Arctic Zero Cookies & Cream Review

I headed back to Roche Bros last week in the hopes of finding that elusive B&J flavor that just came out, but instead I found Arctic Zero! There was a mere half dozen pints of cookies and cream buried in a pile of Gifford's ice cream. I know I won't like it, but I can't help myself. I grab a pint, head to the checkout... and then wait several minutes for them to figure out what the price is.

Arctic Zero Cookies and Cream

Ok, we are in the car and it's time for some taste testing! The funny thing here is that you see 150 calories and you start thinking PER SERVING. No no my friend, PER PINT. That's -37- calories per serving, and none of them are from fat.

Wow, where do I start? First, I wasn't expecting it to be brown (chalk it up to decades of expecting the speckle). Second, just look at the way it scooped! It doesn't look anything like ice cream, it looks like Italian ice. Actually, if you want to get more specific, it looks like wet sand.

For something they bill as "an ice cream-like treat" or "an ice cream replacement", this definitely isn't what I had in mind. It's my own fault really. I knew this stuff would be a shock, but now I've made it worse by picking a non-conforming flavor... sorry, I don't know how to say it. Vanilla is white, chocolate is brown, strawberry is pink. That would have been straight forward. Looking at this immediately tells my brain "this is gonna suck".

So I take my first bite and it is very strange to me. It is indeed reminiscent of Italian ice, except I always do fruit flavors with my Italian ice. This is going to take a whole lot of getting use to.... Disclaimer: I took a few more bites and noticed a weird tasting building up in my mouth, so I flipped to some Gifford's to wash it down.

On Second Scoop:  I know my taste buds tends to be miswired from time to time, but I swear I'm eating a caramel flavored salt lick here.... this junk is going to take some serious getting use to... oh, who am I kidding, it's going in the trash. Oh it feels so weird in my mouth. I tried telling myself the other day was a fluke, but it's not. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I want my four bucks back.

Verdict?  disgusting
Buy Again?  several people seem to think I got a bad pint, so I don't know...

  1. I'd say that it looks like churned Yoo-Hoo, but that may be too positive.

  2. I'm not a fan of the cookies and cream hahaha I think it looks like wet concrete. Actually though,it looks like you got an icy pint, the stuff is actually pretty damn creamy. You should try the mint chocolate cookie or coffee, they are AMAZING.

  3. I've had both the vanilla and the chocolate. The vanilla isn't too bad, but the chocolate is a miss.

Your pint does look icy and the color isn't very appealing.

  4. hmmm, well this particular pint did come from an old school open freezer, so maybe that didn't help.... (yeah, still to afraid to waste another 4 bucks, if I could even find another flavor that is)

  5. yeah like i said in my tweet it's possible you got a bad pint. I'd say give a different version a try. I'd say give the chocolate peanut butter one a go.

  6. I've had the icy problem with these before, too. But when you get a normal pint they really are very creamy and tasty :) I eat it all the time. Coffee, Vanilla Maple, and Cookies & Cream are my favorites!

  7. This is by far the worst flavor IMO, I've actually come to enjoy the coffee and vanilla maple.

  8. It's so overpriced! I know the calories are low, but it would be cheaper to just freeze a protein shake.

Thanks for testing; you really took one for the team!

  9. Ok, I tried it in a shake and it still didnt work for me. It kind of had a malty taste to it. I tried to force myself to drink it, but then thought "why bother?"

the only funny part was watching all the air escape and form a very bubbly faux-shake.

  11. Never tried the cookies and cream but the chocolate peanut butter is amazing… Chocolate is okay, didn't like the vanilla--> too sweet, and the strawberry is more like water ice instead of "ice cream"

  12. I was given a free pint of this stuff at Whole Foods because I told the man who was stocking the shelves that I have been interested in trying this product for quite some time but never decided to do it due to the high price of it. So, he was kind enough to let me take a free one home.

After trying this, I am so glad that I got this for free because I would have been tremendously upset had I paid over $4 for this. I let this sit out at room temperature until it achieved a creamy texture but this tastes NOTHING like cookies and cream. All I could taste was a weird tropical fruity taste with a hint of sweetness which I didn't like at first but ended up growing on me as I ate my way through the pint. They should have changed the name of this flavor it has absolutely NO flavor comparable to "cookies and cream". So, I was extremely disappointed, yet relieved that I didn't pay a cent. And,I won't be fooled into trying any of the others.

    1. did he give you a coupon or something? that was mighty nice of him!

    2. He put a sticker on the pint for a free sample so that the cashier was aware, so I assume that offering free samples is nothing uncommon to Whole Foods! I suggest that the next time you see a worker stocking the shelves to get in a conversation with him or her and ask if he or she has tried a certain product because sometimes that person will be generous enough to give you a free product!

  13. So, I ended up trying other flavors - chocolate peanut butter, chocolate, coffee, and maple vanilla - despite disliking the cookies and cream flavor. Here is my brief review for each:

    1) the chocolate flavor tastes like a breakfast carnation/slimfast shake. I would buy it again if I ever wanted something different or if I was in the mood for a carnation shake, which is almost never.

    2) the chocolate peanut butter flavor should be renamed to "chocolate" because there is no peanut butter flavor detected in taste and no peanut butter listed in the ingredients. How can arctic zero market a product as "peanut butter" when it has no peanut butter whatsoever listed in the ingredients, or any peanut-derivative listed in the ingredient? They should be fined for false advertisement. In terms of taste, it's better than the chocolate flavor but it still tastes like a diet shake, kind of like fat-free chocolate milk.

    3) The coffee flavor and vanilla maple flavors are outstanding and they taste the best when completey melted because they are sweeter, thicker, and taste like a thick shake. The vanilla maple was really impressive in terms of sweetness and vanilla flavor, and the coffee reminded me a lot of stonyfield's nonfat "gotta have java" frozen yogurt, currently my new favorite flavor. These 2 are worth the price and I will continue rebuying them.

For these products, you really need to drink them instead of consuming them as you would with ice cream because when frozen they are less sweet and icy. When melted, they are sweet and make a nice milk shake without the guilt.

    1. Hey stride, I've tried all of those flavors and have to agree with you on all points. These are marketed as frozen protein shakes so that's really how they should be consumed. I think I need to repurchase them sometime to give my take on them seeing as I'm sure Dubba has had his fill of them=p

  14. I just tried the key lime flavor. Gah!!!!! Did I really just spent over $4 for this? I just sitting in my freezer collecting ice crystals. The stuff is nasty. ZERO flavor. Even LESS smell. You know when you open up a pint of ice cream and you can smell it? This had nothing. It has a light green shade with teeny tiny speckles of graham cracker. Supposedly it was CHUNKY. Please! The stuff with total crap.

  15. 4 years later: No you didn't get a bad pint. I bought a pint today because Halo Top only had chocolate. Let me tell you, Artic Zero Key Lime Pie is downright nasty!

That was my first and last container. It was so bad it made almost everything else I was eating nasty as well; even my donut!
