[New for 2024] I bought this because it feels like forever since I've had Van Leeuwen in the freezer. Also, "ice cream cake".

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Cake Ice Cream
birthday cake ice cream with dark chocolate cream-filled cookies and swirls of blue frosting
Wait, after reading that description, it's more like birthday cake cookies and cream then ice cream cake ice cream? man, now I feel bad for letting this one sit in the freezer for months!

There's plenty of frosting at the top, and boy is it sweet!

The frosting is also a bit shatter-y when it first gets out of the chest freezer (HA!)

It just looks like cookies and cream when you get down a bit further. I had to check the archives to verify that I had there regular C&C flavor almost three years ago (review here).
The frosting swirl has melted (because it's summer!), so it's sweetness is mixing with everything else. I'm not precisely sure how to describe it other than to say that you've probably had a similar dense frosting swirl in other flavors. It's a solid, sugary thing (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).
I cant say this reminds me of ice cream cake. I'm enjoying it and all, but ice cream cake means something very different to me (and probably most of you).
It's got that typical van leeuwen dense texture that I seem to get in every pint from them.
It's certainly fun, but I would just give it a different name. Birthday Cookies & Cream maybe? Though I guess it could use a bit more cookie wafer crumbs for that.
It would make for a fun but sweet milkshake... I should have bought two faux pints I guess!
Ok, I shared part of this with my wife (who agreed it's sweet), and I'm tempted to finish it, but I'll save the last bit for tomorrow.
On Second Scoop: Yeah, this one is a bit too sweet for my liking. The swirl is fun for sure, but it's just all a bit much. I am tempted to buy it again, but I would then mix it with something else when I put it in my cup or bowl.
Verdict? oh so sweet
Buy Again? probably?
Buy Again? probably?
I LOVED this flavor. I got the ice cream birthday cake, because I used to make chocolate cake with frosting and serve it with ice cream for my mom (on her request - she doesn't think cake is complete without ice cream unless it's my carrot cake).
ReplyDeleteYour mom sounds like a wise woman.
DeleteI'm torn........................
ReplyDeleteI haven't had good experiences with this brand from a retail perspective but this look like my ice cream type and the price would be 1/2 if Whole Foods has it in stock during the sale.......
You know you want to try that swirl!
DeleteI cream cake should have cookie crunch (not cookies and cream!) and a dense fudge swirl. They skipped the best parts!
DeleteDubba you know me too well. That swirl was calling me. I went to WF yesterday but they didn't have it so I picked up the Ooey Gooey Buttercake because I must try any available version of that flavor.
DeleteI found the Ice Cream Cake at Sprouts this morning :)
Nice!
DeleteSlight update:
ReplyDeleteTried the VL Ooey Gooey Buttercake last night. Texture was not an issue like it has been for me before. That said it was a lesser version of the Jeni’s version. The Jeni’s version doesn’t have true OGBC cake pieces to me but the other elements between the base and caramel make it a good overall pint. VL’s cake pieces came across more like semi-soggy blondie pieces and the caramel was pretty faint.
A miss in book. For a very specific flavor I wouldn’t recommend. 🤷🏾♂️
