What flavor do you miss most?

Whether you've been eating ice cream for 50 days or 50 years, what flavor do you miss more than any other? If I asked instagram, I feel like these would be two of the top choices:

Ben & Jerry's Flavor Graveyard : Oatmeal Cookie Chunk & What a Cluster

Yup, we stopped by the super crowded Ben & Jerry's Waterbury Plant on the way back from Burlington this weekend and did a quick spin through the gravestones and people in the flavor graveyard. Oh how this place is busy during the long labor day weekend. Anyway, I -think- I tried oatmeal cookie chunk but it was before I started documenting my time in the freezer aisle. What a cluster (aka clusterfluff) was delicious. I would be happy to scoop either one of these again.

So, what flavor do you miss more than anything? It doesn't have to be a Ben & Jerry's flavor that you miss. I think the two long lost items I think about most are 1980s style Breyers and Blue Bunny Sedona treats. With so many health trends coming and going, it's a little funny to think we don't have a good granola focused treat out there right now (outshine is probably the closest thing we have right now). Me thinks it's a missed opportunity.

Ok, comment time!

  1. I'm really going to throw it old school here, but Viennetta ice cream cake was one of the coolest things in the freezer aisle when I was a little kid, as was the OG Starbucks coffee ice cream. I was lucky enough to find Viennetta while on a trip to England last year, and it was exactly as you might expect it would be now (i.e. artificially flavored and lower quality) but the novelty of it remained.

As for Ben and Jerry's, I miss Late Night Snack, which was close to perfect in my estimation. And regarding the Sedona sandwiches, you might have a similar taste from It's-It, if they're available in your area.

  2. No It's-It except via online ordering, plus it's oatmeal and not granola, but I would totally try it ofcourse!

  3. I know its not your thing necessarily (cuz of the coffee swirl) but I really loved Ben and Jerrys Dublin Muslide. Also every Graeters flavor, because although they are not retired, I cannot get them anymore and they were my ‘LAST MEAL’ ice cream.

  4. Even I think Dublin Mudslide is cool :) Stinks you can't find Graeters.

  5. there's an awesome little shop in Great Barrington that makes all of their flavors from scratch, with a lot of opportunistic creativity. i.e. whatever is in season or available and some amazing inspiration. (the downside being that you may not see the same flavors the next day, much less next week or month or next year.)

my absolute favorite of theirs was called 5-0 ...
    - local milk and local cream.
    - resulting in not-too-sweet, strong coffee ice cream, made using freshly roasted dark coffee from the cafe next door.
    - containing large chunks of cinnamon powder donut, freshly made from the bakery other next door.

(I feel like they first either toasted or froze (or maybe both?) the donut chunks, to better hold up in the ice cream as it was finishing)

  6. OK, anyone remember Edy's Dreamery line of ice creams? I don't remember if they were really much of a step-up in quality from regular Edy's, but I do remember I loved that pint artwork, and some of the exclusive flavors.

And since you mentioned Blue Bunny, I miss their pints of "24 Karat Cake"--one of the rare (and good) carrot cake ice creams I'd had.

  7. @tintar: sounds amazing

    @May: I have (figuratively) everything on this blog. Example #1 :) http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2009/06/what-flavor-do-you-dream-in.html

  8. I seem to remember really liking Dreamery back in the day. Had some fun combinations before combinations became super huge

  9. I miss Ben & Jerry's "Spectacular Speculoos". Can't believe so many people hated it. It kind of frightened me a bit though. I would eat an entire pint and STILL want more. So maybe it's for the best.

I miss Blue Bunny's birthday cake ice cream sandwiches.

Again, don't understand why those weren't selling. The soft blonde wafers really tied everything together and gave a true "birthday cake" experience, not just "vanilla & sprinkles".

This shouldn't count because it's not ice cream (though it wwlould've made the best DQ Blizzard of all time) but Brownie Batter Oreos from 3 years ago.

They were here for one month, and never came back. Meanwhile the swedishfish Oreos (what I have dubbed as "Troll Oreos") were a thing for over 6 months.

    Mind boggling.

  10. Haagen Dazs Cappucino Commotion. Nothing like it exists.

  11. 2nd St.Creamer had some really good flavors. Too bad they never quite caught on.

  12. I remember the Dreamery line! The cool mint one was so good. Miss these. Also the Blue Bunny Personals line which has a cool container that it is designed just for you. Nowadays it is too crowded with low cal ice creams.

  13. Edys Autumn Apple Pie is the only flavor I have never been able to duplicate

  14. @Unknown: check out 7-11 store brand pints, to me they are the spiritual successor to 2nd St (aka they come from the same plant/manufacturer and I think the texture is similar)

    @last-anon: don't be angry, we're all different :)

  16. Fossil Fuel...Surprised they didn't bring it back with the Jurassic Park craze.

  17. I miss the Godiva Pints....especially the dark chocolate one!

  18. @Dubba: Holy Coolwhip, I didn't even realize Dreamery was that extensive even back in the day! Oh, how well Edy's could do with a revival...

@Anonymous: No tears over the Blue Bunny Birthday Party sandwiches... I can still get them in the single-serve ice cream case at the Dollar Tree! And yup, they're good!

  19. I am not sure I would like these today but the ones that come to mind are:

The old friendly's sundae cartons (not the cups)--especially the chocolate ice cream with the mini M and Ms, marshmallow and fudge swirls. So sweet and so good! I also liked the Snicker's.

Breyer's used to make a light chocolate chocolate chip that was delicious.

Edy's used to make "Swiss orange" which was sherbet with dark chocolate chips and a strawberry ice cream with chocolate flakes (neither sound good to me now but were delicious)

Ben and Jerry's Fudge Central --brownie batter core is close but not quite as good.

    Hood grasshopper pie and patchwork.

    Ah, memories...

  20. My local grocery store used to make these giant chipwich ice cream sandwiches that they coated in chocolate. I used to bike down there every week as a kid and buy a box with whatever change I found. I eat the entire 4-pack in two days because my metabolism could handle it back then.

  21. Ben & Jerry's made a Brownie Batter flavor that basically got me through high school. I miss it dearly.

I miss B&J Peanut Buttah. I don't know what the idea is of a "truffles" line, but I guess they need to make new things because "NEW!". I loved all the core flavors, particularly the "cookie cores" including Boom Chocolatta. I DONT EVEN LIKE COFFEE ICE CREAM BUT I KEPT BUYING IT ANYWAY

Their Key Lime Pie I loved too... That was when I first opened my eyes to the possibilities and taste of 1000 calories per pint of ice cream.

TBH, with B&J cancelling their Cores line, I've hardly bought any of their stuff this summer. Most purchased pint from them has probably actually been their dairy free Caramel Almond Brittle. I'm not making trips to Target just for Keep Caramel & Cookie on or Peanut Butter World.

I also thought Talenti's PB Chocolate Pretzel was amazing. IMO top notch texture and perfectly executed chocolate covered pretzels.

Between Peanut Buttah and Talenti's PB Chocolate Pretzel being discontinued, I'm not meeting my weekly peanut butter ice cream requirements.

    1. Boom Chocolatta is my single favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor, and I typically don't do coffee ice cream either. That and Turkey Hill's "Double Dunker" are the only exceptions.

My local Kroger stores still have it, but that's the only cookie core flavor that has survived.

I haven't bought any in awhile but since so many people aren't seeing them around maybe I should just in case.

  23. I dearly miss Wavy Gravy...something about that Nutella like swirl and the way the almonds were roasted.

  24. The key line pie flavor. I miss it so much. 😭

  25. when I thought that Haagen-Dazs had completely discontinued the caramel pizzelle gelato pops I was upset, but then realized they had just switched it to ice cream so that was a relief. (though I do kinda miss the gelato)

and less importantly, I was looking around for magnum mint bars lately and then later checked and they'd been discontinued. I'm kind of kicking myself for missing my chance to try them. I LOVE mint but my usual go to when I was in the mood for magnum was the double chocolate.

    Ah well.

  26. Everyone bringing up key lime pie flavors made me remember another one!

Key Lime Pie Ciao Bella gelato sandwiches.

I love Key Lime Pie, but sometimes KLP-flavored frozen desserts have a tendency to taste like lime sherbert (YUCK)

Not Ciao Bella. Those sandwiches were just as delicious as the actual pie, if not better. Bright, crisp, refreshing, super tart and super sweet all at once. Perfection.

And I know everyone here hates FDD. I generally don't like it either, but Nestle's S'mores Drumsticks were pretty solid.

Those drumsticks and a S'mores ice cream sandwich I once got at 7-11 are the only smores desserts I've eaten that got "marshmallow flavored base" right.

Even Ben and Jerry's "Gimme Smore" couldn't get that right, even though I enjoy it.

  27. Ben & Jerry's Dublin Mudslide, Fossil Fuel, Bovinity Divinity and Oatmeal Cookie Chunk were all amazing and wish they would be brought back. I've even sent e-mails regarding this!

  28. Oh my goodness Oatmeal Cookie Chunk for SURE. That was the best Ben and Jerry flavor to ever hit the shelf. They did a cindoughrella this summer at the Scoop Shops and they have Oat of this Swirled which are good but pale in comparison to OCC. RIP.

  29. I was sad when Holidoodle from Blue Bunny had the listeria issues a few years ago! That ice cream was seriously one of my favorite foods ever! Even though it was sugar overload it was amazing!

Never tried Ben & Jerry's Festivus (didn't even know it was a thing, but there can never be too many Gingerbread foods).

  30. In A Crunch is a flavor I still miss like ten years later. The strong peanut base, the chocolate covered peanuts, the crispy chocolate swirl. Almost every peanut butter ice cream I've had since is just completely disappointing. Half the time they're labeled peanut butter when they're just a subpar vanilla or chocolate base with a stuff peanut butter ribbon, or else there's barely a hint of peanut butter in the base while it's drowned out by watery chips or jaw breaking peanut butter cups. Bring this back!

  32. Cake my Day was the best B&J cake flavor and I wish it would come back. The vanilla cake batter base, cake pieces, raspberry swirl, and amazing buttercream frosting which tied everything together was immaculate. Funnily enough, in the UK there's a similar flavor called "Birthday Cake for:" with almost the exact same components, so B&J could certainly bring back the US version easily.

And I would definitely love to try Boston Cream Pie or What a Cluster for the first time, as I heard great things about them but never got a chance to get them when they were out.
