Feel the (freezer) burn

I'm sorry but tonight's review has been cancelled due to incompetence. Ok, that sounds mean but I'm just frustrated that I finally spent $7 on a container of Alden's organic ice cream to review only to bring home the most freezer burned product I have ever had the misfortune of tasting. It's just foul. I have no idea how many temp cycles something would have to go through to get this bad. If you dig to the heart of the 1.5qt container, it's slightly better, but still basically inedible. I never return ice cream but for $7 I think I might have too.

Now I still love market basket and all, but the abuse their ice cream suffers and their overall lack of selection has driven me back into the arms of price chopper for a fair amount of my shopping. For the most part, Market Basket only carries less dense mainstream ice cream and it's just no match for people constantly opening and closing the freezers. Oh, speaking of that, can I rant?

For the love of all that is special and fresh, can we all agree to pick our flavor with the ice cream door closed? I can't tell you how often I see someone with the door jacked open as they pick up each and every flavor. Ahhhh, it drives me nuts. If you need to read labels (which I do too), you pull out the product, close the door, read, then put it back. Or, if there is three or four pints or quarts of the same thing next to each other, just flip one of them around, close the door, and read it through the door.  Ok, somewhere a grocery store employee is cursing me going "oh, you're the jerk who leaves all the boxes backward on the shelf!". Hey, I flip them back for the most part.

Anyway, I shall return soon enough. We've already got word of Ben & Jerry's "Truffle Kerfuffle" and "Urban Bourbon" thanks to Candy Hunting, as well as Hostess Snoball frozen dairy dessert bars. Also, Jeffrey our Canadian buddy happened to go to DQ today and noticed that they've added two new royal brownie blizzards to the menu (and ditched the rocky road one). He tried the one with Reese's and was disappointed unfortunately.

Actually, I have one more to share. Popsicle has made Star Wars popsicles! Despite Rogue One being in theatres, the box rocks an episode 7 design. They've used their sour patch kids tech to make these ones look like light sabers.

If you see something new, let me know. If you want to vent about freezer burn or your fellow shoppers, go for it. And lastly, if you've had Alden's before, share your thoughts with us!

  1. In my experience, Alden's is rich and a bit like custard without being too eggy. A good vanilla that tastes of vanilla without being overly sweet or artificial, too.

  3. Alden's salted caramel is really good - I think it tastes like butterscotch. They did have a birthday cake flavor that was good, as well, but I haven't seen it in a long time.

I like salted caramel and birthday cake, but they are usually not my top choices - Alden's does them well.

  4. I wished that Popsicles would bring back the mint blast from fantastic four tie-in. It was a white pop that had a powerful mint and was very refreshing

  5. I kept your advice in mind today while ice cream browsing. Stand near door as close as needed to read. Open only to commit to grab said ice cream, put in cart.

One at a time and lead by example, lol.

  6. There are some stores where I just don't buy ice cream any longer due to the freezer burn. I've noticed certain places put out huge pallets of ice cream and there's no way the employee can get it all put away before it melts. More melting and refreezing going on than we think.

  8. I've had the same experience at my local ShopRite. They have the best sales on B&J & H-D but the past year they've all had some extent of freezer burn. It ruins the doughy mix-ins and often the taste of the ice cream. If I'm going to plow thru 1000+ cals I'm going to suck it up and pay an extra dollar or so elsewhere and get a pristine pint.
