Walgreens Maple Macadamia Mash-Up Trace Adkins Celebrity Apprentice Ice Cream

[Debuted 2013, was available in a de-branded state] I don't know why, but I'm excited about this flavor. I had stopped over at the bigger Walgreens to pick up their S'mores ice cream when I was shocked to see both of the Celebrity Apprentice flavors still on the shelf. And these are fresh pints too with far out expiration dates. I've haven't noticed them at the smaller Walgreens, and I know the latest season of CA is already over, but when ice cream pints are 2 for $4, there is something liberating about trying something risky.

Walgreen's Good & Delish Ice Cream Mint Chocolate Chip & Chocolate Chunk

[By Nick] Time to look at the other pint of Good & Delish Homestyle ice cream I picked up. Unlike Banana Split, Mint Chocolate Chip wasn’t a part of the original Walgreen’s flavors so this one is in fact “new”. To be honest, I’m not too sure why they didn’t originally offer a mint flavor seeing as its pretty standard fare.

Described as “mint ice cream with chocolate chips” It’s pretty much just your basic mint chip flavor, nothing more and nothing less. That shouldn’t be all that shocking seeing as it’s a store brand ice cream and all though the picture on the pint does show a white base so if anything it is kind of straying from the norm and not being the token green mint products seem to be associated with.

Walgreen's Good & Delish Banana Split Ice Cream

[By Nick] When Walgreens launched their Good & Delish line of premium ice creams, they also rebranded their house brand Walgreens ice cream to the Good & Delish Home Style line. I tried the majority of those flavors back when they were still under the Walgreens name so I thought I’d pick up one of their old flavors to see if there was any change to the formula or if it’s just a cosmetic change. Now we don’t review many Banana flavored things on here because Dubba’s not a fan but I actually am. Well, I have to be in the right mood for it, but when I have a craving, it has to be satisfied!

This is exactly why my first choice was their Banana Split Home Style Ice Cream. This flavor is made up of Banana ice cream with maraschino cherries, chopped pineapple and chocolate fudge. While not exactly a traditional banana split, it has a majority of the components.

Ben & Jerry's Truffle Trifecta A Walgreen's Exclusive Ice Cream

[New for 2013, Non-GMO in 2015] Can you believe that yet another location has gotten in on the "exclusive" Ben & Jerry's list? This pint puts Walgreens in the company of Target, 7-11, and Walmart. Exclusive flavors tend to be decent, and sometimes hard to find, but for me it's time to check this one off the list.

This is Ben & Jerry's Truffle Trifecta ice cream. It's chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, fudge, and caramel truffles. That's right, three kinds of "truffles". Sure, truffles tend to be cubes in most ice creams, but "cup trifecta" just isn't that much fun to say. (next year's exclusive flavor: cup quartet?)

So, do you guys watch the celebrity apprentice? I remember the original season of the apprentice that actually use to teach us about teamwork, marketing, and business.... and I will admit to watching a large part of season 12, but overall I forget about it but I might watch it tonight because apparently the season is ending with an ice cream showdown, how cool is that? Which ever flavor sold more this past week will be crowned the winner tonight. So who did I vote for with my $4.19?

This is Penn Jillette's Vanilla & Chocolate Magic Swirtle Ice Cream benefiting Opportunity Village. It's rich vanilla ice cream with a sea salt chocolate swirl and fudge caramel candy pieces. Sea salt chocolate swirl has your attention doesn't it?

Walgreen's Delish Moose Tracks Ice Cream Sandwiches Review

You know what keeps me blogging year after year? It's that magical moment when you find a treat that tastes even better than it sounds. Oh yeah my friends, I had one of those moments today.

These are good & deLISH Moose Tracks Ice Cream Sandwiches from Walgreens, nay, they are SUPER PREMIUM ICE CREAM SANDWICHES proclaims the box! It's premium vanilla ice cream with peanut butter flakes swirled with denali moose tracks fudge between two chocolate wafers. This treat is so cool, it needs to wear a scarf (WORD!)

It's been a long time since we've had any of Walgreen's ice cream on the blog... yes, let's start with the fact that Walgreen's does actually make their own ice cream. Ok, now that that is settled, the reason they aren't on the blog much is not the fact that there stuff is bad, it's the fact that they rarely come out with new flavors.

Well, low and behold, we've got changes! During the second half of 2012, Walgreen's started re-branding their ice cream. Nick and I have been talking about it a bit as the product line slowly came out, but when I went back today I have to say that the re-branding is looking pretty complete.

So  good & de LISH  is the new inhouse brand name and here it is on their premium ice cream pints. It's a tragically black background with a variety of white writing and then some color coded larger letters for the flavor name. Notice the star design to go with the strawberry cheesecake starlet name. Let me just come out and say that I don't love the new packaging, but you have to tip your hat to the mighty description of "strawberries, pie crust pieces & a strawberry swirl in a cheesecake ice cream".

Next up is royal chocolate fudge brownie complete with crown shaped naming artistic-ness hubbub picture bedazzled thingamijig. We're talking dark purple writing on a black background, how exactly is this suppose to catch my eye?

Two more flavors: cafe amore (in the shape of a heart) and udderly vanilla (in the shape of a cow). Now I get that amore goes with cafe because they both sound kinda fancy and then amore is love is a heart, but I'm pretty sure udders don't taste like vanilla. Oh, alright, I never said I was funny, but you get my meaning, this branding is stretching the usual bounds of naming conventions.

Well, now here is something new. On top of the foo foo premium pints, we've got these new homestyle pints. I assume these are meant to replace Walgreen's blue pints of non-premium ice cream. Falling peanut butter cups onto a giant scoop of moose tracks ice cream? Now that makes me hungry. Falling chunks onto chocolate chunk ice cream? Also a win-win.

Two more regular/homestyle flavors: banana split and rich vanilla (in 1.5 quart serving sizes). Notice both of these make you hungry as well. I'm dying to know what those little strawberry candies taste like. This is how you brand!

One more foo foo pint with such a terrible design that I don't even know how to read it. Now I was going to torment Nick by picking up this butter wishes & pecan dreams with it's awesome "salted caramel butter pecan ice cream" description, but then I decided to leave this one for Nick and go for a combo I can never resist: chocolate and peanut butter!

Ok, so here is a closer look at the very foo foo-ish branding of cookie dough & peanut butter duet.  To be honest, there's very little here that makes me want to buy this pint other than the description. I appreciate the creativity, but let's really think about this. First off, it doesn't catch my (hungry) eye, especially in the poorly lit freezer. Second, it's hard to read. Oh, I get they are trying to be funny and playful, I mean duet = music = guitar = originality... but that doesn't mean I have to actually like the design. Third, there's just so much wasted space. The whole think is just chaotic and wasteful at the same time.

In fact, they are now branching out with no sugar added and light ice creams (there was a fair sized sticker on the freezer pointing this fact out). Now I believe that they've started out with just two delight flavors: Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate Chip. Let's dig in!

My brain may be painfully high on varnish fumes, but I'm pretty sure this is the most horribly freezer burned ice cream I have ever tried, and that's a shame because I'm pretty sure this is a top notch flavor. There are these delicate flakes of chocolate through the ice cream which makes it one of the coolest looking ice creams I've seen in awhile.

I'm busy wrapping things up with the other division (yeah, they both got sold, but this one wasn't paying my salary). I had a super late lunch, and I just got back from my afternoon snack hangout, Walgreens. I decided to take a crack at one of their non-premium flavors. Their entry level stuff includes neopolitan, chocolate, vanilla, and cookies & creme. Actually, I almost grabbed a pint of their rainbow sherbet, but then went back to my choice of cookies 'n cream.

I was so hungry that waiting in line with the ice cream was pretty tough, but ice cream is about relaxing, not about getting worked up on spending an extra 2 minutes in line. Surprisingly enough, the nice lady behind the counter apologized for making my ice cream melt. See? balance has been restored. I told her not to worry, the ice cream is just easier to eat now.

So, through the rain and back to the car. Crack open the container, in goes the spoon, out comes the potential goodiness ....and I'm disappointed. Not nearly enough cookie flavor to go around. Occasionally you run into a big chunk, but these generic cookies just don't offer top notch flavor. It's bland, plain and simple. Not much else to say except now I know why it's not a premium flavor.

Walgreens Crème de Menthe Andes Ice Cream Review

In the previous post I mentioned that I went out on a limb and picked up Walgreen's Crème de Menthe Premium ice cream, which is based on Andes Candies Crème de Menthe Thin mints. I must have been feeling awful bold on Friday because:

1. I never eat mint chocolate chip ice cream
2. I prefer York Peppermint patties
3. technically, I rarely eat chocolate mints in general

I decided to go for the initial taste test last night. The exact description is "Refreshing Crème de Menthe Ice Cream with Delicious Fudge and Real Andes Creme de Menthe Chips". Crack open the container and you find yourself presented with a light green ice cream, a fudge swirl, and little chunks of Crème de Menthe. You know, I'm getting a little tired of typing that, let's go see what it means: Ahhh, a sweet, mint-flavored liquer. Well, now I know.

Walgreens Makes Ice Cream?

Did you know Walgreens makes their own ice cream? They do! Started waaaaaaaaay back in 1912 actually! How's that for history?

I got a long distance request that my next purchase should be from Walgreens, so I headed on over after work on Friday. It's funny, because even though there are Walgreens everywhere, there isn't one by my house. So, I went prepared with a freezer pack and my lunch bag.

I went to the snack section and I was impressed, an entire section of the freezer was dedicated to Walgreens ice cream. The next section was dedicated to other ice creams (at very high prices mind you). Anyway, there are two choices to get you started. There is the standard ice cream in blue containers. I noted flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and cookies & creme. Your other option is to go with the dark containers that contain the "premium" ice creams which have a nice selection of unique flavors.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find a flavor list on their website, but this is what I remember (names may be slightly off): blueberry pie, New York cherry, moose tracks, bear claw, cookie dough, Andes, strawberry cheesecake, and a couple others. The first pick was obvious: cookie dough. I decided to try something very new to me for pick #2: Andes (I don't think I've ever tried mint ice cream).

The cookie dough didn't reside in the freezer very long, but I did manage to snag a half dozen bites to nail down my initial impression. It's a tasty treat that most closely resembles Turkey Hill's take on cookie dough. The base is a little different and Walgreens pulls out another trick: Rather than your standard chocolate chip, they go with very thin chips which break up and go everywhere. A excellent touch in my opinion.

Oh yeah, forgot to talk about price: I think regular pints were $1.50 or so, and premium pints are $1.99. Thankfully, they were on sale at 2 for $3. Even at $2, you're still clocking in below the Ben & Jerry's price. You also have the option for going for 1.5 Quart containers at a decent price ($4.29 maybe, I forget)
