So Delicious Turtle Trails Review

[By Nick] Curiosity can get the best of us sometimes. I know I've said I hate coconut before but yet here I am with a pint of coconut milk ice cream sitting in front of me. To be honest, I've always been curious about the brand but my hatred towards all things coconut stopped me from ever making a purchase. That all changed the other day when I happened to see that they were clearancing some of Turtle Mountain’s line of So Delicious pints (I believe they were making room for their new almond milk brethren).

With pretty much nothing to lose, I grab the pint that interested me the most. Turtle Trails is basically Turtle Mountain’s take on your standard turtle sundae. Described as “A gooey non-dairy caramel sauce and chocolate-coated praline pecans swimming in a sea of creamy, coconut milk based vanilla non-dairy frozen dessert.” it really does sound pretty good when I try to mentally phase out the coconut part of it.

Well at least it looks unassuming enough. It doesn't have much of an aroma so maybe this won’t be all that bad. Taking a scoop of the base and I’m actually impressed. Sure you can taste coconut but it’s not all that dominant or suntan lotion like. I actually find myself liking the hint of coconut with the vanilla base. I was also surprised that the texture was as smooth as it was. We’re definitely off to a decent start here.

Scooping up some caramel and this is where things start to go downhill a bit. I’m not sure what to even make of this stuff. It might look like caramel but it sure doesn't taste or even act like it. I can’t even compare it to anything flavor wise; it just tastes weird to me. It doesn't have any gooey-ness to it either. It very thin which is not a characteristic I want in my caramel.

Things started to perk up again when I ran into the chocolate covered praline pecans. They are easily my favorite part of this pint. These little pebble like mix-ins are pretty much perfect. They’re the perfect mix of sweet and salty. Also being a crunch fiend, they add great texture. They almost remind me of malted milk balls in a way. Now if I could find a way to buy these in bulk, I’d be a very happy man.

I’ll admit it; I was practically terrified to try this "ice cream". Anything that uses coconut isn't my first, second, third or even fourth choice. I’m glad I sucked up my bias and finally tried this brand. It’s pretty ironic how the part I thought I would like ended up being the worst component in the pint. So even despite that weird caramel, I found myself actually enjoying this one a lot. I can’t even believe I just typed those words.

Verdict?  I’m still dumbfounded that I liked this one
Buy Again?  I can’t see it for this pint but I do see myself trying some other flavors.

  1. Ahh I know how you feel Nick. I love coconut and yet these type of treats terrify me. Why spend a ton of money and be disappointed? (unless you medically can't have a regular treat). Glad you survived and it wasn't an epic disaster ;)
