Hood Jelly Donut Ice Cream

[New for 2015] Donut flavored ice creams.... they're always so alluring. Granted I'm a huge fan of breakfast sundaes so I'm a little bias, but there's just such a fun factor the second you hear "donut" in the name. There's no way I'm walking past a flavor like this.

Hood New England Creamery Jelly Donut Ice Cream
vanilla flavored ice cream swirled with raspberry sauce, donuts pieces, and sprinkles

Quick opening shot and then....

Let's jump to the important part! The donut bits are going to be the big draw here... but unfortunately they are kind of terrible. Sorry, I don't mean to be rough, but they are dense and unpleasant. It's not like a light fluffy donut, it's like a heavy cake donut, and it just gets weird in this medium. Granted, I dont really like plain cake donuts in general. Sure I like powdered donuts, those are fun, but straight, brown, sugarless cake donuts are not my thing and that's what these are. Their flavor lingers and it just ruins it for me. If I had to describe thier flavor, I'd say it's something akin to a pencil eraser. Yeah, that's what these taste like to me. Sorry. They're just not right and my daughter wasn't a fan of them either.

Other thoughts? Well, ummmm, I've never seen sprinkles on a jelly donut, but that's just nit picking. I can't say much about the vanilla base since you can't really taste it over the jelly. Speaking of jelly, it's not bad, it is somewhat reminiscent of what you find in a jelly donut. Hehehe, just realized I should have made this a friday night fight with a real jelly donut. Ahhhhhh, I amuse easily.

That's it for the first scooping. We'll be back tomorrow with some more thoughts, but as it stands, save your money.

On Second Scoop: Sorry everyone, a commenter just made me realize I forgot to update this post (I talked about it on the nosh show but didn't write it down here). Basically I need to stress how much my daughter hates this one, it's kind of amusing actually. Not only does she not want it, she doesn't want anyone to eat it near her. She says the smells is gross.... and this coming from a girl who loves cotton candy ice cream. This one is just sitting in the back of the freezer because nobody wants it. Poor lonely ice cream.

Note: Green's Ice Cream and Hagan Ice Cream, both of Pennsylvania, also sell a very similar flavor but I can't prove it's identical. It's weird because they use the same picture of the ice cream on their cover that Hood does.

Verdict?  Let down
Buy Again?  nope

  1. Those donut mix-ins don't look any look different than the other cake pieces other companies use. How disappointing! By the way, I agree with you in that powdered sugar donuts are delicious and fun.

  2. Your reviews have been so negative lately! :( I hope you find one you like sometime...

  3. @Stride: It's hard to tell if they are 'donut" or just imbued with donut type flavor, either way they went overboard and ruined them.

@Anon: sorry, not my intent, just a bit of a dry spell of awesome products as 2015 starts to ramp up. I actually have two postive reviews in the queue, one is good, one is perfect.

  4. The opening shot reminded me so much of the birthday cake flavors. Sometimes Dubba fresh is best and I think of your and Nick's donut sundaes. Like you, I am always hopeful for a new flavor.

  5. Hope your reviews in queue include the new Haagen Dazs flavors. I've had a couple of them...eager to read your opinions, mine are quite favorable!

  6. I've never seen Hood brand ice cream. Is this a regional brand?

  7. Yup, northeast company out of Mass, not sure how far south they go. We didn't use to cover them much but they have a lot of fun with their "new england creamery" line.

  8. Did your kids like by any chance Dubba? It sort of looks like something that might appeal to little ones.

  9. She tried it once but refuses to go anywhere near it now. I tried to get her to go for a second scoop and she says the berry smell makes her gag

  10. I bought the Jelly Donut Ice cream tonight on a whim and, to be honest, I thought this would be a really great tasting ice cream.
BUT....The minute I bit into a donut piece I was incredibly disappointed! Like a previous poster stated, "The flavor of the donut piece lingered" I mean it really tasted horrible to the point that I almost THREW UP! I am not going to buy this product again! Thankfully I saved my receipt and I WILL be returning this tomorrow and exchanging this for another flavor. Hood makes GREAT ice cream, but THIS particular flavor is far from great.

  11. LMFAO@someone finding their reciept and returning Ice Cream, because they didn't like the flavor that they wanted to try.....

That being said, I too was one that bought the Hood Jelly Donut Ice Cream..... and had not opened it until I saw all your comments on here today..... Well..... I just took a spoon full.... and I did not die... the smell did not make me gag.... and the "Cake" pieces were ok also! NO... I do not work for HOOD..... and YES, I am a Jelly Donut fan.....

I agree that Spinkles made no sence on a Jelly Donut...... and this product does not make my mouth drool for a good Jelly Donut, but it's NOT as bad as this reviewer says......

and that's the bottom like, cause Stone Cold EZ said so!

    Take it,
    EZ

  12. @EZ: technically I never said it was horrible, I merely mentioned my daughter doesn't want to get within ten feet of it. She's pretty experienced in the matters of ice cream and tends to like most things, so I get a kick out of it when she despises something. it's actually pretty rare. What we try to do is help people save money on flavors that "arent that bad".

  13. One of the worst ice creams I've ever had. I detected an overwhelming chemical taste throughout - it almost reminded me of a kitchen cleaner I have under my sink. Even went as far as sending comments about it to Hood. Let this one die off, fire the person who came up with it, and bring back Boston Creme Pie or Whoopie Pie!

  14. i absolutely love the tatse of this ice cream.to each their own.the first thing i do is pick out all the dohnut bites to eat.lol

  15. Well, if you just eat around the doughnut bits it's fone, haha. Like the above anon poster I'm someone who usually picks out the yummy things in ice cream to eat first, haha, drives ppl in my house crazy. And I LOVE ice cream flavora that I chocked full of "mix ins"...but man, those doughnut bits are rank. I'm eating a bowl now (I feel obligated as my mother purchased I with me in mind XD) and I spit out the doughnut bits when I come across them ><. I can't even describe the taste... they're just...bad. Like someone else said, kind of a chemical taste and the texture is like raw dough...and not good raw dough like cookie dough. And the taste just lingers on your tongue once the taste of vanilla and "jelly" passes.

I'll just keep being classy and spitting out the doughnut bits until I get through the carton XD.

Oh and for the record, I'm eating Green's, not Hood's, but from your pics it seems basically identical

  16. Luckily I bought this one for $2.50 (usually around $4.00) since it's seriously one of the worst ice creams I've had the misfortune of buying. The brand I bought was Green's.

The ice cream as a whole was very unforgettable & the donut pieces had practically no flavor.

The next time I want to buy a donut ice cream I am getting Sam's Choice Coffee & Donuts.
