Lava Cake Ice Cream from Giant / Stop & Shop

[New for 2014] While most ice cream companies tout their new flavors, grocery stores tend to just throw their stuff on the shelves and see if you notice. Case in point is five new super premium flavors from Stop & Shop (Giant) grocery store . They make for a cheap lunch at 2 for $5 (on sale, usually 2 for $6), so my only real problem was deciding between the toffee crunch flavor and this:

Lava Cake - Real Super Premium Ice Cream
Chocolate & Vanilla Super Premium Ice Cream with Chocolate Fudge Cake Swirl

It certainly looks good enough!

I'm not really a huge fan of a swirled base in a pint and that holds true with this pint. Neither side stands out, instead all I can taste on my first few bites is the fudge swirl. That's right, there's no magically gooey filled cake chunks here despite the description. The swirl is in fact small fudge swirls and large chunks of a dry cake (on the left side of the photo). The weird thing was that cake chunks on top were dry, but on occasion I swear I got a more moist chunk.

The cake chunks are the best part of this as you probably hoped. They add a pretty neat taste that's isn't awesome, but it's different. It's not some high end cake, or some super sweet cake, but it's uniqueness makes me not regret my purchase. It reminds me of those funky cocoa dusted cake ball cookie things that I obviously am incapable of describing. Ahhh, hopefully you know what I mean.

Overall it was a decent lunch, but there's nothing super about it. Maybe I got a bum pint (the texture was off), so I will try at least one more of their flavors. Speaking of that, here they are.

Banana Fudge Chunk, Cherry & Fudge Chunk, Mud Pie
and Sea Salt Caramel Toffee Crunch (review here)
(Nick is yelling at his screen right now going "Why didn't you pick Toffee first?!")

Verdict?  Not bad, not great
Buy Again?  Nah

  4. Seems like Pierre Ice Cream company may be the supplier for Stop and Shop (Foodhold), as their flavor selection matches Stop and Shop's offerings.
