Nancy's Fancy Spiced Stumptown Coffee Gelato

[By Nick] Time for the second review from the free samples that Nancy's Fancy sent me. This time, we'll actually be looking at a gelato!

Nancy's Fancy Spiced Stumptown Coffee Gelato
made with cold brewed Stumptown Coffee

Yes, the name is also the description. Out of all the flavors sent, this might be the one I'm most interested in. Coffee flavors tend to be the same thing over and over again but Nancy's is being a bit creative. Not only is the base spiced (with I don't know what yet) but they're also using cocoa nibs! I can't think of another flavor using them off the top of my head. They're definitely thinking outside the box a little with the one.

Removing the lid, it looks like a typical coffee chocolate chip flavor.

That all changes when you scoop in. First off, let's talk texture since the last one wasn't actually gelato. This stuff doesn't remind me of gelato either. It's not necessarily icy but it's more watery than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, it's still creamy but not super rich.

The flavor of the base makes up for the not-so-gelato texture. The spiced component is cinnamon and I do love me the combo of coffee and cinnamon. They just work so nicely together. The coffee flavor is more robust than others but is tempered a bit by the sweet, spicy cinnamon. I'm not saying spicy as in hot, so don't be scared by that. It's mild but still a bit notable in a good way.

The cocoa nibs are crunchy and filled with some bitter dark chocolate qualities. I quite enjoyed them a lot on their own because I'm that guy who wants the darkest of chocolates possible. The cocoa nibs are a fine mix-in, but just not for this flavor.

You see, mixed with the base, it just tastes weird. The chocolate does not mix with the cinnamon at all. If it was a normal coffee base, things would work. However, they just don't here. The flavors clash and are very unappealing when combined. Such a shame because both the base and mix-ins are excellent but they don't work together one bit.

I'd have a hard time recommending this to even that strong of coffee enthusiasts. It looks like I'm 0 for 2 when it comes to Nancy's line, but don't worry, I have a great feeling about 3 out of the 4 flavors I have left to try. Stay tuned for those reviews!

Verdict?  Excellent separate but gross together
Buy Again?  Nope
