Shake Shack Shakes

[Note: this is a review of past holiday flavors. The current line-up (for summer) is Campfire S'mores (new for 2020), Banana Pudding, and Oreo Cookie Funnel Cake (new for 2022)]

We did it! We finally made it to Shake Shack (way) back in December! You see, many (many) moons ago, Massachusetts didn't have any Shake Shacks, and that was sad, but then in March 2013, our first Shake Shack opened in Chestnut Hill, and that just happened to be where we were on one particular Sunday.

DQ Orange Cream Shake

[New for 2025] Orange is not a go to flavor for me, but I did need something to go with my French Fries, so I tried....

DJ Khaled Another Bun Nesquik

[New for August 2024] Back in June, when they announced that DJ Khaled was the newest spokesperson for Nesquik, they teased that something was in the works...

DJ Khaled Another Bun Nesquik
cinnamon bun flavored lowfat milk

So the reason the blog has been so quiet is that I broke my right foot at the beginning of September and have been unable to walk (and let alone drive) for the last several weeks. Well, the boot is off and I made my first test drive to my local Walmart.

I've been on a weird strawberry milk kick for the last two weeks, but when I went to pick up more, I found the new DJ Khaled Another Bun Nesquik. If you didn't know, he's a huge ice cream fan (just look up DJ Khaled ice cream freezer).

Anyway, another bun is decent. It could be stronger in flavor, but it's better than those Nestle Sensations drinks they put out. I don't know if I'll crave drinking this flavor, but I do kind of want to buy another one and pour it in to a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch (or other tasty cinnamon cereal).

On Second Sip: I couldn't help myself and bought another one. It's not bad, but my wife pointed out that it tasted a little watered down, and she's right. It's still better than the alternatives, but I probably won't buy a third one....

Verdict?  decent

News: Would you rather....

[New for Fall 2024] Unfortunately I am unable to hunt for ice cream right now, so let's play a game of "Would you rather" for two new tropical milkshakes. First up, we have the new Witch Please Shake from Jack in the box. It's Ube flavored and has crushed Oreos in the mix.

photo is from the Jack in the Box website

And then we have the new Double Pineapple Mini Shake from Del Taco. It's vanilla shake layered with diced pineapple and topped with pineapple flavoring.

Now, I don't love pineapple, and I've never had Ube, but Marvo did review the Jack in the box shake and said it basically tastes like coconut. He also mentioned that it's not very purple and you can't taste the Oreo (read the full review here). So based on that, I think maybe I'd try the double pineapple first, if only because the menu photo looks like it's some kind of fun peach milkshake.

So, which would you rather try? Or is there a better tropical shake that I'm missing here?  Technically the very limited "Tropical Lime" Taco Bell Mtn Dew Baja Blast Gelato might still be available to some of us, has anyone tried it?

[HAHAHA, I just read a review of someone who didn't want to try the gelato because they didn't want to pay $4 for it. They said that they could get a gallon of ice cream for four dollars instead. Oh man, I would not eat ice cream that costs four dollars a gallon hehehehe - in theory they meant container of ice cream for four dollars, but it was still funny to read]

Cold Stone Creamery Lucky Charms Shake

[New for 2021] I just wanted to take a moment to say this Lucky Charms shake is absolutely delicious. It tasted just like I wanted it to taste and I can't help but want another (dozen). Yes, it's that good.

My only mild comment is that the shake seemed a little thinner than the last few I've had, but I get that not every shake is the same.  Oh, and there weren't any marshmallow or cereal bits that distracted from the amazing flavor of this one. I know the description says that, but I didn't see any sign of them (not that I'm broken up about it). Anyway, go try this!

Wendy's Pumpkin Spice Frosty

[New for Fall 2023] A new limited edition frosty debuted today, and while I've kind of given up hope on frostys in general, I couldn't help but try it.

Mooyah Milkshakes!

Almost 4 years ago I tried a milkshake from MOOYAH while grabbing lunch with our ol' pal Nick. I told myself I would go back someday and see if their milkshakes were as impractically thick as they were the first time around. Well, me and the Mrs finally went back to try them again.

Baskin-Robbins Milkshakes

Ok, let's start with the bad news: no more BR reviews for awhile since the insiders program has been suspended. Man, I'm going to miss those happy boxes arriving every month!

With that in mind, maybe it was fitting that we got the world's saddest drive thru person on our way home from Jersey yesterday. I asked for milkshakes and you could just hear the sadness in their voice. The fact that they didn't have any simple options (outside vanilla) meant that the sad person had to rattle a long list of long flavor names. In the end, we wound up going with...

Dairy Queen Pumpkin Cookie Butter Shake

[New for late summer 2020] The Mrs and I finally made it back to DQ for the first time in a very long time (two years!). There wasn't anything in particular that I wanted from the menu, but then I noticed a sign for this shake and I knew we should get one to try.

Nestle Sensations Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnamilk

I did something foolish. I ignored the voice that told me to skip this because I had hoped there might be a chance that it would be decent. Well, I was wrong.

I really hate the texture of these things. Sure, a decade ago, I was a big fan of the cookies & cream one that Hershey had put out, but nowadays, it's just food science and profit margins.

I never went back after those first few sips. I've had similar products with similar textures and I have no interest in them. I'd much rather get something from Promised Land Dairy because those are delicious.

Verdict?  ewwwww

Klondike Vanilla Shake

[New for 2021] Klondike is branching out from their trandtional offerings in two new ways this year. Thereare the new cones that I will cover in a week or so, and then there are two new flavors of shake pouches (the strawberry flavor should be coming out later in the year). I'm sure a lot of people will try chocolate first, so let's be different and try....

Twix Chocolate Lowfat Milk

I was grabbing a few random snacks to call my lunch when I spied...

Twix Chocolate Lowfat Milk

I thought "hey, why not? I like TWIX and I like chocolate milk, what could go wrong?" Ok, that last part is a lie. I knew exactly what could go wrong and it did.

It's not that it tastes super terrible, it's the fact that not only does it not taste like TWIX really, but it tastes like some kind of coffee - caramel hybrid and you all know I don't like coffee. I could drink it for the sake of not wasting it, but I'm not enjoying it at all.

I wound up drinking less than half of the milk at lunch with the thought that I could sneak it in to the back of closest fridge and then finish the rest on the way home. Yeah, I left it in that fridge and I don't know the next time I will be back to it. What a shame. So sad. Real broken up about it. Gonna need a minute to gather myself....

Verdict?  why?

DQ Cinnamon Roll Shake

[New for early Fall 2019] You know, I've reviewed a lot of shakes for this blog. In all I've reviewed some 123 drink like products and I can honestly say that this one has jumped near the top of the list for me. I adore cinnamon and I could not stop drinking...

Five Guys Oreo Cookie Pieces Shake

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. I just wanted to say that I finally tried a shake from Five Guys and it was good. They put it on the menu as a vanilla shake and then you pick what you want in it. You can get Bacon, Bananas, Cherries, Chocolate, Coffee, Malted Milk, Oreo Cookie Pieces, Peanut butter, Salted Caramel, and Strawberries. If you want to pick more than one, that's cool with them too. I decided to start with my favorite shake.

Five Guys Oreo Cookie Pieces Shake

Simply put, it was good and I will get it again. I know there is the crowd that prefers a thinner shake with their fast food (say from McDonald's) but I prefer a thicker shake. It's not scoop shop thick, but it's got heft to it. They also did a good job blending it, I got plenty of Oreo wafer flavor with just a sprinkling of larger bits coming up the straw now and then.

I will definitely get shakes from them again and the urge to mix and match mix-ins will definitely be in play next time. Hey, let's do something different, what's the craziest but still tasting sounding combo you can think of? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Verdict?  good
Buy Again?  yup!

Why did Dunkin change my beloved Coolatta?

Look, I've been drinking Coolattas since they first came out. I don't remember exactly when I feel in love with the Strawberry one, but I remember them setting up on a Boston street and handing out free samples of the "new" coolatta in the 90s. I think my wife and I tried the vanilla bean one at the time, but I'm not positive. My point is it has been forever, and now, in 2018, they've finally gone and ruined the Coolatta. Why I ask, WHY?

No, it's not totally dead to me, I will still get them on occasion, but the switch to a much finer ice particle has taken away the magic that was the strawberry coolatta. I can't tell you how many times that I would grab an icy cold strawberry coolatta to help with one of my headaches. Or how about those fun days where I would take a long walk to get one with one of their discontinued lunchtime sandwiches. Man Dunkin, you sure have wormed your way out of my heart.

I now open the floor to anyone else who would like to vent about Dunkin, whether it's their coolattas or lackluster donuts or something missing on their menu.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Reader Meghan is right! You can still get a Coolatta the "old" way! I felt a little silly asking, but the very nice lady behind the counter was like "no no, I never use the new Oasis machine for coolattas". She made my beloved Strawberry Coolatta the way I love it and off I went on my drive home. Guess I need to be careful on all my future orders!

MOOYAH Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Milkshake

Hey, guess who I saw today? Nick! He drives back and forth a bunch between New York and Maine these days, but his passing by doesn't always line up with the chance for us to catch up for a bit. Well, I told him next time things line up, I would buy him a birthday burger and shake at Mooyah (which I've been meaning to try but I hate going in to new places by myself).

Red Dawn Monster Mutant Slurpee

Everyone knows why Deadpool's suit is red, but do you know why his Slurpee is red? Hmm, yeah, that's not funny. Better question, why is the 7-eleven website useless? I just wanted to verify if this thing has caffeine or not.. The mutant site isn't any better... ok, the regular soda has caffeine.. wait, you stopped reading already didn't you?

Red Dawn Monster Mutant Slurpee
(cherry flavored) - wait, there are four other cup designs?

I feel like I tried mutant soda at one point, but all you really need to know is that this tastes like cherry mtn dew. I mean more artificial cherry than real cherry, but that's the gist of it. I was a little scared after the first sip because I thought this was going to taste like every other fake citrus slurpee, but I did like (tolerate) it more once I had several sips in me.

Still with me? Ok, this is really just a filler post because it's quite humid and I don't feel like sitting here forever. I would like to give you an update on what's in the post pipeline (once it cools off). I just picked up the last Trio, so there's that. I would like to talk about the return of Steve's Ice Cream at some point (should probably do this next). I still have a ton of Blue Bunny stuff to cover (what they sent over as well as me picking up the Load'd Sundaes on my own dime). I also have a topping review and one more triple-filled review to do. I also just picked up another pint of Big Gay Ice Cream, and I still have the Cherry Garcia pint slices waiting, but there's not a whole lot after that. There's just not a ton of things left that I am hunting for except one other Trio'politan flavor (I've literally found it, but I need a place close to home to carry it)

The truly biggest thing I want to get done is a 2018 product guide. Yes, you could just scroll through the last 5 months of reviews, but I really want a single post that you can reference and see how you are doing in your quest to try everything 2018 has to offer. But seriously, I've let myself push this off again and again and now it's June. I don't want to give up this tradition, though if anyone wants to chime in and say it doesn't really help anymore, I am open to thoughts and comments.

P.S. Feel free to leave suggestions about what you think I haven't covered yet.
