Turkey Hill Sea Salt Caramel Gelato

[2015-2016] A few of you have reminded me that we never covered all of the new Turkey Hill gelatos. I was going to throw out some excuse like the reviews weren't trending well, but I checked and to my surprisie there is definitely interest there. So, shameless stats aside, let's try....

Turkey Hill Sea Salt Caramel Gelato
caramel gelato with caramel truffles

Nothing really peaking through yet...

Ofcourse I snagged a truffle after taking this picture.

Let's start with the disclaimer that I haven't messed with Turkey Hill's gelato since March. That said, it's been a long year and I'm wondering if I will appreciate it more now even though I'm kind of meh on many caramel flavors. Wow, sorry to start this off on the meh note. My bad. Let's dig in.

I'll be honest, I still have trouble telling this from their all natural ice cream. I mean, my brain is registering some kind of difference, it's a bit denser/heavier, but it's not night and day. It's maybe 4pm vs 6pm.

Caramel flavor is decent. Not too buttery, not too sweet, and not too burnt. The salt level? Yeah, it's noticeable and not something I could write off. At least the overall flavor isn't flat or super mild, because that would just be super annoying.

Ok, that's it for the first scooping. We've got a good amount of flavor, a fair amount of truffles, and the texture is decent (though I fear Shaws may have let my quart get a little too warm at some point).

On Second Scoop: Oh geez, I can't get a bite without a truffle in it and that my friends is a definite #FunFactor. I mean I am mostly done my serving and I've still got like six truffles in my bowl. At the moment I'm not sure where I'd rank it among other contenders, but it's doing it's job and I can't knock that. Well done Turkey Hill.

Verdict?  not bad at all
Buy Again?  if the urge struck

  1. I'm the biggest TH fan in the world and this gelato and the All Natural Sea Salt Caramel are my all time faves. Glad you enjoyed it Dubba!

  2. How does this compare to Talenti? Talenti's Sea Salt Caramel is my gold standard.

  3. @Anon: ha, that's why I said I wasn't sure where to rank it. I know a lot of people adore the Talenti version but I think I've only had it one other time since I first tried it when it came out in 2011. If you love ssc I would give this a try, wait for a sale if need be, but definitely give it a try.

  4. I have a coupon for a free container of their gelato and I'm torn between this flavor, the chocolate peanut butter, the hazelnut, and their coffee chip flavor. I've never tried any of their gelatos yet urgh, which one would you recommend the most?? There's not too many reviews out there for each flavor!

  5. I've tried their choc peanut butter and the caramel sea salt was FAR superior!

  6. @Caitlin: I am behind as well, so I would either go with Danielle's suggestion or if you have one flavor you really love in general, try that one first.

  7. Talenti is much better IMO. I was very disappointed by this flavor and I haven't dared trying the others because of it.

  8. @Fran: Are you talking about Talenti being better in general, or on this particular flavor? I don't mean to imply we are comparing apples to apples here as Talenti is a high end product and the Turkey Hill is meant to be a mainstream purchase ($$ vs $)

  9. @Caitlin,

I would also love to know how the coffee chip is! If you try it, will you come back and leave a comment please? I know it seems like a small purchase but I'm on a tight budget and hate to waste $ on frozen goodies that I end up hating!

    Thank you!

  10. I went into the store today with every intention of trying this.
But then I noticed Haagan-Dazs was on sale for $2.50, which is better than I've ever seen! I caved and tried their sea salt caramel gelato.
    Holy, woah.
Does this even compare to that flavor?
Because that blew me away. That was awesome. I think I'll go with the coffee chip version of this once I find a store that carries it because there's no way this caramel will beat Haagan-Daz's version xD

  11. @Caitlin: That is a great price for HD, not sure I've seen it go quite that though, but I would stuck up if I saw it. That said, in general, HD is premium brand while Turkey Hill is mainstream product. The HD is excellent, but it has a swirl rather than truffles, so I guess it would depend what you are in the mood food.

I forgot I had compared HD and Talenti one time http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2013/03/haagen-dazs-gelato-sea-salt-caramel.html

  12. Thanks, I definitely have to agree, I much prefer HD! I think the sweetness is about the same which surprised me, but I miss that gelato texture; I would have also loved to see TH use swirls! I find it strange however that they chose to use a nonfat milk base o.o

  13. The thing is though, I can typically find Talenti or Haagen Dazs for $3 or less... Best price I've found on TH Gelato is $3.50 *maybe*. Sure, the box is bigger, but still... I'd just wait for a sale on Talenti or HD. But I'm picky about what I spend my calories on!

  14. @Everyone: holy freholy, did I make enough typoes in my last comment? that's bad even for me.

@Caitlin: it's all food science! I'm not exactly sure how all those things work, but i know ingredient #2 is cream, so I don't worry about it.

@Fran: technically a $3 pint of HD would be $6 a quart which is more than the $3.50 a quart for Turkey Hill. That said, eat what makes you happy! :)

  15. All That I will say is save your money for the talenti...this stuff in my Chocolate TH was just ice cream in a gelato skin box! I will never buy their products ever...so disappointed!
