Ben & Jerry's Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake

2020 Note: This flavor no longer has truffles branding (not positive when it disappeared). Please note that the current recipe had more sodium and a few other changes.

[New for 2018] Alrighty, truffle shuffle time! There are 3 new truffle flavors from Ben & Jerry's this year. I really wanted the chocolate shake one, but my choices were either Chillin' the Roast or...

Ben & Jerry's Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake Truffles Ice Cream
caramel cheesecake ice cream with
graham cracker-covered cheesecake truffles & chocolate cookie swirls

Kind of looks like a yellow cookies & cream flavor. I have a couple of tiny bites as I prep an instagram picture and I like them. It's not leaning caramel or cheesecake in these early bites.

I dig in and I like it ofcourse. Ben & Jerry;s is always best when sticking to what they know. It's a little surprising at how big the graham cracker covered cheesecake truffles are and if you eat one then ofcourse you will be thinking a lot more about cheesecake than caramel. (you can see it in the picture right? It's that giant white chunk at twelve o'clock in the scooped shot above)

I like the swirls as well. They don't stand out like the salty Turkey Hill version and instead help keep everything in check as well as round out the flavor profile.

I expected a balanced pint and I got it. Cheesecake really isn't something I crave daily but it's nice to have once in a while. The caramel worked well too, it's not too burnt or sweet or anything else. I'll have to get more specific on the second scooping.

On Second Scoop: Flavors like this can usually be summed up in one word: "Nice". I know it might sound a little mundane, but it's a good way to describe a quality ice cream that has a bunch of components that don't fight and just work well together. Sure, you could argue that one of the components should stand out more, which is fine, but don't let that override the fact that it's a pleasant ice cream that does what it intends to do. It's nice, not crazy.

Verdict?  nice
Buy Again?  maybe

  1. Our stores are opposite. I can only find the chocolate shake flavor. I have only tried a couple of bites so far - I liked it, but it didn't blow me away.

I also found the new limited batch S'mores flavor. The base is disappointing; it doesn't taste like marshmallow. The swirls of cookie and graham cracker are good - but I wouldn't call it a S'mores ice cream.

I am curious to try the cheesecake flavor. It sounds like it is more of the same - good but not amazing.

  2. I too didn't get much of a caramel flavor from the base. If not for the description, I wouldn't even have known it was a component. That said, this was a quality flavor. The graham cracker and cookie crumbs made for a good contrast, and the cheesecake ice cream was faithful. I just wish they could use it in their Strawberry Cheesecake pints. The base for that was always a bit weak.

  3. Random question and a suggestion...

It's great that you review do many flavors and try out the new stuff (it's fun to read and helpful for us readers/fellow ice cream lovers) but do you ever miss certain old flavors and just bring able to re-eat them as much as you want? I have my favorites and can't imagine not having them frequently! (But I guess maybe that is one reason I would not be a good reviewer!)

Are there any you can't resist going back to, even if it means not reviewing new products as quickly? You rate if you'd buy again but do you??

Suggestion: any way to have a post just for random/general questions so they don't get lost if not specific to a review? I know maybe you don't want too many general questions but given your many years of blogging, you can provide info)

  4. @Anon: I found the chocolate shake flavor about a week later, the review should be up soon, have a few more bites because I feel it gets better with each bite, at least in regards to the base

@Deb: I've actually tried that a few times but it winds up getting ignored. I really do wish I had an easier means for random thoughts and questions rather than them getting lost of whatever review was posted last.

as for buying things again, in general I will wait til the season calms down before going back to stuff (unless it clicks with my family in which case I get help finishing off my re-purchases). That said, I do mention from time to time that Turkey Hill all natural is basically my go to night time snack rather than diving in to a heavier super premium right before bed. I just actually had myself a nice little serving of their all natural chocolate chip flavor.

  5. I finally found this. It's not amazing - but it is really good. I think it's worth trying. I didn't love the chocolate malt at first, but I think I prefer it over this one. I haven't seen the coffee flavor yet, but I'm not a coffee person, so I am not interested in it.

I did find the caramel cookie light flavor the other day, and was very disappointed in it. It's almost flavorless. I'd rather eat less of the good stuff.

  6. I really wanted to like this one. For me, the truffles absolutely ruined the experience. I found them sour with a horrible aftertaste. I love cheesecake, and obviously a little sourness is par for the course, but this was bad enough that I didn't eat the truffles and just enjoyed the base (which was quite pleasant).

  7. any chance you got a refrozen pint? they definitely shouldn't have been sour. Ewwwwww.

  8. Omg same here...I was beginning to think there was something wrong with the ice cream! The truffle aftertaste was horrible. My husband said the same thing. We couldn’t eat them.
