Turkey Hill Whoopie Pie
Limited Edition Ice Cream Review

[New for 2011] Actually, review isn't fair, ice cream inhalation would be more accurate. Between the fact that I haven't had ice cream in a few days mixed with the fact that the ice cream was still soft from the ride home, it's no wonder a small bowl of this limited edition ice cream didn't last more than two minutes.

Just shy of a month ago, Nick was the first to tweet a pic of Turkey Hill's newest creation, Limited Edition Whoopie Pie ice cream. Who knew Lancaster was the home of the original Whoopie Pie? Ok, technically Maine wants to lay claim to this too. Look, the Penn Dutch don't mess around with food. Seriously? have you had shoo fly pie? and who rocks the American pretzel world like the Penn Dutch? Exactly. Don't make me go on... seriously, dont make me go on, I'll just get hungry again.

Sorry, sidetracked. Whoopie Pie ice cream is Chocolate ice cream with whoopie pie pieces and creamy filling swirl. I saw it for the very first time today, but even though the freezer is full of (melted?) ice cream, I happily picked up a container and headed home.

Ooooooooooooooo, look at all that cream filling swirl!
Oh, it looks like liquid Marshmallow!
...must...
...RESIST...
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM

and that was the end of that puddle of swirl. Ohhhh, so dangerously sweet, almost too much, yet so sugary in it's goodness. I can't say I recommend doing that on a regular basis, but I have to test each ingredient in the name of science! Actually, to be honest, it reminds me alot the swirl in H-D Rocky Road. Both are sweet, both are very liquidy, but instead of a marshmallow flavor, this is distinctly more of a cream filling flavor.

High on a sugar rush, I plowed through my small bowl like there was no tomorrow. I can't say that I particularly tasted the whoopie pie bits, but their texture was unmistakeable. Have no fear Nick, this definitely isn't just some cake bits thrown in for "fun", these are indeed whoopie pie bits.

Last of all is our ice cream base. It's the nice chocolate ice cream base that we've all come to depend on over the years. Overall it was tasty though I am curious to see how it tastes once it has refrozen... but that's gonna have to wait til tomorrow. Right now, it's time to enjoy the fact that cable is working again!

On Second Scoop: I went back for my second scoop and after 48 hours this ice cream was still quite soft. The swirl is so sugary, I really shouldn't be surprised. That said, the ice cream was now just solid enough that the whoopie pie bits spread out their flavor much more evenly. There was no mistaking the very sweet whoopie pie flavor. Nice job throwing out something different Turkey Hill!

2012 Update: This is the new 2012 packaging. Whoopie pie came back as a limited flavor in 2013 & 2014 as well.

  1. Good to hear this is a solid flavor. Ever since I tweeted you the photo I've been trying to get a hand on this ice cream. Every time I look for it, it seems to be out of stock. Hopefully it's just really popular and not being replaced with a different limited edition flavor. I'm jealous of you have cable as well. It's still not back on here in Upstate, Ny.

  3. I was excited to try this since B&J's Making Whoopie was sent to the graveyard. I didn't get a distinct Whoopie flavor until I got a glob of the marshmellowy goodness. B&J still did it better but this def isn't bad. Reminds me of a sweater Chocolate Marshmellow ice cream.

  6. the bad news is that I don't usually get these limited flavors til the end of the cycle, so if you see it, make sure you grab it!

i also hope the swirl continues to be plentiful since it ties everything together. (never had the B&J version)

  8. Dubba I found it today at ShopRite! This is def a good one! I love how sweet the swirl is and those are def whoopie pie pieces not just chocolate cake bits. I did resist the urge to eat the whole swirl which is what I usually do and later pay for it!

  11. We always found it in Sept. up north. Now that we live in North Carolina we have been calling all the stores but no one has it or even heard of it! Frustrated and almost ready to order from my sister in law in New York.

  12. I know this is an older post, but I HAVE to find this ice cream. I only hope it's not too late, being December.

The Turkey Hill website doesn't list the time of availability for the Whoopie Pie ice cream. Does anyone happen to know what time of year this comes out?
