York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream Bars
A Treat Review

[Appear to have been discontinued to make room for 2015's thin mint version]
One of the neatest looking new 2012 products has to be the York Peppermint Patty Ice Cream bar. A York is a straight forward (and tasty) treat that should translate well to ice cream... ok, no suspense today. This treat does translate pretty well, but let's dig into why this is a good treat and not a great treat.

The new 3oz York Peppermint Patty Ice Cream bars are peppermint light ice cream dipped in a dark chocolate flavored coating. This box of six only set me back $3.28 at Walmart.

Doh! Good Humor lost a perfectly good chance to set the mood here. You all know I get frustrated by plain white wrappers. A simple shiny wrapper with little blue York logos might add a few cents to each treat, but it's a crucial step in setting the mood.

Thankfully I had some regular (snack size?) peppermint patties laying around..... no, let me rephrase that. I stole this peppermint patty from the pack I bought my wife the other week, but hey, it's all in the name of (dessert) science.

I'm sure you are noticing what I did. The ice cream's chocolate isn't as dark and doesn't have that cool trademark ripples of the original despite the fact that the box implies it will have them. (I don't like false advertising, it's not nice!). I took a big whiff but that wonderful York smell isn't really present either.

Don't worry, I bit the ice cream bar first so as not to skew my opinion of it. There's a nice light peppermint ice cream inside. The flavor isn't too potent and the light ice cream is very soft and typical of what we find in many of these treats. I'm way too picky to say it tastes just like a York but it's a totally respectable treat and I think a lot of our York lovin' compatriots will be glad to finally have something like this in their freezers.

Ok, let's recap. One, it needs a better wrapper. Two, the shell could be thicker and darker, and in a perfect world, I'd love it to be a little softer just like the original. Three, the ice cream is perhaps a smidge mild, but I don't want to complain too loudy because it's better than being overpower. You know, I rarely ever crave a York peppermint patty, but when I do have one, it always hits the spot. It's just a straight forward and consistent treat. I think it's the peppermint filling's texture that sells it for me. If they could some how add a bit of grit to the ice cream's texture, this thing would be perfect in my mind.

So there you have it. A nice minty treat that should sell well. Nice job Good Humor.

On Second Scoop: This really is a nice homage to York Peppermint Patties. I just had one and I'm totally in the York zone... in winter. There's that familiar York tingle, the dark chocolate balance, it's all here, it's just in a chilly place. This may not have been clear before but I really do like this treat. I know I nitpicked a little, but it's only because I have a lot of respect for the original. Try these out.

Verdict?  A nice addition to the freezer aisle

  1. I just saw these yesterday and got kind of excited. I remember Klondike had some York branded bars out a few years ago and I loved them. I was hoping these would be like a round Klondike.

  5. I loved these. So yummy. Then again I enjoy most mint ice cream so that's to be expected. As I've mentioned before, mint ice cream is my OTP!

I especially enjoyed the crunchy chocolate shell. Yum!

  7. I absolutely loved these ice cream bars. I've been looking for them but I can't seem to find them anymore in any of the local grocery stores where I live. Did they discontinue the ice cream bars?
