Jeni's Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream

Well well well, it's been quite a day hasn't it? (if you are reading this years from now, you can just google the date). In reality, it's been quite the year with a lot of.... well, a lot of what makes 2020 shall we say. Now, to break out of the funk that is the 2020 ice cream season, I picked up a half dozen unique items from Wegman's last Sunday morning to keep me going. Two of those items are pints from Jeni's, a company that I've never tried. That's right! Nick did all of the other Jeni's reviews back when they had the clear packaging. I just wasn't willing to spend ten bucks a pint. Well the price has come down to $8 and I'm dying for something different. Time to try...

Oh no, that's not a little freezer burn is it?

I take my first bite and it's delicious. Wow. I continue on and every bite is as equally good. There's just so much great flavor coming with each spoonful. Wow. I can't remember the last time that I had a pint that was this tasty. Seriously. This is such a nice change of pace that I'm (mostly) ok that it cost 8 bucks.

Granted, I have loved butterscotch for a long time, so maybe that helps. I also love textured ice cream, so that helps too. If I had to describe this in one word: amazing. It's just that good. Again, this one is kind of aimed at all the things I love about ice cream and I could just eat this whole pint right now (but I won't).

So flavorful. Lots of sweetness. Great texture to convey that sweetness and flavor. The cake bits are just the right size and density. Not too hard, not too soft, not too dry. The swirl is amazing. Everything is dialed in wonderfully here.

Is the cream cheese vibe strong? Nope. I don't even really think about is as I spin around in the awesome butterscotch/toffee/crunch&munch flavor vibe that's going on here. It's definitely more of a cake flavor, but more like a breakfast cake than a birthday cake. I'm making myself hungry just trying to write down these descriptions.

If you ever see this one, buy it!

On Second Scoop: This may have been even better on the second scooping. It's one of those flavors where you have to be aware that you might start eating it faster and faster because it amuses you so much. --- I'm really glad I found this flavor. I was getting pretty bummed about how boring the freezer aisle is right now. I needed this kick to keep my going. Thanks for making this one Jeni's!

Verdict?  Amazing

  1. Jeni's are sold at whole foods in my area for around $8 or less, so maybe you should check them out if you think that's a good price for these. I think Whole Foods prices are pretty similar across different regions. You should also be able to get them through Amazon via Whole Foods at the same price.(However, I would try to go directly to the store because ice cream delivery is always iffy)

  2. You've GOT to try the Texas Sheet Cake flavor next! It's a non-dairy pint that can really compete in the main space.

  3. Definitely one of their best from the core lineup. Glad to see some upper tier reviews on the site.

  5. Thanks for keeping this blog going even with so few new products to review! It's a bright spot in my day when I see a new post on Second Scoop, and some days the bright spots are few and far between!

  6. Every ridiculously priced pint I have ever tried of Jeni’s was worth every penny. Glad you have to taken the leap.

  8. Dubba, no offense intended or hopefully taken. Nick trended more towards the premium brands so for me he's missed for those and he was a good review writer overall. I've left comments on looking at more expensive stuff and understand the price barrier. Hopefully as more of those brands become a little more cost effective we see more of them feel. I feel like the second level store brands are a little stagnant.

  9. No worries, I can take it! I know it's always been a bit of a issue (that being my penny pinching ways). $6 is usually my threshold for a pint, and that's only as a one off treat. I will often try to wait til the $6 ones are on sale. I guess I should be grateful that my local prices aren't even higher.

I'm trying to think of who else (super premium) that I am missing right now (of those that I could find on shelves and not necessarily order online).

  10. I'm guessing I would have liked this flavor more if I hadn't previously tried the Ample Hills version. It was so good I bought a whole pint for $12 and did not regret it. I am exceedingly frugal but that's a splurge I'm willing to make.

  11. Shoprite had this one on sale for $6.49 so I finally tried it tonight. You are correct this one is amazing! It reminded me of a Samoa girl scout cookie minus the chocolate. Like yours, my pint was a little freezer burnt on top but it was worth it. The cake pieces reminded me of a pound cake, and I could taste the cream cheese base. This was the first time I've tried an ice cream this expensive, but I'm glad I took your advice!
