Homemade Brand Butter Pecan Ice Cream

[By Nick] Last but hopefully not least from Homemade Brand is their Butter Pecan ice cream. Now I’m not going to lie, this was easily the flavor I was most excited about trying when I received my free shipment.

Homemade describes this as butter roasted pecans that have been mixed into their brown sugar ice cream. I know what you’re about to say “but Nick, you always complain when companies deviate from the norm when it comes to Butter Pecan ice cream” and my friend, you would be right. However, there are exceptions to the rule and this is one of them. I mean, come on, how often do you see brown sugar ice cream? Now I still dislike it when companies call something Butter Pecan because they include those but if this one tastes half as good as I think it will, I’ll have no qualms with the folks over at Homemade Brand.

Removing the lid is pretty anticlimactic. It really just looks like your ordinary butter pecan ice cream without any hints of brown sugar at all. The taste mirrors the looks because I could barely detect the brown sugar. Thankfully, the base is nice and buttery, just how I like my butter pecan so all is not lost.

The pecans, while not super abundant, are quite substantial in size and make for a satisfying crunch. They have the right amount of butter flavor to them to compliment their natural flavor without overpowering themselves. I’m still at a lost for how this is supposed to be a brown sugar base. If I didn’t read the description I never would have guessed this was anything other than a normal butter pecan ice cream. While this is a good thing for a traditionalist like me, I can see others being let down by the lack of brown sugar flavor. Maybe I got an off pint but I’m not complaining because this is still some good butter pecan.

Verdict?  Solid Butter Pecan but where’s the brown sugar base I was promised?
Buy Again?  If the Haagen-Dazs version wasn’t available, this is an easy second choice.

  1. Do you think they just replaced the regular sugar they would use with the brown sugar? That could be why you don't taste the extra kick! Btw is there any such thing as a bad butter pecan? haha

  2. Sugar is listed third on the ingredients list so they didn't replace it with only brown sugar which shows up fifth. Also, yes there is such thing as a bad butter pecan http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2013/02/babcock-hall-butter-pecan-ice-cream.html

  3. From Ohio, here - This was my grandmother's favorite and even I didn't know this had a brown sugar base.
Even though it was from 2013, just wanted to say you didn't have a bad pint; I'd say the bs is mild.

Tehe, the bs. Totally not intentional.
