Edy's Cake & Cookie Fantasy Frozen Yogurt

[2017-2018] While Edy's (Dreyer's) first release this year was those three limited (and underwhelming) cookie dough flavors, they appear to have now added 4 more permanent froyo flavors. A line up that gets little love suddenly gets four new flavors. Did someone go "let's distract them while we quietly yank the frozen custard line up from existence"? Whatever the reason, we now have Caramel Praline Perfection (almonds), Peanut Butter Overload (peanuts), Salted Caramel Pretzel (potentially cross contaminated), and the only one safe to bring home:

Opened. That's bright!

It's certainly pretty and it looks even better in my dish.

I take a full size bite and am bowled over with the potency of what I have decided to snack on. Wow. People were talking about tasting cheese and I think it's just this potent froyo funk that smacks you upside the tastebuds. Ok, I know I can take another bite. I can do this!

This certainly is a hard one to subscribe. It almost has the bite of a strong sherbet or sorbet.

The cookie dough bits are about the size of a pea and I just ate four of them. Yeah, that's an odd aftertaste they pack. They kind of taste like peas actually. Like you tastes peas, then sugar cookie for a millisecond, then back to peas again. Peas may not be the exact thing, but it's good enough to describe the weirdness.

Yeah, this one is weird, but maybe it would be ok-ish with more cookie crumbs? I think it's begging to be in a sundae but whatever I put this on will help cut how potent it is. I don't want to say it's straight out disgusting, but I can see why so many people don't like it. Both the key lime pie and the old black cherry flavor were very potent so I guess I shouldn't have expected anything different here.

On Second Scoop: I was talking to my daughter last night and she goes "that pink stuff is gross". She did follow up with the fact that it's not as bad if you mix it with something else, but obviously she is not a fan. I threw my second scoop into a sundae and it definitely helped balance things out. I'm kind of curious to see how long it takes to finish this container. I don't foresee trying the other flavors anytime soon, but if you do, let us all know what you think of them. I am curious if they will be as equally bold (maybe we can convince Nick to try one of them for us).

Verdict?  very potent
Buy Again?  nope

  1. Should have trusted your last Dreyers review on the Oatmeal Cookie Dough, but I might try this one, more for the weirdness than because I think I will actually like it (Red Velvet was everywhere before Salted Caramel was).

Disappointed custard is gone; the Snickerdoodle's swirl could be really nice (Dreyer's his hit or miss on mix-ins for me); maybe the Breyer's Cinnamon Swirl will be OK.

  2. I don't know why, but I have the strange urge to make a milkshake made of this one and what's left of the twinkie ice cream in my freezer.

If you do try it, please check back in and let us know what you think.

  3. What a weird concept for a flavor...

  4. I must admit that I really like this one. I like the mix of the cookies with the cake. The red velvet + sugar cookie flavor mixed together works for me - I would love to see a company actually make a sugar cookie based ice cream.

The biggest highlight though is the cookie crumble - very tasty, especially for a frozen yogurt flavor.

  5. @Tom: sugar cookie ice cream is rare but it does exist and several companies have taken a run at it like Blue Bell, Homemade, Blue Bunny, Perry's, etc, but I don't know if there are any active (non-limited) flavors using it.
