[Launched as "CHOMP by Nightingale" in 2022] It's been months since I've been to Shaw's, but I had a few moments to spare, so I ran in and stumbled on some really good ice cream sales. Instead of $6.99 for a box of four, these were $4.99 a box, and since I've been patiently waiting to try these, let's grab a box of each flavor!

Nightingale Chomp Size Ice Cream Sandwiches

Oh no, which one is which!

There we go!
Strawberry Shortcake is strawberry ice cream between golden-crusted brownie sugar cookies. We had the big version of these in November (review here), though it was freezer burned.... ok, this mini version actually has a somewhat similar consistency. Maybe it's the way they make their strawberry ice cream, or maybe this box is freezer burned too. I'm not sure.
Cookie Monster is cookie-crumb infused vanilla ice cream between chocolate chip cookies. My wife enjoyed this one in November, and now I see why. It's just a solid combo and definitely grabs your attention more than the strawberry.
The Classic is vanilla bean ice cream between chocolate brownie cookies. Ruh roh, the iciness is back again. Not as bad as the strawberry, but it's here. Maybe I need to let them temper more?
Chocolate Blackout is chocolate ganache swirl ice cream layered with chocolate cake pieces between chocolate brownie cookie aka ALL THE CHOCOLATE. I let this one temper to make sure the ice cream wasn't icy, but that made the brownie cookies extremely soft. Either I cant hit a happy medium or Shaw's freezer burned all of these sandwiches (except for cookie monster).
Well, that was a bit underwhelming honestly, but part of that could be Shaw's fault. These sandwiches seem like a solid idea, and the cookie monster one demonstrates that. It's good ice cream between good cookies, but I'm not sure these have clicked with me yet.
Flavor Note: the website also lists Key Lime Pie, Mocha Brownie, Banana Pudding and Birthday Cake as available flavors.
On Second Scoop: I think the freezer burn is really affecting my ability to enjoy these. The cookie monster has the best ice cream texture and that's the one I enjoy the most. I'd probably rank the classic version second. Third is strawberry. Last is the blackout, but I think it's had the hardest life. The brownie cookies just get too gooey for my liking. I'm not saying it's bad-bad, I just find the gooey cookies super distracting and too far from what my brain expects when grabbing an ice cream sandwich. Maybe I'll grab the other flavors from Whole Foods in hopes of them being fresher. If you've had these, please let us know how it went.
Verdict? not what I expected
Buy Again? I might keep a box of cookie monster in the basement freezer.

allergy note: may contain traces of sesame
I can’t decide if I like these or not either. The components on their own are very nice, but the ratios are off for me. It’s so much cookie.
ReplyDeleteCoolhaus sandwiches are still my favorite. But I haven’t seen them in years. I assume they’re all discontinued. Same with their pints.
pints are long gone, their treats were still at whole foods, but I think those are disappearing too :(
DeleteThese are some of my favorites. Ive never had the strawberry, but the Key lime is my favorite, followed by a tie between the banana pudding and the coffee one. Maybe the coffee is available only in full size because I dont see it listed above. Also i think you dont like coffee so it wouldn’t matter. I hope one day you try the key lime. It’s fantastic!
ReplyDeletekey lime pie is definitely on the to-try list!
