Walgreen's Good & Delish Banana Split Ice Cream

[By Nick] When Walgreens launched their Good & Delish line of premium ice creams, they also rebranded their house brand Walgreens ice cream to the Good & Delish Home Style line. I tried the majority of those flavors back when they were still under the Walgreens name so I thought I’d pick up one of their old flavors to see if there was any change to the formula or if it’s just a cosmetic change. Now we don’t review many Banana flavored things on here because Dubba’s not a fan but I actually am. Well, I have to be in the right mood for it, but when I have a craving, it has to be satisfied!

This is exactly why my first choice was their Banana Split Home Style Ice Cream. This flavor is made up of Banana ice cream with maraschino cherries, chopped pineapple and chocolate fudge. While not exactly a traditional banana split, it has a majority of the components.

Fruttare or Chunks o' Fruti : Round 2 : Strawberry

It's only been three weeks since I posted my first attempt at a fight between Fruttare and Chunks o' Fruti. I meant well, but I kind of epically failed in my opinion. I knew at some point I would have a rematch, I just didn't expect market basket to replensih it's stock so soon, but they did. So, tonight, we're going with my favorite fruit treat flavor: strawberry. It's usually the hardest fruit flavor to mess up, it's tends to be nice and sweet, and now that I have both brands in the same flavor, it's a much fairer fight.

KLONDIKE THE CANDY!

[New for 2013] Whether you've seen them on store shelves or maybe just seen a review online, you probably know by now that flix candy has created New KLONDIKE THE CANDY! Sorry, didn't mean to yell, just trying to relay the excitement that the packaging has for the new products.

We've got Caramel and Mint Chocolate Chip versions, and I'll admit it, it's hard to resist the thought of Klondike flavored candy. Caramel is "caramel center covered in a milk chocolate flavored coating" while the mint one is "mint chocolate chip center covered in dark chocolate flavored coating". Each 1.4 oz pack contains 4 candies but unfortunately I thought to take this size comparison picture after I had already sampled both.

[Dubba's 2015 Update] 30 years old and still kicking! NYSFC has made the transition to Non-GMO ingredients, not bad considering it has five different mix-ins (inclusions). Nick's review after the break still stands and I will only add that I agree that the chocolate base runs the show.

[New for 2013] So I went to Whole Foods at lunch and three twins ice cream was on sale! A dollar off pints, 30 cents off individual ice cream sandwiches, and a buck thirty off a four pack of sandwiches. Translated, that means it's time for lunchtime dessert!

[New for 2013, discontinued] Along with the new greek frozen yogurts they released this year, Hood put out Harvey bars. They're Klondike bar imposters that come in four flavors. There is vanilla, vanilla chip, cookies 'n cream, and then toffee crunch which Nick has already called dibbs on.

Ciao Bella Pistachio Gelato Review

[By Nick, reformulated in 2014] After covering two of Ciao Bella’s base only offerings, it’s time to take a look at a flavor that has mix-ins, pistachios to be exact. Now I’m going to be up front here, I’ve never had a single pistachio in my life. I think it has to do with the fact that I was averse to trying both oddly green colored foods and plain nuts when I was little. Now that I’m older, my aversion is gone but I just haven't gotten around to tying pistachios, even with Psy promoting them. That’s all about to change though so let’s get to it!

Ciao Bella simply describes their Pistachio gelato as “intensely savory and silky smooth.” While I can get behind the latter statement, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an ice cream being described as savory.

[New for Fall 2013] Look, we all have "one of those days". The kind of late in the week, stumble out of bed, poke yourself in the eyeball with bills as you go to the mailbox, just worn out kind of days where you wind up eating junk food all day long. As you get older, it's probably best to have less of these days, and thankfully it's been a good while since I had one myself. Let's see, I had an ice cream sandwich for breakfast, cookies, peanuts, and cheese puffs for snack, and now a McFlurry for lunch, but don't worry, I'll eat a healthy dinner (yeah, that's the ticket).

Magnum Dark Chocolate Ice Cream Bar Review

[By Nick] It looks like it’s time for a review of a product that got overlooked a couple of years ago when it was released. The Magnum Dark Chocolate ice cream bar was among the original Magnum bars that were introduced to the U.S. market in 2011.

It’s pretty straightforward in composition seeing as its just vanilla bean ice cream that has been dipped in dark Belgium chocolate, 60% cacao if you want to be exact. It is the only bar they offer here in the states that uses their dark chocolate instead of the typical milk chocolate (though they do have a white chocolate version that we'll review at some point).

The New Orleans Ice Cream company was cool enough to insist that I try all their flavors despite my inherent aversion to alcohol based ice creams. To make it even tougher, this one has got banana in it to. Oh this won't be pretty.... let's keep this short and sweet.

This is New Orleans Ice Cream Company's Bananas Foster ice cream. It's "A classic New Orleans Dessert is given life as real banana pieces are blended with a rich caramel ice cream. nutmeg and rum add depth to this delight". Let's be honest, this one sounds way more fancy then I can handle.

So Delicious Cookies 'N Cream Coconut Milk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert

[By Nick] For some odd reason, I’ve been craving coconut lately. You all know I’m not a fan of coconut at all but I’ve just been having these urges. It has been awhile since we’ve featured So Delicious on the blog so I decided it was the perfect time to pick up another one of their coconut milk non-dairy frozen dessert pints.

My selection of So Delicious products is limited so I thought it would be a good idea to go with something I’ve had my eye on since I first tried their flavors: Cookies N’ Cream. There’s nothing more classic and satisfying than a good cookies and cream. So Delicious has surprised me twice now so let’s see if the third time is just as good.

[this flavor was discontinued at some point] The JC Pie Pops company is fairly young, it makes just one product, it comes in four flavors, and it's fantastic. Sorry, you needed to know that as soon as possible. You know those chocolate eclair ice cream bars you've had in the past, the ones that are decent but you kind of always wished there was a premium version that could truly satisfy you? Well, your wishes have come true!

Fruttare or Chunks o' Fruti

So I've been planning to have a big ol' Friday night fight between Fruttare and Fruti since before the summer even began. I first spied Fruti at Market Basket back in... gee, I don't even know now, April maybe? They were just kind of humbly sitting amongst all the italian ice and fruit bar products and I thought "gee, I've never seen these before".

I went with the Caribbean Mix Fruit Bars because, well, I guess I was hoping for a nice fruit punch vibe. It's a fairly simple package that definitely has that small company feel to it. Unfortunately I left them sitting there in my freezer because we got buried by all the great free samples we got this year. It happens, I'm not proud of it, but it happens.

While that was all going on, I started seeing Fruttare bars pop up in stores and then eventually I started hearing those Ryan Seacrest advertisements for them. I felt like I was falling behind and that I should review them, but to be honest, I was having more fun eating ice cream and just wasn't ready to dig into any fruit bars. At some point I gave in and picked up the black cherry bars with the assumption I would mix them into my schedule.

Haagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato Review

[By Nick, New for 2013, discontinued before 2016] Ever since my fairly positive encounter with Ben & Jerry’s Liz Lemon earlier this year, I have been seriously craving lemon flavored desserts. A quick glace through the freezer isle shows that lemon is a very neglected flavor when it comes to creamy applications. Sure there are tons of sorbets and Italian ices but there is little to none of it in ice cream form. So with one Haagen-Dazs gelato under my belt and a hunger for some lemon goodness, I thought it would be the perfect time to pick up Haagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato.

Haagen-Dazs describes this one as “creamy lemon gelato with vodka.” Now I normally stay away from alcohol infused flavors since I’m straight edge and so I’m not really sure what to expect. However, one of my alcoholic versed friends informed me that vodka is essentially flavorless. Well okay, but then why would they include it in the first place since it adds no flavor? Whatever the case may be, I was less hesitant to give this one a try than I originally was.

[2015 Update] Chocolate Fudge Brownie has made the transition to Non-GMO and the giant fudge brownies are as fun as they've always been. I'm a big fan of this classic combo and this version has a great ice cream to brownie ratio. Original review after the break.
