Haagen-Dazs Coconut Caramel Chocolate Trio

[2018-2020] Of the new Haagen-Dazs products coming out in 2018, I was having trouble deciding if I was more excited for the cookie squares or the three new Trio flavors. I know some of you were a little underwhelmed by the first four Trio flavors, but they've gone ahead an added a fourth component in the form of a swirl. Let's see what it does.

There's that familiar swirl we saw last year.

And here are all the layers!

Now unfortunately coconut is not my thing so the first bite was a little shocking to me. Why did I buy coconut then? Well, I didn't, this was part of the shipment of free samples from Haagen-Dazs. That said, I pressed on and the two chocolate factors did start to bring the coconut side a bit more in to balance. I kept taking small bites hoping the caramel would kick in more but I'm not sure it's that strong in relation to everything.

It's good enough that I could have pressed on, but I handed the bowl to my wife instead. She definitely enjoyed it more than I did and I plan on leaving most of this for her. Hopefully a couple of coconut fans out there can chime in and give us better thoughts than I've put out here.

On Second Scoop: Sorry for the anticlimactic finish here but there is no second scoop on this one. It got lost in one of the power outages (can't remember which one).

Verdict?  anyone one to make a Mounds comparison?
Buy Again?  not my thing

  1. Can't wait to find this as I adore coconut!

  2. I liked the original ones fine. Tried the lemon/raspberry sauce one and didn't care for it. The lemon ice cream was nice but I was someone expecting the raspberry sauce to stay more liquidy and not as icy/brittle as it was.

  3. Coconut lover here: I didn't really find this one very compelling. I felt like the coconut got pretty lost. When it came through, it was nice, but that wasn't very often. And as you said, the caramel was pretty scarce. I felt like there wasn't that much distinction between this one and the regular white+belgian chocolate Trio.

I honestly taste more of a coconut in B&J's Urban Bourbon - surprising since coconut is not a listed flavor! But I definitely taste it, and checking the label confirms coconut oil. Not a great thing for a coconut lover an ice cream that doesn't even list coconut beats one that does.

I didn't think it was bad, of course. My judgment is more parental: not mad, just disappointed.

I wish B&J would release a pint using just the coconut+fudge side from Coconuts for Caramel Core. It was a shared pint, and all three of us were surprised just how much better it was than the rest of the pint. Maybe also throw some nuts in it, cause I'm nuts about nuts.
