Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bars

[New for 2019] There's finally a whole lot of new things hitting my local shops and I have no idea where to start, but I decided to let nostalgia win on this one.

Mickey Ice Cream Bars
light ice cream coated in chocolate

Boring white wrapper...

Ok, that's surprisingly small. I guess I shouldn't have expected much from a 3 oz bar, but it's actually slightly smaller than the picture on the box. The problem is I still think back to eating Mickey's Parade ice cream bars as a kid and just expected a bit more wow factor...

Still, I need to know how it tastes.... oh, my, what is that oddness? Almost like a hint of cake batter tingle to the flavor, and the chocolate, why is it kind of rubbery? This feels like a budget treat. Yes, technically the light ice cream inside is a bit more dense than frozen dairy dessert, but the oddness plus the rubbery-ness is kind of annoying....

And yet I still ate the entire thing. I was disappointed, but also hungry. It happens. I shouldn't have expected much from the Nestle corporation. Hopefully the second tasting will be better.

On Second Scoop: Yeah, these aren't a hard pass, so you won't throw them out, but I'm curious as to who has had these and who is going to buy them again? I know I won't. The coating is too disappointing to buy a second box of these.

Verdict?  rubbery
Buy Again?  nope

  1. I saw them at Shoprite, and was tempted, but didn't get them. After reading your eeviee I think I'll pass.

  2. I have found a lot of treats I enjoyed as a kid have lost that "wow" factor they once had. I wonder if my tastes have grown up? Or if products I used to like have now gone downhill in quality? Or the new "treats" are just so much superior to the stuff I loved as a kid? Likely, a bit of all. Maybe I need to try choco taco again just for kicks!

  3. "Rubbery-ness," "Oddness," and "budget treat" all caught my attention, so I looked up who made this cheap product: Nestle, who owns more brands than should be legal. Here are some of their frozen dessert brands: Chipwich, Dreyer's (known as Edy's in the midwest and eastern U.S.), Drumstick, Eskimo, Haagen-Dazs, Push-Up, Skinny Cow, and of course Nestle Ice Cream. That is quite a range in quality and price. I guess they wanted a bit of the Disney biz too. Side note: you should see all the water brands they own. It is crazy: from Egypt to Vietnam, to Cuba--it's all just water from a damn tap.

  4. @Anne: all the mid range treats we loved as kids now have the quality of low end products, so we have to reach for the higher end stuff to get back to that better quality. Think of something like an 80s Dove bar, that was amazing back in the day, today, not so impressive.

@Amanda: Correct, Nestle owns many things, kind of like how Unilever owns companies like Ben & Jerry's, Breyers, and Klondike. Disney & Nestle have also teamed up for some Toy Story 4 light ice creams that are being pumped out from the plants that also makes edys/dreyers ice cream.

  5. @Dubba @Amanda

All the food at Disneyland is Nestle.

  6. I bought these Mickey Mouse ice cream bars recently and was disappointed too. The ice cream is light so it has none of the creamy richness like the bars at Disneyworld. The chocolate tastes off to me but my teen liked them.
