Ben & Jerry's Phish Food

Opening question: What's your go-to Ben & Jerry's flavor right now?

So I reviewed the froyo version and the discontinued light version, but apparently I've never officially reviewed regular Phish Food. Well, here we go, and it's a reminder of Ben & Jerry's being at their best.

Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream
chocolate ice cream with gooey marshmallow swirls,
caramels swirls & fudge fish

The swirl is calling

Busy and fun!

This one is delicious in every scoop. You don't even need a big scoop, just get a small scoop with everything on it. The caramel plus the marshmallow plus the rich chocolate base, throw in a chocolate fish here and there and you'll see why this decades old flavor was still their #7 best seller last year.

Good ol' penny test!

So yeah, I had some yesterday and some today and it's really good. I've been so out of sync with B&J's lately but this one has totally clicked with me. The think it's the choice of this particular chocolate base along with the ooey gooey swirls that makes magic happen with every bite. Seriously, don't try to take a giant bite of this one. Just take a small bite and let the flavor combo work it's magic.

On Second Scoop: Nom nom nom.... wait, where did it go? Oh man, I need another one.

Later in 2022, Ben & Jerry's came out with this cool retro packaging to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Phish Food. I kind of wish all of their packaging was this fun because the offcenter ice cream shots kind of drive me nuts on the current packaging.

Verdict?  still a classic
Buy Again?  you bet!

  1. I'm not sure whether to be amused or disturbed that right after I buy Phish Food at the store, I come home and this pops up on your blog. But I know I'm not exciting enough to stalk, so I'll go with amused!

My current go-to B&J is Milk & Cookies. I miss when stores near me carried Vanilla Caramel Fudge, though. Something about the simplicity of the flavor and the generous swirls was just so perfect.

  2. This is probably my 2nd favorite flavor of all time from Ben & Jerry's.

My favorite would be Wavy Gravy...unfortunately it's been in the flavor graveyard for around 20-years, so I don't have high hopes for a comeback. :-(

  3. Phish Food is one of the best. While I can't find it by me right now, Peanut Butter World is my favorite, supposedly, on shelves.

  4. This a favorite, and was so glad to find it available in a non-dairy version!

@Joe: didnt realize PBW was still around actually

@Sophia: their non-dairy lineup is pretty big

    1. They list in their current flavors, and it's not in the Graveyard. But like you, I haven't seen it in stores. Maybe it's limited to Scoop Shops.

  6. With Ben and Jerry's recreating their own flavors to make ice creams with every mix-in and swirl combination possible, as seen with flavors like Totally Unbaked, Chocolate Milk and Cookies, and Peanut Butter Half Baked, Ben and Jerry's should do something similar with Phish food. Instead of fudge shaped fish, they should do peanut butter cups, as the fudge fish is unnecessary since you already have a chocolate component from the base ice cream.

  7. Iunno, I would miss their dark chocolate pop against the sweet swirls :)

  8. Out of curiosity Dubba, do you think Ben and Jerry's is the most consistent brand for #funfactor out there?

  9. HA! Hmmmmm.... at this point in life, it feels like more of baseline or standard more than a #funfactor or #wowfactor.

Honestly, I don't know but that's an excellent question. They are certainly consistent but I feel like other brands are trying to be crazier than they do.

    What does everyone else think?

  10. Peanut Butter World is still around, but it's a Target exclusive (and one of the only reasons I go to Target, despite walking out with a half-full cart any time I do).

  11. Consistent in what sense? In terms of loading the pints with whatever mixins/swirls/etc, I would say yes, and that by being consistent on that they’ve set the bar. My impression is that whether you like the effect or not, you definitely get a sense of the flavors/combos they’re going for.

In terms of consistently innovating with new ingredients/combos, maybe not.

  12. One flavor that I have a hard time finding anymore is their Cinnamon Buns flavor. I used to inhale that flavor.

I hope one day their limited edition Confetti Cake flavor comes back.
