Haagen-Dazs Cookies & Cream Ice Cream
Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

In my 2021 quest to collect all of the new Haagen-Dazs lids, I found two more at my local Hannaford (Food Lion to some of you). Let me jump start this review by saying that the vanilla chocolate chip is so much better than their take on Cookies & Cream.

Why is it so bland? I mean, I know WHY it's bland, but why did they go this way? I know HD tends to just do things well and rely on that (and it works most of the time), but I keep getting bored and putting this one back in the freezer.

This C&C would be super easy to fix, just put crumbs in the base. You know what? Maybe that's why you don't see this one at a ton of grocery stores = because it's boring and no one re-purchases it. (sure, my picture probably makes it look good, but let me tell you, it was all downhill from that photo). Oh, funny side note: I didn't have an official review of this one, but as soon as I took a bite, I was thinking "yeah, I remember how terribly boring this one is".

There is something about the way that these particular chocolate chips manage to transform every bite of the ice cream in to something more special than your average chocolate chip ice cream. Let's be honest, chocolate chip ice cream is about as old fashion as you can get (outside vanilla or chocolate), and it's easy to think "I'm so very bored of this flavor", but here there is that completeness to the flavor profile that keeps you scooping.

I could probably finish this pint, but then I'll be sad that there's none for later.

On Second Scoop: I finished the chocolate chip pint before taking another picture. Whoops! I dig their take on this classic flavor. As for the C&C, it kind of sat there until I turned it in to a boring milkshake (I say boring because I didn't have an Oreo crumbs to throw in).

Verdict?  one good, one bad
Buy Again?  yes for the chocolate chip, no way for C&C

  1. HD chocolate chip is my mom's favorite ice cream ever. It is getting harder and harder to find vanilla-based chocolate chip in stores and next to impossible to find a decent version.

  2. Don't you find these new lids almost impossible to take off? It feels like each will cut through my fingertips before I can separate it from the container.

  3. Sorry, I've gone through two dozen of them and that thought has never crossed my mind :(

  4. I know a little off topic but have you tried Acme ice creams yet? A new super duper premium ice cream that has gone major grocery store at least in the Seattle area. I have never seen a 0% overrun ultra premium with no air at all. It is the densest ice cream by weight I believe is out there. To give you an idea, a faux pint (14 oz) has 1400 calories or more. The butterfat percentage is the highest Ive seen.

  5. Looks like I'm on the wrong side of the country for Acme Valley ice cream. Maybe some day! https://www.acmevalleyicecream.com/

  6. I completely agree with your take on Cookies & Cream. After one spoonful, I keep putting it back in the freezer. Not horrible but one of their most disappointing. I've been following your blog for years, about once a month, but I've also kept my own mini-reviews on my phone even before that. Every day is a little better with a little ice cream.
