Ciao Bella Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Squares

[New for 2013] Still bitter from never having found Ciao Bella S'mores Gelato Squares, I got even more cranky when Junk Food Guy revealed yet another version that I thought I may never find....

I was hoping for something new during my trip to Roche Bros, but I had no idea I would spy the new Ciao Bella Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Squares there. My taste buds went nuts with the thought of sea salt caramel gelato with caramel and chocolate swirl and chocolate squares. Does that not sound like a thorough melding of the caramel and chocolate experience? I'm stoked, I really am.

hehehe, it's got green writing just like the key lime squares. I just assumed the green writing was based on the flavor of the treat so that I wouldn't forget which square was which, but apparently not.

I expected bigger for four ounces. Must be the dense gelato weighing things down.

Cut in two and poorly photographed, they seem quite busy on the inside.

Ok, I just ate the whole thing and I'm confused. I planned on taking notes but I was just kind of in a stunned silence as I inhaled the first sandwich. I just really expected the filling to take center stage here but it doesn't. Granted I'm starved, but it was more like a regular ice cream sandwich with a hint of something. I expected a wallop of caramel, not a whimsical dance of it. Man, I don't know what to say right now. Maybe I should eat another one...

On Second Scoop: (New Day) My first snack of the day was another one of these treats and it was something. I can't help but think that these aren't as filled as the key lime squares, so I did an experiment. Now it was a mess to do so, but I removed one of the wafers and then ate part of the exposed sandwich gelato side down. It was better this way with a stronger flavor and more creaminess. These aren't bad, please understand that, and they don't really have any competition in the caramel space, but I just can't help but think that they've mixed a dry wafer with not enough filling.

On Third Scoop: still working my way through the box. These are good, I mean that, they just aren't great, not for me anyway. It just feels like a "close but not quite" for me. Maybe some more caramel swirl we balance it out for me, I don't know. You're going to have to make up your own mind on these.

Verdict?  good (well done), but not great
Buy Again?  unlikely

  1. I love sea salt caramel, but i was very disappointed in these. Like you i couldn't taste any caramel or sea salt, just chocolate. I didn't even like that. It was a weird chocolate. I really liked the key lime flavor, so not sure where this one went awry.

  2. I tried these and am not a major fan. For the calories, I'd rather have the Talente Sea Salt Caramel Gelato. Much better caramel taste and the caramel filled chocolate chips are a tasty treat.

Bought these thinking they'd be as good. Sadly, they are not.
