Perry's Peanut Butter Cup Light Ice Cream

[By Nick] I can't be the only one who has days when they just want to eat a ton of chocolate and peanut butter, right? I mean, it's one of the greatest combinations of all-time. Sadly, it's not the healthiest combo, especially when it comes to ice cream. Dubba always preaches moderation and I try to follow those same guidelines. When I saw that Perry's was offering a "perfectly churned" light version on this combo when I was at the Niskayuna Co-op, I knew I had to pick it up just in case I was having one of those days.

Perry's Peanut Butter Cup Light Ice Cream
light chocolate ice cream with peanut butter swirls

While I'd never recommend eating a full 1.5 quart container of ice cream in a sitting (though I'd be lying if I said I haven't before), to put things into perspective, this whole container of Perry's has 8.5 less grams of total fat and 11 less grams of saturated fat as a faux-pint of Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream. I know, I'm comparing apples to oranges here but technically, you could eat the whole container which is over three times more servings than the container of Haagen-Daz and still take in less fat. Sure, there's more calories and such but i'm digging to far into this nutritional comparison than I really need to. Onto the ice cream!

Now as expected, the peanut butter isn't in heavy concentrations throughout the container. However, there's enough involved that you get the beautiful marriage of chocolate and peanut butter in every bite. It's so well incorporated that the base almost has a bit of peanut butter flavor to it as well. The chocolate is a lot better than I was expecting and more of the milk chocolate side of things. The texture is similar to what I encountered with their Creme Brulee, light but not super airy like other flavors in its category. While it's no Haagen-Dazs, it'll surely satify your chocolate peanut butter cravings in whatever dose you see fitting without doing much damage to your waistline. Perry's is two for two with their light offerings which says a lot coming from a guy who loves his super-premium offerings. I see myself grabbing another flavor from the Co-op pretty soon.

Verdict?  A good chocolate and pb fix even for a light ice cream
Buy Again?  When I want mass quanities without Dubba yelling at me for eating all the ice cream in one sitting

  1. Hi Nick. I've been in on O.S.S. (incoincidentally not for "Out of School Suspension", hehe) for a year now and enjoy reading your (everyone's) reviews.

Well this sounds yummy. Thanks for this review. I brake especially for peanut butter chocolate ice creams. "Charlie Brown"- as it was called in the High's ice cream store when I was a youngster- was my first-ever ice cream and stands as my all-time favorite ever since. I live on the West Coast so I doubt I'll see this around here, but if I do, I'll give it a shot.

Note: To date the closest I've tasted to achieving the excellence of High's C.B. is Dreyer's Max variety (though theirs comes with chipped chocolate).

  2. Vocaltaffy, thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I don't believe you'll be finding Perry's in your area. I have reviewed that maxx version you were mentioning but under the Edy's name since I'm on the east coast. http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2013/01/edys-maxx-chocolate-peanut-butter-chunk.html I really enjoyed it as well but they got discontinued here. Is the Dreyer's version still being produced?

  3. Hi Nick,

The last and only time I picked this up was in May of this year (2014), at a Grocery Outlet. I found out about it through your review of the product.

Curious, I bought one faux pint to taste.

The next day I loaded my basket with 2 8-count cases of it at $0.99/pint at the local G.O.

I snapped a shot of my (sniff!) last pint in all its goodness:

The local G.O. still has Dreyer's Peanut Butter Chocolate faux pint at $1.49 even today, but I usually wait for the pint price to drop to $1 or less.

  4. jb3media, I'm just going to respond to all your comments here instead of the other reviews. The maxx line was officially cut at the end of last year which is why you're finding it at grocery outlets. There's still stock they produced that hasn't sold elsewhere and is being put into those stores. If you find them and like them, I'd stock up because chances are you won't be seeing them again.

  5. Nick, what is your favorite ( If you have one ) Choc. PB cup Ice cream... Being a single- I tend to go for Haagen dazs, - But honestly.. and this is the ONLY flavor I will say this about .. Stewarts is my actual favorite... (Other than that .. Stewarts ice cream is Meh to me) Then again, You're a mix in guy .. so you probably go for one with loads of candy and swirls no?

  6. LM, Graeter's Buckeye Blitz is my favorite chocolate pb combo. Sadly, it's not offered around us. As for what you'd have access to, Peanut Butter World from Ben & Jerry's takes it for me. It's an exclusive at Target though.
As for Stewart's, I don't think I've had their chocolate peanut butter flavor. I've always been a lover of crumbs along the mohawk though.
