New Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
A Walmart Exclusive Ice Cream

[New for 2013] Ahhhhh, there's nothing like the first mow of the season.... to remind you how old you are. Hehehehe, ok, I may be young at heart but I'm pretty sure my joints are twice as old as they should be. Ahhh, it is what it is. I think it's time to call it a night and reward myself with what I found at Walmart this morning.

This is Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. That's right, Peanut Butter Cup now has a chocolaty brother to keep him company on Walmart shelves. Is this just a gimmick? You might think that, but look closely. Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Peanut Butter Cups. This is no simple chocolate base with a pb swirl that we've seen a thousand times. This is more like Graeter's version where the peanut butter and chocolate have been fused together in the base. I'm pretty stoked!

Oh the anticipation of a new flavor!

Get me a spoon!

Great Cup Craziness! This actually happened!
This photo is not exaggerated! I can't even scoop this one!

Hello? HELLO? Are you still there?

Ok, were do we start.... dumb question. You want to know about the peanut butter cups don't you? It's ok, I feel the same way. I can't believe how many there are. They're about as wide as a quarter and tend to be pretty big as many of them are unevenly broken in half. Look at the picture above and realize that translates into one or two of these in every spoonful. It's craziness. This flavor so needs a better name to reflect that.

Now the peanut butter cups are a little more flavorful than I remember, so that's appreciated. Thing is, I was really hoping for that rich chocolate flavor that we found in Chocolate Peppermint Crunch, but it's not here. Instead we've got a more standard (mild) chocolate flavor that has been further dulled by the inclusion of peanut oil. Yeah, I said dulled. Peanut butter in ice cream has such a wide range of flavor all the way from very flat (oily) to very salty/tangy (Reese). This one falls on the flat side. What that means is that neither the chocolate nor the peanut butter fights for your attention. It's just sitting there.

Let me put it another way. My wife was digging her bowl, she gave it the thumbs up, but afterwards she mentions a bit of a strange aftertaste. Yeah, lingering peanut oil flavor in full affect... Did I mention this one has 65% of your daily saturated fat PER SERVING? Eat this one sparingly.

I'm not about to say that people won't love this one, plenty will, but for me, it's just not the flavor balance I'm looking for. I'm not just looking for good ice cream, I'm looking for great ice cream, and this one misses the mark for me. I just can't get behind the flat peanut butter oil flavor. I so wanted this one to pop more.

Oh well. Go enjoy and let us know what you think!

Verdict?  delivers tons of cups, but not the flavor I want

  1. BAH What a dramatic twist in this entry! But based on that amazing photo of the peanut butter cup avalanche, I may have to go to Walmart to see if they have it :d

  3. At first I thought it was roaches on the top of the ice cream because of the ridges

  6. Roaches love peanut butter, so I imagine they're filled with it already. They're an all-natural ingredient, so I don't see why Ben & Jerry's would have any qualms about using them instead.

  7. Anon, I'm not sure Ben & Jerry's would consider that ethical treatment of our roach friends.

  8. How disappointing! The picture made this flavor look so good. It seems to me like it would be difficult to mess up a chocolate peanut butter combo, but the lingering aftertaste of peanut oil doesn't sound appetizing at all.

  9. I literally JUST saw this at Walmart and thought about buying it...but peanut butter cups in chocolate ice cream isn't all that exciting, so thanks for the review. Although, I just can't stay away from Limited Batch flavors no matter what the flavor, so this will probably find its way into my freezer at some point.

Just got this, was pretty good, but not the amazing feeling I thought I would get. Plenty of peanut butter cups, but was also hoping they would taste more like Reese's cups, which I would be addicted to if I let myself be. Noticed the peanut oil too, but not as much as you did.

Overall, pretty good but think Peanut Butter World is better. I'm the frozen foods manager of a small grocery store chain in Pennsylvania, and strange enough we get Target's exclusive flavors Peanut Butter World, Voluntiramisu, Brownie Chew Gooder, and Berry Voluntary) even though we're not with Target.

  12. Loved the pb cups, not impressed by the base choc/pb ice cream. Target's Peanut Butter World is better.
