Open Nature White Chocolate Raspberry Gelato

Ok, time for a new brand on the blog, but this isn't some rare premium brand, no, it's actually an all natural store brand from Safeway! But Dubba, I thought Safeway wasn't in your area? Well, Albertsons and Safeway have merged, and Albertsons owns Shaws so now I have a large selection of ice creams, gelatos, froyos, and sorbets to choose from. But the problem is, what do I try first? You look through the selection. You look high, you look low, but then, there's that one that sticks out and just yells "BUY ME!". Well, for me, that flavor is....

Open Nature White Chocolate Raspberry Gelato
(white chocolate gelato with a raspberry swirl)

I do love clear containers but there are no signs of the raspberry swirl unless you look at the bottom side of the container. That's a little disconcerting but it does serve as a reminder that this is a budget friendly store brand, not a high priced premium brand.

I take my first bites and it's very sweet. It definitely has a white chocolate candy vibe to start (with a hint of raspberry in the background). Let's dig deeper.

If you blind folded me I wouldn't know this is gelato. It's easy enough to scoop, but there is this underlying grit too it. Not terrible, but it's throwing me off a little. Thankfully the wonderful sweetness has me quickly scooping for more.

Good news is that the swirl does indeed exist. It's very thin so you'll never be bowled over by raspberry flavor.... but you know what? I think that's a good thing here. This whole treat is like a white chocolate Lindt truffle with a mild raspberry filling and it works really well.

Several of our ice cream friends were kind of so so on the cones in Save Our Swirled (though I loved them), and I think I have a solution for them. It's this gelato.

And now half the pint is gone. I still think I get a little grit, but there is an easy solution for that, it's the quick melting edges and once you dig in to them you'll just keep scooping for more. Man that was good. I had to force myself to stop eating and put the pint back in the freezer. It's just so sweet and wonderful.

Wow, yeah, totally buying that again.

On Second Scoop: So sweet.... must buy more

Verdict?  candy!
Buy Again?  Yes!

  1. Glad you have access to Safeway treats now Dubba! I no longer live anywhere near a Safeway but when I did I often bought their brand of ice cream. They used to have a really large selection and they were almost always very good. Enjoy!

  5. Just bought this at Acme. Worst gelato I have ever had! Flavor is ok but it's grainy and not very smooth. I'll just go back to Hagen Daaz it's always good.

  6. Boy, try their Coconut Gelato Bars. Wonderful, scrumptious flavor (so smooth - definitely no grit) and great bits of coconut. They're heavenly!
