To celebrate, I made my way to the local DQ, but not before I stopped at McDonald's. That's right my friends. The "beloved" bright green McDonald's Shamrock Shake is gonna face off against the new Mint Oreo Royal Shake from Dairy Queen. May the best shake get finished!
So, did I actually finish both of these medium shakes? Of course not! One is enough, especially if we're talking about the shamrock shake. See, I can't remember if I've never had one, I've forgotten, or I just blocked it from my mind, but this thing is crazy potent. Wow, all those Scope jokes were right on. You know that intense burst of flavor you get when you first start up a piece of minty gum? Yeah, the shamrock shake tastes like that on every sip. You might be ok for the first few sips, but there is a cumulative factor to it and it will build up quickly. Am I saying don't try it? Hey, It's St. Pattrick's day and you can do what you want. If I had a burger and fries with it, hopefully that would have broken things up a bit, but I didn't. The moral of the story is that it's as strong as it is colorful. I highly doubt I will be buying another one... ever... unless I was really in the mood.
Now, the Mint Oreo blizzard is nothing new. It's been the March blizzard forever and there's no reason to change it. My daughter enjoyed trying it for the first time today, and I enjoyed it a few years back (review here). Oh, Just so you guys know, the excellent red velvet cake blizzard was still available at this DQ and hopefully is at yours as well.
The change this year is that DQ is complimenting the blizzard with the new Mint Oreo Royal Shake. I've enjoyed the regular Oreo royal shake before and I enjoyed this one as well. It's got a nice mint Oreo flavor, it's got good texture, and there's nothing really to complain about. They blend it real fine, so you get that Oreo wafer flavor without getting any pieces jammed in your straw. Yes, if I had to pick, I'd say the mint Oreo flavor is more fun in the form of a blizzard, but I'm still glad I gave this a shot.
Shamrock Shake Verdict? POTENT!
Mint Oreo Royal Shake Verdict? Respectable
Congratulations on your 1000th product review.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the milestone! I think I've been reading your blog since the inception so it's a particularly nice day for me ;) Btw I didn't get a Shamrock shake this year. Last year, it tasted so bad I don't think I can do that to myself again. I've gotten them yearly from as far back as I can remember, so I don't know if they reformulated or if my taste buds changed, but it was downright awful!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 1000th review! I enjoy the site so much.
ReplyDeletewoo hoo congrats! I love the site. and the nosh show. :)
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking it would be great to see a new shake review on your site, and here we have it
weird... I had a shamrock shake for the first time in years, and mine seemed mild.. like buttermints?
Thanks everyone!
ReplyDelete@Jamie: I do love shakes! Actually buttermints is a good way to describe it. Did you have yours with lunch or by itself? I regret not having something to distract me. Maybe one of us didnt get the right amount of flavor syrup? It wasnt terrible, I was just shocked at how strong it was, I was really surprised. I needed it dialed back.
I think they didn't put enough in mine. actually maybe if I ever had it again, I would ask for light syrup? hmm...
ReplyDeleteI was shocked it wasn't super strong (but pleased)
oh! I almost forgot to answer you!
I had it alone. not with lunch, it was a sunny day treat. :) which is rare in WA state in March.
