Rocky Road Klondike Bar Review

[New for 2011] I was really gunning for a slice of Papa Gino's pizza, but somehow I convinced myself to save a buck or two and head down to Shaw's to grab a pint of something new and tasty. Unfortunately there wasn't anything particulary exciting at this Shaws, so I paced back and forth a bit before snagging the new Rocky Road Klondike bars. Let's be honest, I have trouble ignoring anything with Rocky Road in the title, so let's give it a try.

The description is chocolate and marshmallow flavored light ice cream and milk chocolate flavored coating and almonds. 6 bars, 4oz a piece, on sale for $2.50. Looks interesting enough.

Wow, it's been over two years since since I had a klondike bar!

The bits are flatter than I expected, but I should have known better

And here's the fluffy insides exposed for all to see. I say fluffy because this stuff has a high air content and offered minimal resistance as I took every bite. This is not a good thing, but more importantly, you need to know that the marshmallow is running the show here. As I took my first bite, I got a big whiff of marshmallow. The taste doesn't seem to take a break either. Sure, it's rocky road, but it's rocky road with way too much marshmallow and it totally ruined it for me. The almond bits add some crunch to the shell, but that is not the same as the thud or the flavor you would get from whole almonds in a typical rocky road.

You know, you don't even get that good klondike vibe you get from most of their treats because the marshmallow is overpowering everything. The shell is literally there, but the flavor was a nonfactor for me. The almonds are a nonfactor beyond the shell crunch. The treat isn't even filling because it's so airy. I'm really disappointed with this one. I mine as well go eat some chocolate covered marshmallows because this "treat" didn't even hold enough cold to take me to a frozen, creamy place. Booooo.

Verdict? fail.... epic fail
Buy again? nope

  1. This is disappointing to hear. I've had a box of these in my freezeer for awhile now but I just never got around to having one yet. I think I'll try one soon to see if they're as big of a fail as you say. Great review like always though.

  2. I tried these on Saturday night and was also super disappointed :( I liked the marshmallow ice cream but that was about it...I was hoping you'd review these!

  3. The more I think about these, the more disappointed I become, and that doesn't happen to often. I'm thinking it's because of the Rocky Road name.

@Nick: definitely let us know what you think.

  4. I did give it a try earlier and I like it but name is very misleading. If it was called like chocolate covered marshmallow or something among those lines I think I'd be less disappointed since it doesn't live up to it's name at all. Mine had a nice crunch though and at times did taste just like a marshmallow that was just dipped into chocolate fudge. As a treat by itself I liked it but it's name makes it a failure.

  6. I just tried these and thought they were just okay. It definitely satisfies the sweet tooth and it definitely satisfies the ice cream craving. My biggest problem is that I couldn't taste the marshmallow as most were able to. The ice cream itself tasted like a less chocolately version of their chocolate ice cream that is in the Double Chocolate Klondike Bar. I tried eating the ice cream without the shell and still couldn't taste the marshmallow. I even did a side-by-side taste test comparison to the Double Chocolate Klondike Bar and the only different was a less chocolately ice cream. I would have preferred this to be an all chocolate ice cream with mini marshmallows liberally spread throughout. These bars aren't bad, they just don't have anything impressive about them for me to repurchase them.

  7. I love the Rocky Road Klondike!!! They are so “creamy”!!! All the ingredients blend in so wonderful, the chocolate, marshmallow and the nuts sooooo dreamy!!! It is just as great as Hagan’s, and Turkey Hill’s bucket of Rocky Road ice cream!!! My problem is I can’t find Rocky Road Klondike bars any where😥☹️😪!!! I live in Johnstown, PA. Ever since the pandemic (Covid 19), it disappeared 😱. Do they still make it?
