7-Eleven Ice Cream - Birthday Cake and Brookie Dough

Oh my gosh, it's been **6 years** since I've reviewed a pint of 7/11 ice cream! See, the downside of working from home is that you lose a lot of daily diversity in your life. For example, I can't stop at 7/11 on the way to work anymore. However, I was returning from an early morning drive when I passed by one that doesn't usually have a very good selection, but they did have a 2 for $10 sale. They had pints of strawberry banana and banana cream pie (sorry, but no thank you), and they also had...

Seven Select Birthday Cake Ice Cream
Seven Select Brookie Dough Ice Cream

Does 7-Eleven still have the double cookie dough flavor? Hmmm, ok, they are still showing the old pint design on their website. Anyone know when these new pints came out? Based on a few minutes of internet searching, it seems like this is a fairly recent change.

I know I would usually break this in to two reviews, but why wait? Also, disclaimer, I only have the one ice cream "chiller", so the softer brookie dough got to ride home in that while the more frozen birthday cake had to settle for just hiding in my lunch bag. It was a bit soft by the time I got home but it is what it is. Ok, let's room the pint seals and see what we got.

They look a little cheap at first glance.

The swirl also makes this one look a little freezer burned at first glance too.

I want brookie dough but I go cake first. It's a fairly strong cake flavor... oh, I got some chocolate swirl on that second bite. I prefer my cake flavored ice cream sans chocolate for the most part. Ahhh, yeah, chocolate is messing with my perception. See, I was going to say "I don't know if the cake flavor seems artificial or not" but then the chocolate fudge-like swirl kicks in and I'm thinking more about the Boston Cream Pies that we used to buy from the grocery store (I assume this is still a thing, I ate many of these as a kid).

Ha, I cant get away from the chocolate. Oh well. It's fun enough for now, but let's flip to the other pint.

I start by eating the vanilla by itself. There's something weird about it (texture wise mainly).

Wow, it's hard going from McConnell's amazing caramel swirl to 7/11's caramel swirl.... it kind of has a soapy consistency.... and flavoring... ok, mostly kidding on that second part. [as someone who can still have texture issues with food on occasion, the thinness of the swirl really throws me off]

Deep breath. Need a reset. I apologize for going too negative. Let's try getting everything on the spoon at once.... doh, missed, trying again....

That giant spoonful had a big cookie dough chunk, a bit of chocolate, ice cream, and swirl. Yeah, that was a pretty tasty bite, but there's still something weird going on with the texture of these.

The chocolate swirl is getting in the mix too. It adds a bit of Hershey's syrup punch to everything.

The tiny brownie bits dont really do anything, but they dont really hurt anything either.

So, if I was hungry, yes, I would consider eating this ice cream if it was on sale. The scoops with both swirls do have some fun (if not imperfect) flavoring to them. That said, I do feel justified in not keeping up with the goings on of 7-Eleven ice cream because apparently I haven't missed much since the old days.

On Second Scoop: The biggest #funfactor is when the chocolate swirl hits the caramel swirl and really gives the spoonful a sweet, flavorful blast. The cookie dough hasnt been a huge factor (since there isnt a ton of it for one thing), but it is appreciated when it pops up. Unfortunately the caramel runs out and the pint gets fairly boring at the end. As for the cake, it continues to feel like two different flavors as the bites with chocolate are very different from the bites without. Maybe that will amuse you, or maybe that will annoy you, but now you know before buying.

Verdict?  not bad, not great
Buy Again?  maybe some other flavors

  1. When they first came out I was impressed by the quality. They had an excellent s’mores and lemon meringue pie flavor but they’ve been discontinued. I’m curious if the banana flavor is as good as it used to be.

  2. I agree with the commenter that 7-Select ice cream used to be some of the greats—the salted caramel truffle, double cookie dough, moose tracks, mint cookie, a malt one, a cookie butter one—but it seems they all disappeared during the pandemic, and when I saw a comeback with the bday cake flavor, I was stoked and then disappointed too. I've been tempted to try the chocolate lava cake pint that came out recently, but the price was also jacked up.

  3. Good discussion. We don't have 7-Eleven in the Atlanta area so I've only had these a few times over the years when I was in Texas. I definitely remember people rating them highly previously but with the discontinued flavor and possibly change in quality its not the same :(
