Magnum Non-Dairy Sea Salt Caramel Bar

[New for 2020] It was almost a year ago that I tried one of Magnum's non-dairy bars (review here). I went in with low expectations and wound up being impressed by this non-dairy treat. When Unilever offered to send over a free sample of the newest version, I was pretty excited.

Magnum Non-Dairy Sea Salt Caramel Bar
sea salt caramel flavored indulgence
dipped in sweet Belgian chocolate

The packaging still amuses me.

It's a good looking bar and I can't wait to take a bite...

But there is a problem. I don't think the sea salt caramel comes across like they expected, at least not to me. I just don't taste caramel. What do I taste? Honestly? It makes me think of beer, which is extra odd since I don't drink. The tastes reminds me of the way warm beer smells. Wow, Unilever is going to regret sending these to me.

The shell is still tasty, and I still finished the bar, but yeah, the flavor does not come across well at all. I totally expected a sweet caramel flavor to blend with the chocolate and that is not happening here. I can't even accurately describe the flavor (or lack thereof). Bummer.

On Second Scoop: I was hoping these would click a little better on the second try. They aren't terrible, but I still feel like they really missed the mark here. However, I had an amazing thought. What if the filling was peanut butter flavored? With that bit of saltiness + the non-dairy texture + the shell, that would make for an excellent combo --- wait, I forgot their is an almond version. If anyone has it, let us know how it is!

Verdict?  not an improvement
Buy Again?  nope

  1. Wow. Between the artificial banana flavor you detected in your last review and now this "warm beer" essence, I don't know what to think other than you have quite the discernible palate, Dubba. Amazing descriptors. I was looking at this non-dairy dessert's ingredient list and I don't see what "non-dairy" product they opted for in their pseudo-ice cream core, but I did see "pea protein" and if you ever had a protein powder using this as it's main protein source, it definitely has a one-of-a-kind aftertaste that you will automatically detect; it's a hate-it-or-love-it kind of thing. Magnum looks so good, but I think you dissuaded me from giving this Unilever product a try. Thanks for the sacrifice--even if it was freebee--Dubba.

  2. I take it you don't like that protein powder aftertaste?

If these tempted you, just start with the classic version... or maybe try the almond flavor, maybe that's the real star here? (and then let us know how it is)

  4. On other caramel bar news... I know you weren't impressed with the vanilla offering of Haagen Dazs' new soft-dipped bars. I passed over those but was pleasantly surprised with the caramel version. The ice cream inside was dense and creamy, not fluffy, and I got a good amount of caramel goo in each bar. The truffle-y dark shell went with it pretty well. Just something to consider if you're faced with some limited choices these days!

  5. @Anon: ok, at some point I will try it!

@May: ahhhh, I think me and my texture issues are too against the shell at this point to enjoy - but maybe others can start there :)
