Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches

[By Nick, New for 2014] Last year, Blue Bunny sent me a couple packages of their reformulated ice cream sandwiches, one of which was their Simply Vanilla variety. Well this year they’ve received a no sugar added sibling in the form of their Sweet Freedom Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches.

It was fitting that Blue Bunny sent me these to review because science and stuff. Let’s do a quick comparison of nutritional info. The Simply Sandwiches have 160 calories, 5 grams of fat and 15 grams of sugar. On the other hand, these Sweet Freedom Sandwiches have 130 calories, 3.5 grams of fat and only 4 grams of sugar. The target market for these seems to be those who watch their sugar intake and with 11 grams less, these certainly fit that bill. Let’s just hope these sandwiches survived their trip to my house unlike the Simply ones.

Oh how I love when companies put branding on their wrappers. I know I say it every time but it really adds a more professional touch to the product.

Hey look, the sandwiches arrived intact this time! They shockingly look the same as their Simply counterpart. I mean, it’s an ice cream sandwich. It’s not like there’s a whole lot I can say about its appearance.

First off I’m glad to report that the wafers don’t stick to your fingers. That was one of my gripes with the Simply sandwiches and a major pet peeve of mine. As for the taste, well just like their appearance, they taste shockingly similar as well. The sandwiches are slightly sweeter which I’m guessing is from the sugar alcohols. I like it though because it works well with the bitterness from the chocolate wafers. I think I’d go for one of these over the Simply sandwiches if given the choice. The added sweetness coupled with the structural soundness of the wafers easily makes these an enjoyable treat. The fact that my hands aren’t messy is also a major plus. Good job, Blue Bunny! You’ve made an ice cream sandwich that most people can enjoy no matter their dietary restrictions. Also, they’re portion controlled so you can’t overdo it like I did with their Brownie Sundae Ice Cream.

Verdict?  A no sugar added version of a classic done right
Buy Again?  When I’m craving an ice cream sandwich

  1. Thanks for reviewing these Nick. They sound like a good option as an occasional treat for a diabetic. I just wish Blue Bunny were easier to find in my area.

I like the branding on the wrapper as well.

  2. @Anon,I know how you feel. Up until a couple of years ago, Blue Bunny was non-existent in my area. Hopefully they make their way into more stores around you!

  3. Thanks Nick!! These sound better than the old ones. It's hard to find less-sugar or sf ice cream that taste ok. I'll keep an eye out for the new ones!
