[New for 2012, at dollar stores in 2013, pints gone for 2014 (4oz cups still available)] Wow, over 10 months without a
sherbet review. Well, it's not like it's ever been a hot market, but Luigi's, yes
Luigi's the Italian ice guys, have got a special new treat for us. And when I say special, I mean only a buck a pint on sale at Shaw's a couple of months ago.
As a fan of Luigi's - and as an even bigger fan of sherbet -- and as a hungry, cheap, penny pinchin', frozen treat lovin' fella -- there's was no way I was leaving the store without these dollar treats.
Are there other flavors? Well there weren't any others at the store, but according to one very tiny picture of
the L uigi's website, there is also a Lime flavor -- ok, they posted
this facebook photo that confirms that there are indeed just those three new flavors for 2012.
Now I originally bought these two mid-afternoon and I actually tried the Raspberry when I got back to my car. It's no
hola fruta sherbet because the cream content is way too low for that. Instead it's a fairly icy sherbet with a mild flavor, but its decent, it's low fat, low cal, and 100% vitamin C. I mean it's not some high end sherbet, but for a buck, yeah, I got a good deal.
Ahhhh, it's blinding!!
(probably should have turned the flash off)
After slowly working my way through the first pint, I finally dug into the orange flavor. It's pretty good. I definitely got a bit of an orange juice / orange cremescicle vibe when I first started. There's also the obligatory mild citrus bite to it as well. Sure, it's a little gritty since it just has a smidge of milk & cream in it, but it's ok in this application. You see, the grit and the bite mixed together force you to take small bites. Basically, they form a very practical low fat treat. It's only 90 calories a serving and usually you only need about one serving and you go "ok, I'm good for the night". Well technically the orange is kind of inspiring the urge for a few pretzel sticks, but that's ok by me.
Neither of these flavors wowed me off my feet, but neither of them really disappointed either. Oh sure I was a little confused on the first few bites of the first pint, but sometimes it takes a minute or two to change gears. This is a classic example of a practical treat. Low cost and low cal yet still satisfying.
Verdict?  A practical and healthy ice cream alternative
Buy Again?  Yup (for those low cal nights)

The lime tasted great as well. Where are they sold now because our dollar store doesn't carry the brand anymore?
ReplyDelete@Sandy: when is the last time you actually saw them? Pretty sure they are discontinued as they are completely off the website now. I would try either Hola Fruta or GaGa as a replacement if you can find them.
ReplyDeleteI just bought some in Santa Ana CA on Bristol St. I bought the lime sherbet but was considering the Edy's mint chocolate custard they had for only 1 dollar for half gallon (now that's deal). If I bought the custard I would eat the whole container and regret it back at work :(
ReplyDeleteThey alive and well at the Berlin and Meriden, CT Dollar stores!!
