Gifford's Cereal & Cream Ice Cream

[New for 2026] This is meant to be grapenut ice cream?? I bought it because I thought it was cereal inspired, but this could be better actually because I am a big fan of grapenut ice cream. If you havent tried it, you are missing out.

Well, it certainly looks like grapenut ice cream
(at least a slightly freezeburned grocery store version of it)

Yup, tastes like it too, albeit a bit sweeter and less grapenutty.

Biggest nitpick: some of the grapenuts are more dense than you would find in a scoop shop version of this flavor. I can see that being a turn off for some people.

Minor nitpick: I get that grapenut probably sounds too old fashion for most, but I think "cereal & cream" is not a fair name. Too many people will be expecting something different. They'll take one bite and go "this doesnt taste like fruity pebbles!" [yes, I know that they can just read the flavor description, I'm just trying to set expectations].

While I've been nitpicking, I've also been enjoying this one more and more. It was a little freezerburned at the top (because I bought it at Hannaford months ago), but now that I've gotten past that, the flavor is more balanced and inline with what I hoped for. I still think the grapenut like bits are a little too dense sometimes, but overall, it's a nice ice cream. [It's more dense than Hudsonville and less squishy then Tillamook].

Grapenut ice cream is one of those things that you really need to try for yourself. I expect it doesnt sound good to many of you, but there's a nice sweetness and complexity to the whole thing. Not crazy complex mind you, but it's different from other ice creams. It's not a goto flavor for me, but I always enjoy it very much when I get it.

I really need to put this pint away before I finish it. Again, it's not as impressive as a scoop shop grapenut ice cream, but it's definitely good and the fact that I can get it from the grocery store is awesome. I might be keeping one of these in the chest freezer from now on. Thanks Gifford's!

History note: Trying things like Grapenut ice cream is one of the reasons that I started this blog. Check out this 18 year post about it. (That post also happens to be my very first trip to the mighty Uhlman's ice cream).

On Second Scoop: It's a few days later and this one is now gone. I was good and made it last 3 servings in all, but this one works for me, though I dont know if it will work for you. If you've never had grapenut ice cream, I bet you would be surprised by it's sweetness and pleasant flavor (something search engines describe as malty/nutty), but at the same time, in a world of mix-ins, I don't know how many would appreciate this in 2026. Is there still room for this on shelves? I hope so.

Regional Note: Apparently Grapenut ice cream is big in Jamaica too! I guess it's not just us New Englanders who enjoy it.

Verdict?  I like it!
Buy Again?  Yup! (should have bought some yesterday actually!)
