Edy's Slow Churned Cinnamon Bun Fun!

[New for 2014, Returned for 2015 & 2016] After I posted the grand version review a few weeks back, someone commented that the slow churn version was a bit of a let down. The comment did get my attention, and then adding in the fact that we blew through the grand version, I decided to investigate.

Edy's / Dreyer's Slow-Churned Cinnamon Bun Fun!
Vanilla light ice cream with a rich cinnamon bun swirl

Now it has the exact same description as the grand version, and it makes a similar first impression, but it's not the same. Oh, it still has it's good points, but it's not the same. Where as the grand version was this all encompassing cinnamon flavor in every bite, this is more of a vanilla ice cream with cinnamon highlights.

The flavor is just flatter here. I'ts not bad, but it's not as excellent as the grand flavor. I know, I know, this one is healthier, and I have no problem recommending this if you are trying to watch calories. It's still fun, but instead of those invasive thin swirls, you see these bigger thick swirls instead. The flavor of the slow-churned swirl and the grand swirl are very similar, maybe even identical, but their impact varies. I also suspect the lighter nature of the ice cream lacks the textural punch to make you think that you're eating cinnamon buns.

So the moral of the story is that this is still respectable if not as excellent as the higher fat grand version. I spoiled myself by eating the grand version first... though eating this one first may have made me less enthusiastic to try the grand version. Ahhh, just try them both and decide which fits better in to your routine.

Verdict?  grand is better, but this is still good
Buy Again?  sure
