Magnum Double Sea Salt Caramel Tub

[New for 2019] Surprise Surprise Surprise, there are four more new Magnum tubs though technically I've only seen 3 so far. They all carry the DOUBLE tag. Double Cherry Truffle, Double Chocolate & Ganache, Double Cookie Crumble, and...

Ooooo, so that's how they do it. The caramel looks fun, though the ice cream does look kind of non-ice creamy (I've mentioned before that I'm not a fan of the ice cream texture found in these "tubs")

Yes, I cut up my ice cream for instagram, I couldn't resist. I knew it wouldnt' be as pretty as a Trio flavor, but I was curious none the less.

I dig in and I am not impressed. There is something off about the flavor profile here. I think it's the sea salt caramel. I have fond memories of the double caramel bars but at set my expectations too high when I thought they might recreate that magic in pint form.

I continued on to eat about a 30% of the tub but I was tempted to stop. I really don't like what's going on with the flavor. I checked the ingredients to see if something odd got in the list like coconut oil... ok, technically there is a little coconut oil here but I don't know if it can take all the blame.

Hopefully the second scooping will go better, but at the moment, my advice is to try one of the other new double tubs first.

On Second Scoop: Yeah, the base ice cream kind of ruins this one pretty good for me. It's got this weird (wheat-y?) flavoring and I don't even want to finish this one right now. Heck, I barely wanted to second scoop it. What a shame.

Verdict?  should have been better
Buy Again?  nope, will save money for other double tubs

  1. I have also noticed an off-taste in some of the sea salt caramel ice creams I have eaten lately. Wal-mart sells a baseline Great Value flavor that uses sea salt caramel and chocolate. It just seems off to me. I don't know how else to describe it. I am left with a slightly bitter aftertaste that is not so pleasant.

  2. That's a bummer, was looking forward to trying this one... How salty was the ice cream itself?

  3. You should try the double chocolate and ganache Magnum tub. Same great chocolate shell but with a chocolate base that is much more dense than the vanilla-based flavors. This chocolate ice cream has none of the fluffy/whipped quality of the vanillas.

  4. To be honest, I would be surprised if it was drastically different, but due to the nature of chocolate ingredients, I think I can see it being different enough to notice (in particular, I am thinking of chocolate sorbets that have no dairy in them).

The sad thing here is that I have had a pint of the chocolate in my freezer forever, so long so that I think it's past its best buy date. Whoops!

  5. Try it anyway! We need to get our excitement wherever we can these days :)! (And thanks for all you do for the ice cream-loving community!)

  6. Sooo I tried this Magnum double sea salt caramel as well as the white chocolate where you crack the sides of the pints...Im convinced because of the off taste and texture...this is not a great ice cream invention. Wish it were better in taste flavor and originality.
