[By Nick] Ahh, Tofutti. I still remember the first and only time I've ever had you. It was during my middle school years when one of my friends was going through their "being a vegan is cool" phase (fyi: it didn't last long). She offered me an "ice cream" sandwich and my naive mind thought it would be like normal ice cream. I was so very wrong. Long story short, we barely talk anymore and that sandwich went into the garbage right after my tastebuds recovered. Okay, I'm being a little over-dramatic but it definitely didn't go too well.

Oh, I'm such a sucker, but I mean well, I swear. I've spent a very large portion of the last several years constantly searching for allergy friendly foods for my son. It's an expensive past time, one that has found me wasting way too much food over the years, but it's not like I can give up.

One of leaves adventures involve Tofutti, the milk free company. First we tried Tofutti Pizza which had so-so results with my son. More recently we tried the Tofutti Cuties ice cream sandwiches and while my son wasn't a fan, I thought they weren't that bad, or to put it another way, they were decent enough to encourage me to purchase something that I've had my eye on for quite some time.

These are Tofutti Hooray Hooray Crispy Crunch Bars. They are Smooth Creamy Vanilla Dipped in rich dark chocolate with crisp rice crunches. Notice there is nothing between the words vanilla and dipped because these treats are milk free... in fact, they are sugar free too because they use Stevia.

Today, August 2nd, is National Ice Cream Sandwich day. I would have enjoyed it way more had I not slammed my head into the corner of a very large and sharp pointy object. Now don't worry, the very nice doctor says I'll live, so to celebrate the day and my non-concussed victory, I give you a different kind of sandwich.

Look, I understand that there is the strong perception that I hate non-dairy frozen products because frankly, that's how things usually turn out. However, that's just a coincidence. If something tastes decent, I'll like it.... I just have trouble finding one of these products I like.

Tofutti Premium Milk Free Frozen Dessert - Vanilla

It's been a long time since I've had the misfortune to try a non-dairy dessert, but for the good of all the people who can't have dairy, I offer up my horribly biased opinion of Tofutti.

That's right my fellow ice cream lovers, there is Tofutti in my freezer. As the name implies, there is Tofu in this treat, but don't fret just yet. The dessert is actually water, sugar, corn oil, corn syrup solids, soy protein, TOFU, cocoa butter, etc etc. So tofu is just part of the equation and not the whole thing. The good news here is there is no brown rice syrup and no tapioca syrup.

Now there are 6 flavors in all, though the Shaws I went to this morning only had the Vanilla flavor. We cracked open the container this afternoon and it looks kinda weird. It's a little disconcerting but no matter, we need to investigate.

I took a big spoon and tried a bite. Hmmm. I took a second bite. Hmmmm. I dumped a few small spoonfuls into a tiny bowl and began to dig in. It's weird, very weird, but it's way better than that So Delicious junk. It has a very potent smell, but it matches the taste. The best way I can describe it is that it tastes like frozen vanilla cake batter. And it's not mild either, it's a full on, full tilt, full throttle, pedal to the metal, batter flavor that is assaulting my senses.

Hmmmm, maybe that is the Tofutti plan. You are so thrown off by the flavor that it's hard to focus on texture and creaminess. It makes sense really. At least they are trying, and that's always appreciated.

It's no ice cream, but I'm curious to see how a few bites will taste after I've had more time to reflect on what I've tried. We'll leave the final verdict to the second scoop.
