Blue Bunny Spiced Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

When my local Walmart finally got the new Holi-doodle flavor, they FINALLY got tonight's flavor as well (unfortunately it looks like I won't get to try Cinnamon Apple Pie this year). Now I know the pumpkin season is past both literally (farm wise) and figuratively (grocery store wise), but I rarely say no to a description that includes the word graham. Ok, time to put on my #VotePumpkin shirt and dig in to....

Blue Bunny Spiced Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream
Spiced pumpkin ice cream with swirls of marshmallow and graham crust

No signs of the swirls or mix-ins, but it does smell excellent.

I had to scoop down twice and still not that much swirl yet.

I take my first bite and am underwhelmed. I take a few more bites and realize that it's more spice than pumpkin, and that always makes me a little sad. I'm not saying it's bad out of the gate, it's just that I try to lean towards flavors that are pumpkin, then spice, not the other way around.

Yeah, this really is a mellow ice cream in some respects. I'm actually kind of shocked. In a way, it's kind of flavorless. Some of these bites I am taking are just, wow, totally mute. What is up with that? I feel weird saying that because you definitely get a bit of spice on the back end.

And now it's gone, though the spices linger. Maybe a ton more swirl would help, but I doubt it. The few times I got enough swirl on my spoon still wasn't enough to elevate this one for me. And the marshmallow swirl? Yeah, I don't get that either (on the rare occasion it showed up).

So, yeah, boring. There are so many other brands out their that taste way more like pumpkin, so why would I bother with this one? Blue Bunny is now 0-4  in my books for 2015.

On Second Scoop: another small bowl tonight and I gotta say, I don't get why the pumpkin flavor is so weak. All too often I feel like I'm eating pumpkin spice espresso foam. It strikes me as that... not there. I lowered my expectations, I tried to be positive, but I just can't. Yes, I've called out pumpkin flavors for being bold and out of my league, but the reverse can be true too. This will find it's calling for some, every flavor does, I want to be in the middle of the action, not on the quiet side of the room. Sorry, but I won't be buying this one again.

Final Note: My wife made short work of this container, so obviously it's doing something right!

Verdict?  boring for me, but thumbs up from the Mrs.
Buy Again?  maybe for the Mrs.

Note: Manufactured near allergens

  1. Well that stinks. I prefer a strong pumpkin flavor, too, so what brands could you recommend that have a stronger pumpkin flavor?

  2. mainstream wise I would go Perry's, then Turkey Hill. Talenti is bold but top notch. Yuenglings is nice too. There's always the DQ Pumpkin Pie blizzard too. So many choices! http://www.onsecondscoop.com/search/label/pumpkin

  4. @TheIcon: good call, though too bold for my personal tastes
