Ciao Bella Key Lime Graham Gelato Squares Review

A couple months ago the fine folks at Ciao Bella sent me three coupons to try their new products. I then spent the next few months trying to find said new products to no avail... very sad, especially for my belly. Well, I decided to give in and pick up something that actually debuted last year.

These are the Key Lime Graham Gelato squares that are "temptingly tart". Tart scares me and is basically why I've avoided trying this, even though I love graham. Time to man up and give it a try.

Oh good, they remembered rule #1 : ALWAYS label the wrapper!

HEHEHE, I love this shot because it makes this treat look HUGE!!
(in reality the treat is about 2" x 2" x 1")

Ok, one more. Notice all the little bits inside the gelato

So, I already warned you that I was kind of afraid of the lime in this treat, but it's just one of those products I knew I had to try. I'll start by saying it's a very well made treat. You can tell it's top notch. I'm really surprised at how thick the graham wafers are. They taste twice as thick as they look. It's actually kind of intriguing how robust they are.

The gelato tastes like lime as expected, but it's a nice, crisp lime flavor. I can't say I'm any kind of lime convert, but it's a well done flavor. The real problem... no, scratch that, not a problem, that implies this is a bad treat. My personal hangup on this one is that I'm getting struck by graham and by lime and there's not a very large gelato/creamy vibe here. I hate complaining because I love the graham wafers, I just wish this was more of an ice cream (gelato) sandwich rather than a graham sandwich. Oh I hope that makes sense.

I had a thought last night after my second scoop. Why not slice this horizontally, plop the graham sides down on a plate, and then cover with a bunch of whip cream? It would make a neat little frozen key lime pie treat that could address the balance between graham, lime and creamy goodness. (I'll give it a shot as soon as I pick up a fresh can of all natural whip cream).

So there is my review, thanks to Ciao Bella for providing this free sample. I knew this would be well made, I just think that since I don't love lime, that I'm looking for it to be a little smoother to compensate. Ok, I'm back to searching for Ciao Bella S'mores!

Verdict?  Well done, but not for me
Buy Again?  s'mores yes, this flavor no

  1. I'm really jealous. The closest place that has these is a hour away and with my luck they'd probably melt on the drive back.

  2. I've had the same experience with ciao bella products. It's like a weird icey consistency rather than the expected creamy.

  4. @Dubba: Seriously, the S'mores version has been stocked at every grocery store near me for months. To hell with regional.

@Rodzilla: I didn't notice anything of the sort the last time I had some of their Malted Milk Ball gelato.

  5. @Nick: that's why you eat them on the way back! (bring friends)

@Rodzilla: it's not that it struck me as too icy so much as it struck me as not enough gelato

@LoC: it's different, but maybe too different?

    @Julien: consider me very jealous!

  6. @dubba I actually have considered it but not a lot of my friends are fond of lime and won't even try it. Hopefully I can find the smores version seeing as I'd have a bunch of people who'd want them

  7. These do look good, but the lime has scared me off! Thanks for reviewing them.

  8. I think this probably depends on whether or not you're into fruit-like treats such as this one. I do agree that the graham wafers might be a little too thick in relation to the ice cream ratio. Still, it tasted good to me, and if I ever saw them on sale I would probably buy them again. I'd like to see Ciao Bella come up with a variety pack with Key Lime as well as other flavors like S'mores. This way, new customers can try an array of different flavors to see which they prefer!
