Hudsonville Malted Milk Ball Ice Cream

[New for 2021] Well, check another ice cream company off of the to-try list*. I finally made it back to Hannaford and while the selection is still small, they are offering a few more Hudsonville flavors now. I almost went with brownie batter cookie dough, but instead I went with....

and a ribbon of milk chocolate

I love that seal!

This gives me vanilla fudge vibes.

And now those vibes are even stronger!

I dig in and immediately crunch in to a malted milk ball. I'm not sure how I feel about this actually. Now for context, I was a big fan of Whoppers as a kid but they've gotten very cheap tasting over the last few decades.

I continue to quickly scoop through my serving. Now Hudsonville is a mainstream ice cream (based in Michigan), so it's not unexpected that it's not super dense and also a bit.... I don't want to say gummy, but you can tell there are stabilizers in the mix to support the lower density. If you want that said in technical terms, this is a third less dense than Ben & Jerry's (87g vs 130g).

It's funny how some spots have melted extremely quick. The good part is those spoonfuls make me really want to turn this one in to a milkshake in the very near future.

So, this will sound dumb, but I was expecting more malt flavor and less maltball flavor.  No, expecting is the wrong word. Hoping is the right word. I wanted a throwback to three twins chocolate malt flavor. Instead, it reminds me much more of the Whoopers Breyers Blasts! from several years ago.

This isnt a bad ice cream, I'm just not in love with it by any means. Do I wish the swirl wasn't here? Kind of. It's not that it's super strong, but I would like to try it without the swirl. The MMBs are tasty enough, but maybe a little too tasty? They are throwing me out of the moment. This is meant to be a fun flavor, and it is, I just think today I was looking for something a bit more classic.

On Second Scoop: So... Many.... Malted Milk Balls! You know how sometimes you get less mix-ins on your second and third scoopings? Yeah, not here. If anything, I feel like the quantity doubled on this serving. I feel like I got at least one (if not two) per scooping. This ice cream delivers what it promises, so I can't really complain!

*Foot note: technically I had Hudsonville ice cream when I tried the little debbie ice creams, but I mean my opening statement  in the sense of trying their official branded products.

Verdict?  busy!

  1. oh, 3 twins memories, now I always was confused by that name, cause are three twins not triplets? or, if there were 3 actual twins, are we talking 6 people, or 3 twins whose respective twins are not in on the deal?

  2. I'm a big fan of Hudsonville, my fav are their Pb cup and Traverse Cherry fudge. Reminds me of the old school Edys Choc Cherry. I tried the Brownie Batter and Strawberry Cheesecake flavors and was disappointed so I'm glad you didn't go that route.

  3. all three of the founders were twins :)

  4. I also like Hudsonville Ice Creams...They are one of the better non-premium ice cream brands out there. You should try Tillamook's version of this flavor:

I like booth equally, but for different reasons...the Tillamook version is smoother and richer with chunks of soft chocolate as opposed to the crunchy malt balls. I actually like how busy the Hudsonville version is.

  5. This reminds me of Schweddy Balls!!

  6. Hudsonville Triple Peanut Butter Cup is super fun - a nice peanut butter base with a salty peanut butter swirl and mini peanut butter cups. All the elements are fairly good and the swirl and mix-ins are plentiful. You are right that there is something odd about the texture - a bit gummy and it melts in odd little pockets. Still a nice scoop!

  7. I wasn't happy with the cheap tasting malt balls. I like the Whoppers Brand malted milk balls, and I don't think these malt balls were Whoppers. They taste like the off brand that you get at Easter, the cheaper brand. But other than that, the ice cream is smooth and Creamy, and tasty. I love the malt flavor in just the ice cream.
