ask for you to keep an open mind again. I received this pint from my tour of Whole Foods awhile back and mainly decided to grab it because how unique/scary it sounded.

Steve's Brooklyn Blackout Cake Ice Cream #32

[By Nick] With only two flavors left from my free shipment of Steve's ice cream, I decided to go with something we’ve yet to see: Chocolate. And boy does it sound like they brought it in...

To be honest, this sounds like a more sophisticated version of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy. Just exchange the pudding ice cream for swirls of dark chocolate pudding and the chocolate cookies for chocolate stout cake pieces from the NYC bakery ovenly.

Steve's Strawberry Ricotta Ice Cream #31

[By Nick] If Steve’s Sunday Morning ice cream was the flavor I was most excited to try, their Strawberry Ricotta had me least excited when I first looked over the free samples they sent.

It’s well documented that while I don’t hate cheesy desserts, I don’t see the appeal or hype behind them. Also, the application of ricotta in a dessert is something my mind doesn’t grasp so easily. When I think of ricotta, I think of all of the great Italian food I grew up on. Never in my life have I heard of it used in a dessert though. I’m sure it’s just my ignorance of cheesy desserts but it feels so out of place to me. That said, after having Sunday Morning, I have all of the faith in the world in Steve’s to make this flavor combination work.

Steve's Sunday Morning Ice Cream #25

[By Nick] After my underwhelming experience with Steve’s Salty Caramel ice cream, I thought it would be best to try the free sample I was most excited about: Sunday Morning.

With a description of “Buttered Maple Syrup Ice Cream with Crispy Waffle Pieces” there’s no way I couldn’t be excited. If you don’t know, Dubba and I are quite the advocates for ice cream for breakfast and Steve’s has gone and made a flavor perfect for such an occasion. And come on, when’s the last time you saw waffle pieces in ice cream that weren’t cones? Exactly, never. If you can’t tell, I’m very excited for this flavor and my expectations are extremely high. Please don’t let me down Steve’s!

Steve’s Salty Caramel Ice Cream #34

[By Nick] I must have been good this year because I received an early Christmas present from the folks over at Steve’s Ice Cream (founded 1973). For those who don’t know, Steve’s is basically the New York version of Jeni’s with the price tag to boot. Steve’s is all about making small batch ice cream with only the highest of quality of ingredients. They also source ingredients from local artisans such as Pies & Thighs to make their ice cream a true representation of the City in which it was crafted. I truly enjoy companies like this. It’s all about the ice cream for them and they take such pride in what they produce. It’s quite remarkable as well as respectable if you ask me.

Now seeing as everyone has been putting out a salted caramel product as of late, let’s start with the free sample of Steve’s Salty Caramel ice cream. It's "Sweet Caramel Ice Cream Rounded Out by a Savory, Sea Salted Caramel Swirl".
