Ben & Jerry's Sweet Like Sugar Cookie Dough Core

[New for 2019, Disc] Time to try the second of 3 new Ben & Jerry's cookie dough cores. No Bake was a bit grittier and less sweet than I expected, but here's hoping this one is a bit more fun.

Ben & Jerry's Sweet Like Sugar Cookie Dough Core Ice Cream
sweet cream ice cream with a hint of almond flavor & shortbread cookies
& cherry ice cream with cherries & a sugar cookie dough core

Yet again it's pretty hard to tell the two sides apart when you open the pint.

Geez, you can tell even less now, but you can see the core, the big cookies, and a cherry. How does it taste? Well, that "hint of almond flavor" is basically another way to say amaretto flavor like you might find in other cherry flavors, so it's effectively a bit of a cherry cookie flavor, though I feel like that might be overselling it a bit.

Let's step back so I can mention the core. It's less gritty than the no bake core which is a huge positive. It also has more flavor than the other core, but it's by no means overly flavorful or sweet. Granted, technically sugar cookie dough can be somewhat flat, but the kid in me will always want a big sugar blast in every bite.

Basically I am enjoying this one, but I don't love it. It's different but not amazing. Well done but not mind blowing. You get what I'm driving at here?

On Second Scoop: I've scooped this three times in all now (saving a bit for Monday) and I do like it, I just don't love it. I wanted it to be more fun. It's got that cherry bite without the sweet cherry taste. Yeah it has a cookie dough cough but it didn't quite make it to the bottom (can't tell if it skipped a beat maybe so the core is in two pieces?). It's a fine flavor, it's well done, it's fairly balanced, it's just not the sugary fun factor I expected.

Verdict?  a little too serious

  1. Shortbread seemed like a bit of an odd choice at least if the idea was "sweet like sugar", as I generally think of shortbread as a rather mild flavor (at least the Girl Scout Cookies are). Maybe the thinking was that the shortbread and the almond would make the sugar cookie/cherry stand out more by comparison, but disappointed to hear that it doesn't seem like it worked as well as hoped. Still will give this one a try when my store gets it but with tempered expectations.

  2. There ya go! Try it but don't expect a miracle. The name definitely implies something sweeter (though my sweet tolerance is fairly high)

  3. They need a baked snickerdoodle core to amp up flavor in this one a bit more. Maybe turn it into a sundae? With a sugar rush from caramel, it might help!

  4. I like the sugar cookie core but it's so overpowering I barely taste the shortbread cookies. The sweet cream and cherry flavors are a good combination though and I really like this flavor overall.
